  • Abrams equation could be effectively applied to predict strength of cement-admixed clay and clay-water content to cement content ratio is a fundamental parameter for governing strength. This paper analyses unconfined compression strength varying with $w_c/C$ and curing time using laboratory test results. An attempt is made to identify strength of composite soil of cement and clay according to variation of Abrams coefficients and curing time. The value B, which was considered to be constant value in past researches, needs to be considered as parameter variable with curing time. From Abrams equation a correlation was formed for unconfined compression strength with mixing conditions by $w_c/C$ and curing time as dependent variable. Regression results in this paper could be used to predict strength of cement-admixed clay at various mixing conditions.

  • In this paper we propose a fast adaptive image restoration filter using DCT-based block classification for reducing block artifacts in compressed images. In order to efficiently reduce block artifacts, edge direction of each block is classified by using the DCT coefficients, and the constrained least square (CLS) on the observation that the quantization operation in a series of coding process is a nonlinear and many-to-one mapping operator. And then we propose an approximated version of constrained optimization technique as a restoration process for removing the nonlinear and space-varying degradation operator. For real-time implementation, the proposed restoration filter can be realized in the form of a truncated FIR filter, which is suitable for postprocessing reconstructed images in HDTV, DVD, or video conference systems.

  • The condition of temperature gradients in asphaltic concrete (Ascon) pavement have been analyzed based on the data collected from 5 major sites in Korea. From this. considering heat transfer by insolation flux and air temperature within pavement slab. temperature variation on the surface of pavement was computed and numerical model using the theory of thermal conductivity was applied to estimate the temperature gradients in depth. To investigate the present condition of asphalt generally used in Korea. the asphalt property tests were applicated on 5 different AP-3 (AC 85~100), and AP-5 (AC 60~70) asphalts classified by penetration index. Uniaxial compression test and indirect tensile test were also carried out for varying temperature conditions to analyze the effect of temperature on the deformation characteristics of Ascon pavement by calculating the variation of static elastic modulus and layer coefficients.

  • In this study, it was analyzed how the pore pressure behind a subsea tunnel influences on the stability of the tunnel. The tunnel is located in the soft rock layer, and a soft sandy layer and weathered soil layer are located on the top of it. Coupled numerical analyses are performed for both drained and undrained condition with varying coefficients of lateral earth pressure. In the case of undrained conditions, the stability of the tunnel was analyzed with different thicknesses of shotcrete. On the other hand, a sensitivity analysis was performed with different hydraulic conductivities and porosities of the shotcrete for the drained conditions. The stability of a subsea tunnel was evaluated in terms of safety factor suggested by You et al.(2000, 2001, 2005) based on the shear strength reduction technique. In this paper, the safety factor of a tunnel was calculated under steady state flow condition during hydro-mechanical coupled analysis. As a result, it was found that the stability of a subsea tunnel could be rather increased by allowing a proper amount of groundwater inflow into a subsea tunnel.

  • The objective of this study was to test the estimation possibility of driver's stress degrees with the HRV analysis. For this, first, HRV analysis was applied to the 5 driver's ECG signals which were acquired in 7 different stress situations. From this, the facts that HRV trend was different from that in long-distance driving and 6 parameters - meanRR, sdRR, HF, LF/HF, LFnorm, HFnorm were useful for the stress estimation in stress varying driving situation. Next, we designed 5 personalized linear regression models in which 6 HRV parameters were input and the outcomes were 7 different stress degrees. Finally, we tested each model for 5min-long 16 segments individually. Consequently, the models could not hit the stress degrees exactly in some segments but the correlation coefficients between original stress pattern and estimated stress pattern during entire driving showed reasonably high.

  • Due to shortage of land and architectural aesthetics, sometimes the buildings are constructed as unconventional in plan. The wind force acts differently according to the plan shape of the building. So, it is of utter importance to study wind force or, more specifically wind pressure on an unconventional plan shaped tall building. To address this issue, this paper demonstrates a comprehensive study on mean pressure coefficient of 'E' plan shaped tall building. This study has been carried out experimentally and numerically by wind tunnel test and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation respectively. Mean wind pressures on all the faces of the building are predicted using wind tunnel test and CFD simulation varying wind incidence angles from $0^{\circ}$ to $180^{\circ}$ at an interval of $30^{\circ}$. The accuracy of the numerically predicted results are measured by comparing results predicted by CFD with experimental results and it seems to have a good agreement with wind tunnel results. Besides wind pressures, wind flow patterns are also obtained by CFD for all the wind incidence angles. These flow patterns predict the behavior of pressure variation on the different faces of the building. For better comparison of the results, pressure contours on all the faces are also predicted by both the methods. Finally, polynomial expressions as the sine and cosine function of wind angle are proposed for obtaining mean wind pressure coefficient on all the faces using Fourier series expansion. The accuracy of the fitted expansions are measured by sum square error, $R^2$ value and root mean square error.

  • In this research a numerical simulation method is developed for moving body in free surface flows using fixed staggered rectangular grid system. The non-linear free surface near the body is defined by marker-density method. The body boundary is defined by line segment connecting the points where the body surface and grid line meet. Continuity equation and Navier-Stokes equations are used as governing equations and the equations are coupled with two-step projection method. The velocities and pressures of body boundary and free surface cells are calculated with simultaneous iterative method. To treat a body movement in a fixed grid system, the volume displaced by moving body is added to the divergence of the body boundary cell. For the verification of the present numerical method. vortex shedding period of advancing cylinder is calculated and the period is compared with existing experiment results. Moreover, added mass and damping coefficients of a vertically excited box are calculated and the computed results are compared with published experiment results. Impulsive pressure and water level variation due to sloshing phenomenon are simulated and the results are compared with published experiment results. Varying the plunger shape, the waves generated by plunging type wave maker are compared with the 2nd order Stokes wave theory The plunger shape generating the wave that shows the best agreement with the theory is represented.

  • TiO$_2$ thin films have been grown by MOCVD. Envelope methods are applied to the analysis of the transmission spectra to obtain the optical constants such as refractive indices and extinction coefficients for the TiO$_2$ thin films. The envelope methods are proved to be accurate by simulating the transmission spectra. TiO$_2$ thin films start to crystallize at 35$0^{\circ}C$ and then crystallize fully into anatase phase at foot or higher temperatures. Activation energies are obtained by plotting the deposition rate with varying the substrate temperature. It is 17.8 kcal/mol for the reaction limited regions. The refractive infer and the extinction coefficient of the TiO$_2$ thin film at λ=632.8 nm increases from 2.19 to 2.32 and decreases from 0.021 to 0.007, respectively, as the substrate temperature increases from 400 to $600^{\circ}C$.

  • Simultaneous removal efficiencies of hydrophilic and hydrophobic gaseous pollutants are experimentally determined, and the macroscopic removal mechanism of pollutants in a dry scrubber is analyzed using the extended model of three phase equilibrium distribution of pollutant at high temperatures that can describe the different morphological conditions of adsorbent and water at varying relative humidities. For the simplicity, the inside of spray dryer is divided into three regions of ; (1) absorption, (2) three-phase equilibrium, and (3) adsorption, and the removal efficiencies of each pollutants at three regions are observed at different experimental conditions to estimate the effects of important parameters of dry scrubber. The laboratory experiments simulate the three regions of spray dryer with the temperature control and thus evaporation rate of water from the slurry particle. $SO_2$ as a hydrophilic gaseous pollutant and vinyl chloride as a hydrophobic toxic gas are selected for the future field application to soid waste incineration, and the two types of slurry are made of the two sorbents ; 10 wt.% $Ca(OH)_2$, and 10 wt.% NaOH. Result of temperature effect shows the height of absorption plus three-phase region is decreased as the operation temperature is increased, which results in the lower removal efficiency of $SO_2$ but higher removal for vinyl chloride in the adsorption region of dry scrubber. The removal efficiency of $SO_2$ is higher by NaOH slurry than by $Ca(OH)_2$ slurry due to the hygroscopic nature of NaOH, while the removal of vinyl chloride is higher in $Ca(OH)_2$ case. From the analysis of redults using three-phase equilibrium distribution model, the effective two-phase partition coefficients can be obtained, and the possible extention in the application of the three-phase equilibrium model in a dry scrubber design has been demonstrated.

  • The wheel wear of a railway vehicle is mainly generated when maneuvering on a curved track. The change in the wheel profile affects the dynamic stability of the vehicle. In this analysis, the wheel wear volume was calculated while changing the velocity and radius of the curve to analyze the wear characteristics of a wheel at a curved section. The wear index was calculated from a vehicle dynamic analysis based on a multibody dynamics analysis and wear volume from a wear model by British Rail Research. The wear volume at a radius of 300 m is dominant compared with other radii. The wear volume was calculated by assigning different coefficients of friction to the tread and flange of the wheel to investigate the effect of lubrication on the wear characteristics. The effect of the improvement by lubrication is calculated by varying the radius of the track, and is assessed on an actual urban railway section.
