VP-ellipsis, Stripping, and the Functions of the Delimiter -to in Korean

  • VP-ellipsis constructions in English can be schematized as S + [NP finite-AUX __ ] where the underlined part is understood to be a VP. Similarly, the pattern S + NP[-to] can be observed in Korean colloquial contexts. Though the English VP-ellipsis sentence pattern and the Korean pattern superficially seem to be similar, the Korean pattern exhibits peculiar properties: Syntactically, the NP of the pattern should have the delimiter -to. Semantically, it may convey ambiguous readings: VP-ellipsis-like and/or Stripping-like interpretation. To account for the pattern at issue, we propose a base-generated analysis driven by the delimiter -to within a construction grammar. We claim that the mother of the NP[-to] in this pattern is an S whose meaning is ambiguous between a VP-ellipsis-like and a Stripping-like reading. Consequently, the code of the VP-ellipsis in English is finite auxiliary verbs while that of the pattern S + NP[-to] in Korean is the delimiter -to.

A Syntactic Account of the Properties of Bare Nominals in Discourse

  • Case markers in Korean are omissible in colloquial speech. Previous discourse studies of Caseless bare NPs in Korean show that the information structure of zero Nominative not only differs from that of overt Nominative but it also differs from that of zero Accusative in many respects. This paper aims to provide a basis for these semantic/pragmatic properties of Caseless NPs through the syntactic difference between bare subjects and bare objects: namely, the former are left-dislocated NPs, whereas the latter form complex predicates with the subcategorizing verbs. Our analysis will account for the facts that (i) the distribution of bare subject NPs are more restricted than that of bare object NPs; (ii) bare subject NPs must be specific or topical; (iii) Acc-marked NPs in canonical position tend to be focalized.

Case Frames of the Old English Impersnal Cnstruction: Conceptual Semantic Analysis

  • The impersonal or psyc-predicate construction in Old English (=OE) poses a special challenge for most case theories in generative linguistics. In the OE impersonal construction, the experiencer argument is marked by dative, accusative, or nominative, whereas the theme is marked by nominative, genitive, or accusative, or by a PP. The combinations of possible cases for experiencer and theme are not random, bringing about daunting complexity for possible and impossible case frames. In this paper, I develop a conceptual semantic case theory (a la Jackendoff 1990, 1997, 2002; Yip, Maling, and Jackendoff 1987) to provide a unified account for the complicated case frames of the OE impersonal construction. In the conceptual semantic case theory, syntax and semantics have their own independent case assignment principles. For impersonal verbs in OE, I propose that UG leave an option of determining either syntactic or semantic case to lexical items. This proposal opens a new window for the OE impersonal construction, in that it naturally explains both possible and impossible case frames of the construction.

Lexical and Semantic Incongruities between the Lexicons of English and Korean

  • Pustejovsky (1995) rekindled debate on the dual problems of how to represent lexical meaning and on the information that is to be encoded in a lexicon. For natural language processing such as machine translation, these are important issues. When a lexical-conceptual mismatch occurs in translation of corresponding words from two different languages, the appropriate representation of their meanings is very important. This paper proposes a new formalism for representing lexical entries by first analysing observable mismatches in comparable pairs of nouns, verbs, and adjectives in English and Korean. Inherent mis-interpretations and mis-readings in each pair are identified. Then, concept theories such as those presented by Ganter and Wille (1996) and Priss (1998) are extended in order to reflect the cognitivist view that meaning resides in concept, and also to incorporate the propositions of the so-called ‘multiple inheritance’system. An alternative to the formalism of Pustejovsky (1995) and Pollard & Sag (1994) is then proposed. Finally, representative examples of lexical mismatches are analysed using the new model.

  • The interaction of emotion is an important factor in Human-Robot Interaction(HRI). This requires a contextual appraisal of emotion extracting the emotional information according to the events happened from past to present. In this paper an emotion appraisal system based on the cognitive context is presented. Firstly, a conventional emotion appraisal model is simplified to model a contextual emotion appraisal which defines the types of emotion appraisal, the target of the emotion induced from analyzing emotional verbs, and the transition of emotions in the context. We employ a language based cognitive system and its sentential memory and object descriptor to define the type and target of emotion and to evaluate the emotion varying with the process of time with the a priori emotional evaluation of targets. In a experimentation, we simulate the proposed emotion appraisal system with a scenario and show the feasibility of the system to HRI.

The Acquisition of Korean Grammatical Morphemes in Early Childhood (한국아동이 초기에 획득한 문법적 형태소의 종류 및 획득 시기)

  • To reveal when toddlers and children acquire the grammatical morpheme of Korean language, this study investigated the way they respond to some picture tasks. The object of this research was 174 children ranging from 18 months to 60 months, who were selected from two child-care centers located in Seoul and Gyeongi Province. Following the statistical analysis of the data, this study ascertained that 2-, and 3- year-old children acquire the most part of grammatical morphemes such as nouns, pronouns, verbs, adverbs, adjectives, and interrogation terms. The fact that the process of acquisition was significantly different among six age groups has proved the hypothesis of the gradual acquisition of grammatical morpheme.

A Design of Korean Generator for Japanese to Korean Translation System (일한 번역시스템을 위한 한국어 생성기 설계)

  • This paper proposes the Korean generator which is used in a Japanese to Korean translation system. The established Korean generator for japanese to Korean translation uses the entire sentence structure to generate Korean, or directly translates each morpheme. But in this paper, the generator generates Korean, based on a short clause. Japanese and Korean have similarities in short clauses, including the word order. But in the Korean generation, they also have many differences within short clauses. The analysed features in Japanese and Korean are in the wrong order. Therefore the Korean generator which takes it into consideration is needed. We propose a annotational algorithm for the Korean generation and apply it to the translation of postpositions, declinable words and auxiliary verbs. We also consider Korean phonological phenomenon that can't be extracted from the analyed Japanese informations. In the end, we can translate the Japanese conjugation that can't be easily dealt in the procedural method.

  • 본 논문은 한국어 보조동사의 의미를 Sowa에 의해 제안되고 국제표준이 되고있는 개념그래프를 이용하여 형식적으로 기술하는 방법을 제안한다. 이를 위해 영어의 양상과 상에 관한 개념그래프를 알아보고 한국어 보조동사를 통사/의미론적으로 고찰한다. 한국어 보조동사의 개념그래프적 기술을 위해, 각종 논문과 국어사전에서 한국어 보조동사 40개의 여러 예문들을 수집하여 완료, 진행, 봉사, 시도, 강세, 원망, 지속, 추정의 8가지 의미로 분류하고 이들을 개념그래프로 기술한다. 실험에서는 이들 8가지 의미들을 인공지능언어의 일종인 LIPS과 유사한 KIF로 작성하고 C++를 이용하여 한국어 보조동사가 포함된 문장을 입력받아 개념그래프로 변환하는 프로그램을 구현한다. 문장 내의 모든 범주들의 개념과 개념 관계가 자연어의 모든 의미관계를 표시할 수 있는 개념그래프는 한국어 보조동사의 다양한 의미를 기술하는데 적합함을 알 수 있었다.

A Study of the Semantic Function of Modality

  • The purpose of this paper is to make a sentence systemic within the category of structural grammar for the modality in which a speaker expresses his attitude. It is the priority of a language to communicate meaning. By eliminating the theoretical description of traditional grammar, this paper also aims to illustrate the concepts of nine modal verbs through a systemic network. The concept of modality includes both the epistemic and the deontic characteristics of modality. Epistemic modality is associated with either knowledge or belief on the part of a speaker who gives his own judgments about the state of affairs, events, or actions. However, deontic modality is related to either the possibility or the necessity of acts that a speaker performs to give permission or fulfill an obligation. In conclusion, all the subsystems are described within the framework of the systemic network, with the intention of including all the potential options of the semantic functions available in a situation.

Noun versus Verb Bias Revisited

  • Recently, researchers have been debating whether Korean children exhibit a verb bias or not. Since verbs are perceptually and structurally more salient in Korean language, it has been questioned whether these differences in the Korean make a difference in the pattern of noun and verb acquisition of Korean children. Although language structures may vary between Korean and English, universal cognitive constraints play an important role in early vocabulary acquisition. Several recent studies have examined the noun and verb acquisition of Korean children. However, their conclusions regarding the noun versus verb bias have still been inconclusive. In this paper, previous studies investigating Korean children's noun versus verb bias are examined. Methodological issues are mentioned and results were reinterpreted as favoring the noun bias for one-year-old Korean children.
