Contribution of thermal-hydraulic validation tests to the standard design approval of SMART

  • Many thermal-hydraulic tests have been conducted at the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute for verification of the SMART (System-integrated Modular Advanced ReacTor) design, the standard design approval of which was issued by the Korean regulatory body. In this paper, the contributions of these tests to the standard design approval of SMART are discussed. First, an integral effect test facility named VISTA-ITL (Experimental Verification by Integral Simulation of Transients and Accidents-Integral Test Loop) has been utilized to assess the TASS/SMR-S (Transient and Set-point Simulation/Small and Medium) safety analysis code and confirm its conservatism, to support standard design approval, and to construct a database for the SMART design optimization. In addition, many separate effect tests have been performed. The reactor internal flow test has been conducted using the SCOP (SMART COre flow distribution and Pressure drop test) facility to evaluate the reactor internal flow and pressure distributions. An ECC (Emergency Core Coolant) performance test has been carried out using the SWAT (SMART ECC Water Asymmetric Two-phase choking test) facility to evaluate the safety injection performance and to validate the thermal-hydraulic model used in the safety analysis code. The Freon CHF (Critical Heat Flux) test has been performed using the FTHEL (Freon Thermal Hydraulic Experimental Loop) facility to construct a database from the $5{\times}5$ rod bundle Freon CHF tests and to evaluate the DNBR (Departure from Nucleate Boiling Ratio) model in the safety analysis and core design codes. These test results were used for standard design approval of SMART to verify its design bases, design tools, and analysis methodology.

  • The KSR-III developed by KARI is the first rocket vehicle which is adopting the liquid propellant rocket engine system in Korea and its flight test was successfully done last year. KSR-III is a sounding rocket class launch vehicle, but there is a sense to accomplish design, manufacture, performance test and finally its flight test by domestic technology. In this paper, the authors are intended to introduce the multi-purpose test facility(PTA-II Test Facility) which is constructed for the variety of tests on KSR-III feeding system(single component tests, verification tests, cold flow tests and combustion tests) and its test results.

  • This paper described operation and vibration characteristics of 'Tail-Fan' performance test system. KARI(Korea Aerospace Research Institute) developed 'Tail-Fan' system as a kind of helicopter anti-torque system(ATS) and designed ATS performance test-rig for Tail-Fan system performance test. Test-rig consists of driving parts, supporting parts and rotating parts. For Tail-Fan system performance tests, firstly, test-rig operation tests were carried out for verification of design specifications. Secondly, natural frequencies of fan blade and test-rig were measured respectively. Lastly, to find the operation rotating speed for performance tests, vibration tests using accelerometers on tail gear box(TGB) were carried out. Through the fanplot and vibration test results, Tail-Fan performance test conditions to avoid a resonance were found and performance tests were well done safely.

  • This paper contains the design specification and detail design for a towing winch system. We analyze operating condition of the system and decide the design specification for the winch system, and also perform a detail design for the subsystem such as hydraulic winch system, control equipment and power supplier at the full scale development. The performance of designed towing winch is established by load tests and sea trial tests.

  • In this paper, we will present brief design feature, implementations, and tests for verification of KOMPSAT-2 simulator, which is a subsystem of KOMPSAT-2 MCE. SIM is implemented on PC server to minimize costs and troubles on embedding onboard flight software into SIM, OOA/OOD methodology is employed to maximized S/W reusability, and XML is used for S/C characteristics, TC, TM and Simulation data instead of commercial DB. Consequently, we can reduce costs for the system, efforts embedding flight software, and maximize software reusability. SIM subsystem test was performed successfully.

  • The dynamic characteristics and mathematical models of the KEPCO's generator control systems have been derived by on-line tests. Measuring the responses for small disturbances in the inputs, the parameters of governing systems, excitation systems, and power system stabilizers have been determined. An overview of the field tests, parameter identification, and model verification is presented.

  • In this paper the efficient finite element for stress analysis of plane stress/strain problems is proposed. This element is achieved by adding the bubble-mode function to 8-node element. The stiffness matrix of the element is calculated by using modified numerical integration order to avoid spurious zero energy mode. In order to demonstrate the performance of this element numerical tests for various verification problems are carried out. The results of numerical tests show accuracy and reliability of the element presented in this paper.

  • In Korea, only butane gas could be used as fuel gas of the outdoor gas stove. However, butane is not vaporized well at low temperatures. For this reason, in the field, nozzle of the portable butane gas stove is converted illegally to use propane gas. Because vapor pressure of propane gas is higher than that of butane gas at same temperature, gas accidents such as gas leakage could be occurred. To prevent gas accidents and use portable propane gas stoves safely, international standards need to be analyzed and verification tests need to be performed with prototype stove. This study could suggest to revise standard for safety improvement with portable propane gas stoves.

  • In this paper, we have proposed a design and verification methods of electrical system and power loads for unmaned aeriel vehicles(UAVs) through electrical load analysis. In order to meet a UAV system requirement and electrical system specifications, we have designed an electrical power system for efficient power supply and distribution and have theoretically analyzed the power loads according to the power consumption and power bus design of UAV. Using electrical system rig, the designed electrical power system has been experimentally verified. Also, we have performed several flight tests to verify the UAV electrical system and power loads. It is concluded that the proposed design and verification method of electrical system for UAV system.
