Taylor-Couette flow may appear when the angular velocity is different between two concentric rotating cylinders. This kind of Taylor-vortex flow can be easily seen in lots of engineering problems. In general the geometries of rotating cylinders are generally complex in these cases. In this study, we investigated Taylor-Couette flow when the outer cylinder has the slit along the annulus. The radius ratio and aspect ratio of the experimental model used was 0.825 and 48, respectively. The depth of slits is 5mm and total 18 slits are azimuthally located along the inner wall of outer cylinder. We used PIV method to measure the flow and applied index matching method to resolve the complex geometry effect. The results show the model with slit has no stable wavy vortex region above Re=143.
Matching inviscid and boundary layer methods are developed for hypersonic flow with thick boundray layer. The new equations match all the boundary layer properties with a variation in the inviscid solution near the edge, except for the normal velocity. Computational comparison are performed for incompressible and compressible flows over a flat plate. Results from the present method are compared with Navier-Stokes solutions. The present results are in good agreement with Navier-Stokes solutions. They show that the new technique can provide improved heating rates and skin friction predictions for preliminary design of vehicles where shear layers and entropy layer swallowing are important.

Since the acoustic nonlinearity is sensitive to the minute variation of material properties, the nonlinear ultrasonic technique(NUT) has been considered as a promising method to evaluate the material degradation or fatigue. However, there are certain limitations to apply the conventional NUT using the bulk wave to thin plates. In case of plates, the use of Lamb wave can be considered, however, the propagation characteristics of Lamb wave are completely different with the bulk wave, and thus the separate study for the nonlinearity of Lamb wave is required. For this work, this paper analyzed first the conditions of mode pair suitable for the practical application as well as for the cumulative propagation of quadratic harmonic frequency and summarized the result in for conditions; (1) phase matching, (2) non-zero power flux, (3) group velocity matching, and (4) non-zero out-of-plane displacement. Experimental results in aluminum plates showed that the amplitude of the secondary Lamb wave and nonlinear parameter growed up with increasing propagation distance at the mode pair satisfying the above all conditions and that the ration of nonlinear parameters measured in Al6061-T6 and Al1100-H15 was closed to the ratio of the absolute nonlinear parameters.

This paper is concerned with a transfer alignment method for the SDINS under ship motions. Major error sources of transfer alignment are data transfer time-delay, lever-arm velocity and ship body flexure. Specifically, to reduce alignment errors induced by measurement time-delay effects, the error compensation method through delay state augmentation is suggested. A linearized error model for the velocity and attitude matching transfer alignment system is first derived by linearizing the nonliner measurement equation with respect to its time delay and augmenting the delay state into the conventional linear state equations. And then it is shown via observability analysis and computer simulations that the delay state can be estimated and compensated during ship motions resulting in considerably less alignment errors.
Square beam type piezoelectric vibrating gyro is developed for the measurement of angular velocity, which is compact, small in size and mass- producible. It features that three pieces of piezoelectric ceramics and bonded onto one face of equilateral square bar type gyro head. Two of them are used as sentuators which drive the gyro head and measure Coriolis force. The third piece is used for the feedback signal in order to resonate the gyro head and measure Coriolis force. The third piece is used for the feedback signal in order to resonate the gyro head with its fundamental natural frequency. Matching two fundamental natural frequencies in the gyro head with its driving frequency is found critical in the design of vibration gyro. Calibration results show that the vibrating gyro developed has the dynamic characteristics of first-order system within the frequency range of interest, which can be easily compensated by a lead compensator.

The objective of this study was to develop a system for handwriting recognition in three dimensions (3D) to authenticate users. While previous studies have used a stylus pen for two-dimensional input on a tablet, this study uses the Wii Remote controller because it can capture 3D human motion and could therefore be more effective means of recognition. The information obtained from a Wii Remote controller included x and y coordinates, acceleration (x, y, z), angular velocity (pitch, yaw, roll), twelve input buttons, and time. The proposed system calculates distances using six features extracted after preprocessing the data. In an experiment where 15 subjects wrote "AIZU" 10 times, we obtained a 94.8% identification rate using a combination of writing velocity, the peak value of pitch, and the peak value of yaw. This suggests that this system holds promise for handwriting-based authentication in the future.

In order to compute linear wave transformation over a single step bottom, both variational approximation and eigenfunction expansion method are used. Both numerical results are in good agreement for reflection and transmission coefficients, surface displacement respectively. However x velocity profiles at the boundary of step are seen to be different to each other even though x velocity matching condition is used.

We present a monolithic semi-implicit algorithm for solving fluid-structure interaction problem at small structural displacements. The algorithm uses one global mesh for the fluid-structure domain obtained by gluing the fluid and structure meshes which are matching on the interface. The continuity of velocity at the interface is automatically satisfied and the continuity of stress does not appear explicitly in the global weak form due to the action and reaction principle. At each time step, we have to solve a monolithic system of unknowns velocity and pressure defined on the global fluid-structure domain. Numerical results are presented.

An experimental and numerical study on shock attenuation in a solid by a subminiature flyer impact was conducted to determine the performance of a subminiature exploding foil initiator such as, flyer velocity and impulse loading. The obtained attenuation pattern shows the possibility to determine the critical flyer velocity for initiating the miniaturized pyrotechnic unit by figuring out shock intensity and duration according to flight characteristics.
