This study examined the cognitive and social development of children of low income, disabled mothers. Sixty-four disabled mothers and their 3- to 5-year-old normally developing children participated. Children's IQ, receptive vocabulary, and social adaptive ability were measured with Korean-Wechsler Preschool and Primary Scale of Intelligence (Park et al.,1996), Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test-Revised (Seoul Community Rehabilitation Center, 1995), and Social Maturity Test(Kim & Kim, 1995), respectively. Results showed that IQ and receptive vocabulary scores were lower than average and that verbal IQ was positively related to shared reading time and library use; verbal IQ was negatively related to duration of child-care attendance. Children's social quotient was higher than average and positively related to mother's employment status and amount of books in the home.
Objectives:This study was to compare verbal memory ability among patients with schizophrenia, bipolar manic patients and unipolar depressive patients, and to understand their charicteristics of memory process. Methods:All subjects were hospitalized patients and had been interviewed by using the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV(SCID). Schizophrenic patients(N=40), bipolar manic patients(N=17), and unipolar depressive patients(N=20) were assessed with K-AVLT for verbal memory and with K-WAIS for verbal IQ. Three groups were compared regarding total immediate recall, delayed recall, delayed recognition, learning curve, memory retention, and retrieval efficiency under controlled verbal IQ. Multiple regression analysis was performed to find which clinical factors have an influence on verbal memory ability. Results:In MANCOVA, differences of verbal memory test scores among the groups were statistically significant(F=1.800, p<.05). In post hoc analysis, Patients with schizophrenia and bipolar mania showed poorer performance in immediate recall, delayed recall, delayed recognition, retrieval efficiency than unipolar depres- sive patients. And schizophrenics performed poorly in delayed recall, delayed recognition, retrieval efficiency than nonpsychotic affective disorder group, but no difference in total immediate recall, delayed recall, delayed recognition, retrieval efficiency between the schizophrenic group and the psychotic affective group. Conclusions:These results partially confirm previous reports of verbal memory ability among major psychiatric disorders. Our results showed that psychotic symptoms were related with verbal memory, and longer duration of illness was related with poorer performance in schizophrenia and unipolar depression.
The study investigated cognitive and creative characteristics related to creative problem solving of intellectually gifted and average children. Fourth and 6th graders from elementary schools in I and B cities and gifted classes in K and I cities were administered the KEDI group IQ test and categorized into gifted(above IQ 125) and average(IQ 90-109) groups. A total of 371 children were selected through this procedure and were tested on formal operational tasks, general metacognitive knowledge, creativity characteristics scales, and creative problem solving tasks. Gifted children were superior to average children on all cognitive and creativity characteristics. For the gifted, grade and metacognition were significant predictors of creative problem solving in the verbal area, and all cognitive and creativity characteristics were significant predictors in the math area. For the average children, grade and metacognition were significant predictors of creative problem solving in the verbal area, and only grade was a significant predictor in the math area.
Characteristics of Superior Children as a Screening Test of Gifted students The purpose of this study was to investigate the usefulness of Korean version of checklist for behavioral characteristics of superior children as a screening test for gifted students. Total 397 children were tested KEDI-WISC (Korean version of Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children), and their parents or primary caretakers took the checklists for behavioral characteristics of superior children individually. Total subjects were divided into 3 groups based on their Full IQ score of KEDI-WICS. The children of IQ 130 and over was gifted group, and those of IQ 115-130 was superior group, and those of below IQ 115 was average group. The analyses of behavioral checklist scores among the groups, gender, grades differences and item analysis of behavioral checklist were done for the purpose of discrimination among 3 groups. As a result, it was found that the Korean version of checklist for behavioral characteristics of superior children was very useful as a screening test for gifted correlations between checklist scores and verbal, performance and full IQ scores were significantly high, which means that IQ and checklist scores were very related. Twenty out of 50 items were found to be discrimination items between gifted and superior group. However, there was no significant difference between grades and gender on the checklist score.

Objectives : Intellectual impairment in children with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is often associated with relatively severe cognitive dysfunction. This study was designed to investigate cognitive function using auditory and visual event-related potential P300 in children with ADHD with relatively higher and lower IQ. Methods : A total of 20 children aged 6-12 years with DSM-IV-TR diagnosis of ADHD-combined type were recruited. For 10 children with lower IQ (${\leq}$100) and 10 children with higher IQ (>100), auditory and visual P300 using oddball paradigm (target 0.2, standard 0.8, in probability) were employed. Results : No significant differences were found in P300 amplitude and latency between ADHD children with higher and lower IQ in both modalities. However, auditory P300 amplitude in the right parietal area (P8 electrode) was negatively correlated with verbal IQ in ADHD subjects (R=-.50, p<.05). Visual P300 amplitude in the left parietal area (P3 electrode) was positively correlated with performance IQ in ADHD subjects (R=.57, p<.01). Conclusion : This study suggests intellectual impairment, as evidenced by lower IQ, could not be associated with cognitive dysfunction reflected in event-related potential P300 in ADHD children. However, cognitive function reflected in intellectual subcomponents and P300 might be processed in a stimulus modality-specific and asymmetric pattern.
The Korean Wechsler Preschool and Primary Scale of Intelligence (K-WPPSI) was administered to 27 autistic children, 3 to 7 years of age. The average IQ was 51.96. There were negative correlations of verbal and performance IQs with chronological age. These children generally performed very poorly on each subtest. Paradoxically, the verbal subtest scores of these autistic children were higher than their performance scores; thus, the typical verbal inferionity of autistic children was not evident in this study. These results suggest that autistic children's K-WPPSI performance needs to be interpreted with care; additional raw score analysis was recommended. Administrative revision of the K-WPPSI will be necessary to measure detailed intellectual differences among autistic children.
The purpose of this study was to validate the newly developed K-WPPSI-IV using other current IQ tests in common use in Korea such as the K-ABC and K-CTONI-2. Fifty three 2~7 year olds were tested with both the K-WPPSI-IV and K-ABC in a counterbalanced order. Simultaneous, cognitive, information processing as well as acquisition indices of K-ABC were moderately correlated with the total IQ of K-WPPSI-IV, ranging .44~.58. The results of these tests were comparable with US data: Correlations among WPPSI-IV & DAS-II subscales were .31~.67. The correlations among K-WPPSI-IV & K-CTONI-2 subscales in sixty two children ranged from .43~.49. WMI(Working memory index) as well as PSI(Processing speed index) of K-WPPSI showed low correlations with non-verbal IQ. These results indicated that nonverbal IQ does not test processing speed which in turn is very important in WMI & PSI Indices of K-WPPSI-IV. Further studies are needed to broaden the concurrent validities using K-WISC-IV or K-BSID-2. In addition, predictive as well as discriminate validity studies need to be conducted for better understanding of K-WPPSI-IV.
Purpose: We investigated behavioral problems, attention problems, and cognitive function in children and adolescents born small for gestational age (SGA). Methods: Forty-six SGA children born at term and 46 appropriate for gestational age (AGA) children born at term were compared. Psychiatric symptoms were examined with reference to the Korean-Child Behavior Checklist, Korean-Youth Self Report, and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder Rating Scale (ADHD-RS). Cognitive function was estimated using the Wechsler Intelligence Scale. Sociodemographic data were recorded from interviews. Results: SGA children had high scores on delinquent behavior, aggressive behavior, and the externalizing scale, and they also showed a propensity for anxiety and depression. The SGA group had a higher mean ADHD-RS score than the AGA group ($10.52{\pm}8.10$ vs.$9.93{\pm}7.23$), but the difference was not significant. The SGA group had a significantly lower verbal intelligence quotient (IQ) than the AGA group, but the mean scores of both groups were within normal limits. Conclusion: This study indicates marked behavioral problems, such as delinquency, aggressiveness, and anxiety and depression, as well as low verbal IQ in the SGA group than in the AGA group. Even in cases in which these symptoms are not severe, early detection and proper treatment can help these children adapt to society.
Objectives : The purpose of this study was to test stage model in Traumatic Brain Injury(TBI) patients. According to the stage model, attention deficits which is basic stage in information processing lead to memory disturbance and subsequently affect higher-order cognitive function such as memory, decision-making, abstract thinking, and judgement related to executive function. Therefore, it was hypothesized that attention affect recall(retrieval efficacy) related to executive function mostly relative to other cognitive function, in TBI patients with low executive function. Methods : Participants were referred to a TBI clinic and then was rated on K-WAIS and Executive Intelligence Test(EXIT). Participants were divided into two groups according to Executive IQ(EIQ) score, which of high function group(N=67) was more than 80(above low average) and of low function group(N=52) was under 80 (under borderline). To test the stage model, using hierarchical regression analysis, recall(retrieval efficacy) was regressed on 3 subscales(attention, verbal, visuospatial scale) after controlling for IQ according to each group. Furthermore, the mediation effect of attention between retrieval efficacy and verbal, visuospatial score was analyzed. Results : In the low function group, only attention area predicted significantly recall(retrieval efficacy), indicating that lower attention were related to lower EIQ after controlling for IQ. In the high function group, no area predicted significantly retrieval efficacy. In the low function group, verbal and visuospatial scale did not predicted significantly retrieval efficacy, indicating that there was no evidences supporting the mediation model. Conclusion : Only attention affect retrieval efficacy in TBI patients with low executive function. But, the mediation effect of attention between retrieval efficacy and verbal and visuospatial scale was not tested in the low function group. These results implied that stage model was tested partially. In treating cognitive deficit in TBI patients, it is necessary to develop cognitive rehabilitation program based on stage model. Furthermore, it is necessary to necessary to test mediation model in the future study.
