  • In this study, we analyzed verbal interactions among 32 students in 7th graders' science cooperative learning at the levels of turns, interaction units, and conflict behavior units, and compared their verbal interaction patterns between the heterogeneous and homogeneous groups by students' collectivism. The relationships of verbal interactions with the achievement test scores and the increase of the achievement test scores were also investigated. In the analyses of turns, the distributions of the subcategories of the statements related to the task were found to be similar in both groups, and the frequency of 'explain' was highest. The frequencies of interaction units were higher in the homogeneous groups than the heterogeneous groups, and the frequency of 'symmetric interaction' was highest. In the heterogeneous groups, the frequencies of turns and interaction units for the students of high collectivism were higher than those of low collectivism. The frequencies of conflict behavior units were generally low, but the rates were similar in both groups. In the case of the homogeneous groups, the frequencies of 'avoiding' and 'competing' for the students of low collectivism were high, and the frequency of 'cooperating' for the students of high collectivism was high. In addition, the qualitative differences between the two groups were found in the interaction units and conflict behavior units. The achievement test scores and the increase of the achievement test scores were positively related with the sum of the frequencies of the statements related to the task.

  • This paper tried to examine a relationship between demographic factors(sex, age) and online flaming, and between personality trait(verbal aggression) and flaming. Further, the current study researched the impact of message credibility on significant explaining variables which increase hostile aggressive communication. The research data were collected by a reliable online research center and analysed through SPSS 12.1 software. According to the results, age, sex, and verbal aggression trait were statistically significantly related with flaming. Especially, man, teen age, and the people having high verbal aggression had more frequent flaming behavior than women, other aged people, people with low verbal aggression trait. On the other hand, the message credibility was partially associated with personality trait. The persons who had high verbal aggression trait showed fewer flaming when they met high credible message. This fact might imply that the quality of online contents could decrease online flaming.

  • This study investigated students' verbal behaviors in paired think-aloud problem solving. High school students in chemistry classes were asked to use 4 stage problem-solving strategy through paired think-aloud problem solving, and their small-group behaviors were audio/video taped. Verbal behaviors of the solvers and listeners were classified into 8 categories. Solvers frequently exhibited the behaviors of 'require agreement', 'provide', and 'modify', and listeners frequently exhibited the behaviors of 'agree', 'ask', and 'point out'. With behaviors exhibited frequently, the verbal interaction between solvers and listeners were also investigated. In studying partial correlation between verbal behaviors and the improvement of problem-solving ability, listener's 'agree' and 'point out', and solver's 'modify' were positively related with listener's improvement. However, there was negative correlation between listener's 'point out' and solver's improvement. In a perception questionnaire, many students were found to perceive that the paired think-aloud problem solving helped them to be aware of the problem-solving processes. However, some listeners also perceived that it was difficult to know solver's problem-solving processes.

  • This study investigated the relationships between verbal behaviors and chemistry problem solving ability in cooperative learning. Based on the previous chemistry achievement. 11th-graders were assigned heterogeneously into three-membered groups. Small cooperative group problem solving processes in using 4 stage-problem solving strategy were audio/video taped. Students' chemistry problem solving ability was then measured by a problem solving strategy performance test. Their verbal behaviors were classified into giving information, receiving information, asking questions, and disagreeing. These were further coded into 16 subcategories. Providing, a subcategory of giving information, was the most frequent behavior. In studying partial correlation between verbal behaviors and problem solving ability, 7 categories were found to have significantly positive relationships. Providing showed the highest correlation with the problem solving ability as reported previously. Moreover, this study also revealed significant correlations in the categories of clarifying provided, correcting, justifying, and clarifying. In the case of low-ability students, the verbal behaviors of giving or receiving information were strongly correlated with problem solving ability. However, these verbal behaviors did not enhance the problem solving ability of high- and medium-ability students.

  • Taiwanese abounds with verbal complexes. Among them, phasal complexes, resultative complexes, and directional complexes are alike in that their second component denotes some sort of result. Moreover, they behave similarly in that they can occur in V-ho-Y, V-e/be-Y, and V-bo-V forms. Despite the similarities, they still differ from one another in several aspects, such as whether objects are allowed inside or after the verbal complex, whether infixing changes their basic meaning, etc. This paper examines their individual properties carefully and proposes that these three types of complexes are all different from one another in their formation and thus the difference in their syntactic behavior. Directional complexes are syntactic phrases, resultative complexes are compounds derived in syntax, and while some phasal complexes are also syntactically derived compounds, others are compounds formed in the lexicon. This paper aims to argue that words (or compounds in this case) can be formed in syntax as well as in the lexicon.

  • This study explored mother-infant interactions during reading of picture books with and without printed words. The interactions of 40 mother-infant dyads(??) were video-taped while mothers read the books aloud to their 1- or 2-year-old child at home. When reading the books with words, mothers used more "where" questions and gave more feedback to the non-verbal behavior of the infants. Mothers gave more labels, descriptions, predictions, and "what", "function/activity" questions when reading the wordless book. The infants used more nonverbal answers reading the book with words. The mothers of the 2-year-olds used more "what", "function/activity" questions, and gave feedback to their verbal behaviors. The 2-year-olds used more imitation, verbal answers, and comments. For the mothers of the 2-year-olds, the interaction with the wordless book led to more attention-recruiting and bridging. For the children, however, reading the wordless book led to more labels, questions, and comments.

  • Purpose: We investigated behavioral problems, attention problems, and cognitive function in children and adolescents born small for gestational age (SGA). Methods: Forty-six SGA children born at term and 46 appropriate for gestational age (AGA) children born at term were compared. Psychiatric symptoms were examined with reference to the Korean-Child Behavior Checklist, Korean-Youth Self Report, and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder Rating Scale (ADHD-RS). Cognitive function was estimated using the Wechsler Intelligence Scale. Sociodemographic data were recorded from interviews. Results: SGA children had high scores on delinquent behavior, aggressive behavior, and the externalizing scale, and they also showed a propensity for anxiety and depression. The SGA group had a higher mean ADHD-RS score than the AGA group ($10.52{\pm}8.10$ vs.$9.93{\pm}7.23$), but the difference was not significant. The SGA group had a significantly lower verbal intelligence quotient (IQ) than the AGA group, but the mean scores of both groups were within normal limits. Conclusion: This study indicates marked behavioral problems, such as delinquency, aggressiveness, and anxiety and depression, as well as low verbal IQ in the SGA group than in the AGA group. Even in cases in which these symptoms are not severe, early detection and proper treatment can help these children adapt to society.
