Various measurements were carried out to estimate the modulus of deformation in two dominant rock types in Korea: granite and gneiss. Four most commonly used methods were utilized: Goodman jack tests, PS well logging, laboratory ultrasonic tests and laboratory uniaxial loading tests. Laboratory static and dynamic Young's moduli depend on the magnitude of the applied axial stress, range of Sequency used for measurement and the loading/unloading condition. As the laboratory measurement condition approaches to that in situ, the resultant moduli also appear to be comparable to that in situ. This suggests that the simulation of in situ stress condition is important when the modulus of rock is determined in the laboratory Dynamic Young's modulus is generally higher than static Young's modulus because of (micro)crack behavior in response to the stress, different range of frequency used for measurements, and the effect of the amplitude of deformation. Understanding of the relations in moduli from different measurement methods will help estimate appropriate in situ values.
In general, well log and core data have been utilized for reservoir characterization. These well data can provide valuable information on reservoir properties with high vertical resolution at well locations. While the seismic surveys cover large areas of field but give only indirect features about reservoir properties. Therefore it is possible to estimate the reservoir properties guided by seismic data on entire area if a relationship of seismic data and well data can be defined. Seismic attributes calculated from seismic surveys contain the particular reservoir features, so that they should be extracted and used properly according to the purpose of study. The method to select the suitable seismic attributes among enormous ones is needed. The stepwise regression and fuzzy curve analysis based on fuzzy logics are used for selecting the best attributes. The relationship can be utilized to estimate reservoir properties derived from seismic attributes. This methodology is applied to a synthetic seismogram and a sonic log acquired from velocity model. Seismic attributes calculated from the seismic data are reflection strength, instantaneous phase, instantaneous frequency and pseudo sonic logging data as well as seismic trace. The fuzzy curve analysis is used for choosing the best seismic attributes compared to sonic log as well data, so that seismic trace, reflection strength, instantaneous frequency, and pseudo sonic logging data are selected. The relationship between the seismic attribute and well data is found out by the statistical regression method and estimates the reliable well data at a specific field location derived from only seismic attributes. For a future work in this study, the methodology should be checked an applicability of the real fields with more complex and various reservoir features.
This paper describes a method of detecting formation boundaries, and permeable fractures, from frequency-domain Stoneley wave logs. Field data sets were collected between the depths of 330 and 360 m in well EE-4 in the Higashi-Hachimantai geothermal field, using a monopole acoustic logging tool with a source central frequency of 15 kHz. Stoneley wave amplitude spectra were calculated by performing a fast Fourier transform on the waveforms, and the spectra were then collected into a frequency-depth distribution of Stoneley wave amplitudes. The frequency-domain Stoneley wave log shows four main characteristic peaks at frequencies 6.5, 8.8, 12, and 13.3 kHz. The magnitudes of the Stoneley wave at these four frequencies are affected by formation properties. The Stoneley wave at higher frequencies (12 and 13.3 kHz) has higher amplitudes in hard formations than in soft formations, while the wave at lower frequencies (6.5 and 8.8 kHz) has higher amplitudes in soft formations than in hard formations. The correlation of the frequency-domain Stoneley wave log with the logs of lithology, degree of welding, and P-wave velocity is excellent, with all of them showing similar discontinuities at the depths of formation boundaries. It is obvious from these facts that the frequency-domain Stoneley wave log provides useful clues for detecting formation boundaries. The frequency-domain Stoneley wave logs are also applicable to the detection of a single permeable fracture. The procedure uses the Stoneley wave spectral amplitude logs at the four frequencies, and weighting functions. The optimally weighted sum of the four Stoneley wave spectral amplitudes becomes almost constant at all depths, except at the depth of a permeable fracture. The assumptions that underlie this procedure are that the energy of the Stoneley wave is conserved in continuous media, but that attenuation of the Stoneley wave may occur at a permeable fracture. This attenuation may take place at anyone of the four characteristic Stoneley wave frequencies. We think our multispectral approach is the only reliable method for the detection of permeable fractures.
In this paper, operation mode of train was divided into powering, coasting, and braking and rail wear phenomenon has been done comparative analysis by each section. Data of train velocity is transferred to acceleration and deceleration from ATO Logging data. Amount of rail wear has been done comparative analysis by traction force of acceleration and braking force of deceleration and a plan for management of track irregularity is come up with by the result of the analysis.

The drag reduction(DR) for Betaine+Amin and Xantan Gum as kinds of surfactant and Polyacrylamide as kinds of polymer solution according to the fluid velocity, temperature and surfactant concentration were compared experimentally. For this study, two kinds of experimental apparatus for short time and long time measurement were established. Each experimental appratus was equipped with hot water storage tanks, pumps, testing pipe network, flowmeter, two pressure gauges and data logging system was built for them. Results showed that Betaine+Amin and Xanthan Gum as kinds of surfactant had appeared optimal DR around 200-500 ppm and their DR tended to be decreased when flow velocity increased but Polyacrylamide as kinds of polymer solution showed the opposite trend to be increased when flow velocity increased. The both of them showed above 40% DR in the case of better condition by the short term measurement. But Polyacrylamide as kinds of polymer solution showed more degradation than Betaine+Amin and Xanthan Gum as kinds of surfactant by the long term measurement. As a result, Betaine+Amin and Xanthan Gum as kinds of surfactant showed better materials to use to the district heating system.
Inversion of multi-mode surface-wave phase velocity for shallow engineering site investigation has received much attention in recent years. A sensitivity analysis and inversion of both synthetic and field data demonstrates the greater effectiveness of this method over employing the fundamental mode alone. Perturbation of thickness and shear-wave velocity parameters in multi-modal Rayleigh wave phase velocities revealed that the sensitivities of higher modes: (a) concentrate in different frequency bands, and (b) are greater than the fundamental mode for deeper parameters. These observations suggest that multi-mode phase velocity inversion can provide better parameter discrimination and imaging of deep structure, especially with a velocity reversal, than can inversion of fundamental mode data alone. An inversion of the theoretical phase velocities in a model with a low velocity layer at 20 m depth can only image the soft layer when the first higher mode is incorporated. This is especially important when the lowest measurable frequency is only 6 Hz. Field tests were conducted at sites surveyed by borehole and PS logging. At the first site, an array microtremor survey, often used for deep geological surveying in Japan, was used to survey the soil down to 35 m depth. At the second site, linear multichannel spreads with a sledgehammer source were recorded, for an investigation down to 12 m depth. The f-k power spectrum method was applied for dispersion analysis, and velocities up to the second higher mode were observed in each test. The multi-mode inversion results agree well with PS logs, but models estimated from the fundamental mode alone show f large underestimation of the depth to shallow soft layers below artificial fill.

For quantitative evaluation of geotechnical engineering properties such as rippability and diggability, clear interpretation on the subsurface velocity structures should be preceded by figuring out top soil, weathered and soft rock layers, shape of basement, fracture zones, geologic boundary and etc. from the seismic refraction data. It is very important to set up suitable field parameters, which are the configuration of profile and its length, spacings of geophones and sources and topographic conditions, for increasing field data quality Geophone spacing of 3 to 5m is recommended in the land slope area for house land development and 5 to 10m in the tunnel site. In refraction tomography technique, the number of source points should be more than a half of available channel number of instrument, which can make topographic effect ignorable. Compared with core logging data, it is shown that the velocity range of the soil is less than 700m/s, weathered rock 700${\~}$1,200m/s, soft rock 1,200${\~}$1,800m/s. And the upper limit of P-wave velocity for rippability is estimated 1,200 to 1,800m/s in land slope area of gneiss. In case of tunnel site, it is recommended in tunnel design and construction to consider that tunnel is in contact with soft rock layer where three lineaments intersecting each other are recognized from the results of the other survey.

This study investigates the difference of sound velocity (compressional wave velocity) between gas hydrate-bearing sediments and nongas hydrate-bearing sediments in the Ulleung Basin, East Sea. We use a dataset measured from one site in the central part of the Ulleung Basin. Sound velocity for gas hydrate-bearing sediment shows the range from 1600 m/s to 2200 m/s. However, the value for nongas hydrate-bearing sediment is mostly around 1500 m/s, being less than 1400 m/s below 140 m subbottom depth. This trend is probably due to the presence of free gas below BSR (Bottom Simulating Reflector). Gas hydrate-bearing sediments show high value (maximum 150 Ohm-m) of resistivity. The physical properties between gas hydrate-bearing sediment and nongas hydrate-bearing sediment are characterized by the different patterns due to the presence of gas hydrate in comparison with those of marine unconsolidated sediments. Therefore, in order to investigate acoustic and physical properties for gas hydrate-bearing sediments, the study for the occurrence type and the amount of gas hydrates should be conducted simultaneously.

The design theory and experimental results of a true random noise radar system are presented in this paper. Target range information can be extracted precisely by correlation processing between the delayed reference and the signal received from a target, and the velocity information by the Doppler processing with successive correlation data. A K-band noise radar system was designed using random FM noise signal, and the characteristics of the fabricated system were examined with laboratory and outdoor experiments. A C-band random FM noise signal was generated by applying a low-frequency white Gaussian noise source to VCO(Voltage Controlled Oscillator), and a K-band Tx noise signal with 100 MHz bandwidth was obtained by using a following frequency multiplier. Two modified wave-guide horn arrays were designed and fabricated, and used for the Tx and Rx antennas. The required amount of Tx/Rx isolation was attained by using a coupling cancellation circuit as well as keeping them apart with predetermined spacing. A double down-conversion scheme was used in the Rx and reference channels, respectively, for easy post processing such as correlation and Doppler processing. The implemented noise radar performance was examined with a moving bicycle and a very high-speed target with a velocity of 150 m/s. The results extracted by the Matlab simulation using the logging data were found to be in a reasonable agreement with the expected results.
