The blowoff phenomenon was experimentally investigated in a ducted combustor according to the acoustic excitation. The blowoff equivalence ratio rapidly increases at specific acoustic excitation frequencies. A resonance phenomenon occurs when the excitation frequency approaches the harmonic frequency of the combustor. The resonance increases the velocity fluctuation in the combustor and the infiltration velocity of the unburned gas in the shear layer. Consequently, the mixture velocity exceeds the burning velocity and the blowoff occurs at the higher equivalence ratio.
The umbral oscillations of velocity are commonly observed in the chromosphere of a sunspot. Their sources are considered to be either the external p-mode driving or the internal excitation by magnetoconvection. Even though the possibility of the p-mode driving has been often considered, the internal excitation has been rarely investigated. We report the observational evidence for the internal excitation obtained by analyzing velocity oscillations in the temperature minimum region of a sunspot umbra. The velocity oscillations in the temperature minimum region were determined from Fe I $5435{\AA}$ line data taken by the Fast Imaging Solar Spectrograph (FISS) of the 1.6 m Goode solar Telescope (GST) at the Big Bear Solar Observatory. As a result, we discovered 4 events of oscillations which appear to be internally excited. We analyze their characteristics and relation to photospheric features. Based on these results, we estimate the contribution of the internal excitation for umbral oscillations and discuss their importance.
This study examines the effect of acoustic excitation using forced coaxial air on the flame characteristics of turbulent hydrogen nonpremixed flames. A resonance frequency was selected to acoustically excite the coaxial air jet due to its ability to effectively amplify the acoustic amplitude and reduce flame length and NOx emissions. Acoustic excitation causes the flame length to decrease by 15 % and consequently, a 25 % reduction in EINOx is achieved, compared to a flame without acoustic excitation. Moreover, acoustic excitation induces periodical fluctuation of the coaxial air velocity, thus resulting in slight fluctuation of the fuel velocity. From phase-lock PIV and OH PLIF measurement, the local flow properties at the flame surface were investigated under acoustic forcing. During flame-vortex interaction in the near field region, the entrainment velocity and the flame surface area increased locally near the vortex. This increase in flame surface area and entrainment velocity is believed to be a crucial factor in reducing flame length and NOx emission in coaxial jet flames with acoustic excitation. Local flame extinction occurred frequently when subjected to an excessive strain rate, indicating that intense mass transfer of fuel and air occurs radially inward at the flame surface.
Fretting-wear caused by turbulence excitation for KSNP(Korea standard nuclear power plant) steam generator is investigated numerically. Secondary sides density and normal velocity are obtained by the thermal-hydraulic data of the steam generator. Because nonlinear finite element analysis is complex and time consuming, work rate is estimated by using linear analysis for simple straight 2-span tube. Wear volume and depth by using work rate calculation are estimated. Span length, secondary side fluid density and normal velocity are adopted to study the effects on the fretting-wear by turbulence excitation. When secondary sides density and normal velocity is increased, It turns out that secondary side density and normal gap velocity are very important paramater for fretting-wear phenomena of the steam generator.
Vibration isolators and anti-vibration mounts are ideal, for example, in creating floating floors for gymnasiums, or performance spaces. However, it is well-known that there are great difficulties on isolating vibration transmission in structural steel components, especially steel floors. Besides, the selection of inertia blocks, which are usually used by engineers as an effective vibration control measure, is usually based on crude methods or the experience of the engineers. Thus, no simple method or indices have been available for assessing the effect of inertia blocks on vibration isolation or stability of vibratory systems. Thus, the aims of this research are to provide further background description using a FE model and present and implement a modal approach, that was validated experimentally, the latter assisting in providing improved understanding of the vibration transmission phenomenon in steel buildings excited by a velocity-source type of excitation. A better visualization of the mean-square velocity distribution in the frequency domain is presented using the concept of modal expansion. Finally, the variation of the mean-square velocity with frequency, whilst varying mass and/or stiffness of the coupled system, is presented.
Experimental study is conducted to investigate the heat/mass transfer and flow characteristics for the flow over backward-facing step and cavities. A naphthalene sublimation method has been employed to measure the mass transfer coefficients on the duct wall and LDV system has been used to obtain mean velocity profiles and turbulence intensities. Reynolds number based on the step height and free stream velocity is 20,000 and St numbers of acoustic excitations given to separated flow are 0.2 to 0.4. The spectra of streamwise velocity fluctuation show a sharp peak forcing frequency for an acoustically excited flow. The results reveal that the vortex pairing and overall turbulence level are enhanced by the acoustic excitation and a significant decrease in the reattachment length and the increased turbulence intensity are observed with the excitation. A certain acoustic excitation increases considerably the heat/mass transfer coefficient at the reattachment point and in the recirculation region. For the cavities, heat/mass transfer is enhanced by the acoustic excitation due to the elevated turbulence intensity. For the 10H cavity, the flow pattern is significantly changed with the acoustic excitation. However, for the 5H cavity, the acoustic excitation has little effect on the flow pattern in the cavity.
Laminar lifted propane coflow-jet flames diluted with nitrogen were experimentally investigated to determine heat-loss-related self-excitation regimes in the flame stability map and elucidate the individual flame characteristics. There exists a critical lift-off height over which flame-stabilizing effect becomes minor, thereby causing a normal heat-loss-induced self-excitation with O(0.01 Hz). Air-coflowing can suppress the normal heat-loss-induced self-excitation through increase of a Peclet number; meanwhile it can enhance the normal heat-lossinduced self-excitation through reducing fuel concentration gradient and thereby decreasing the reaction rate of trailing diffusion flame. Below the critical lift-off height. the effect of flame stabilization is superior, leading to a coflow-modulated heat-loss-induced self-excitation with O(0.001 Hz). Over the critical lift-off height, the effect of reducing fuel concentration gradient is pronounced, so that the normal heat-loss-induced self-excitation is restored. A newly found prompt self-excitation, observed prior to a heat-loss-induced flame blowout, is discussed. Heat-loss-related self-excitations, obtained laminar lifted propane coflow-jet flames diluted with nitrogen, were characterized by the functional dependency of Strouhal number on related parameters. The critical lift-off height was also reasonably characterized by Peclet number and fuel mole fraction.
In order to investigate the characteristics of two-phase slug flow, an electromagnetic flowmeter with 240Hz triangular AC excitation was designed and manufactured. The signals and noise from the flowmeter were obtained, and analyzed in comparison with the observations with a high speed CCD camera. The uncertainty of the flowmeter under single-phase flow was $\pm$ 2.24% in real-time. For two-phase slug flow, electromagnetic flowmeter provided real-time simultaneous measurements of the mean film velocity around Taylor bubble and the relative location and the length of the bubble. Besides, it is an easier and cheaper method for measuring mean film velocity than others such as photochromic dye activation method or particle image velocimetry.
Using wind tunnel, experimental approaches were employed to investigate fluidelastic instability of tube bundles, subjected to uniform cross flow. There are several flow-induced vibration excitation mechanisms, such as fluidelastic instability, periodic wake shedding resonance, turbulence-induced excitation and acoustic resonance, which could cause excessive vibration in shell-and tube heat exchanges. Fluidelastic is the most important vibration excitation mechanism for heat exchanger tube bundles subjected to cross flow. The system comprised of cantilevered flexible cylinder(s) and rigid cylinders of normal square array, In order to see the characteristics of flow in tube bundles, particle image velocimetry was used. From a practical design point of view, Fluidelastic instability may be expressed simply in terms of dimensionless flow velocity and dimensionless mass-damping. The threshold flow velocity for dynamic instability of cylinder rows is evaluated and the data for design guideline is proposed for the tube bundles of normal square array.
Torque fluctuation of the engine and angular velocity variation of propeller shaft is the main excitation source for torsional vibration in the vehicle driveline. Experimental model for engine system is constructed with 4 cylinder 4 cycle diesel engine including Motor-Propeller Shaft-Axle-Wheel system. The angular velocity is measured by magnetic pickup and FV converter at the engine flywheel and propeller shaft. This paper presents the theoretical mechanism of these excitation sources and it is identified by the experimental methods.
