Mammary gland tumors are the most common neoplasms occurring in female dogs. The treatments of mammary gland tumors are surgery, chemotherapy, hormonal therapy and radiational therapy, but surgical removal remains widely accepted treatment option for mammary gland tumors. The purpose of this study is to evaluate clinical outcomes of dogs which are performed surgical excision. Medical records were reviewed for dogs(79 cases) with mammary gland tumors treated surgically at Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital in Seoul National University from 2001 to 2005. While 49 cases(62.0%) were benign, 30 cases(38.0%) were malignant tumors. The mean age of these dogs was 10.4 years old(range $1{\sim}16$ years). The maximal diameter of malignant tumors were various, whereas most of the benign tumors were smaller than 3cm(36 cases, 73.5%). In 12 cases(15.2%), regional lymph nodes were enlarged and lymph nodes of 3 cases had resected surgically. The performed techniques were total mastectomy, regional mastectomy, simple mastectomy, lumpectomy and unilateral mastectomy in order. Twenty-eight cases(35.4%) had postoperative complications consisted of recurrence of tumors, necrosis, dehiscence, delayed healing and edema of limbs. The recurrence rates of benign and malignant mammary gland tumors were 8 cases(16.3%) and 6 cases(20.0%). Metastasis rate was 7 cases(8.9%). Although postoperative complications were no remarkable difference in recurrence rates among surgical techniques in this study, other complications such as edema of limbs, necrosis, dehiscence and delayed healing were remarkable difference as surgical techniques. Therefore, this result suggest that choice of appropriate surgical techniques should be determined according to each patient's physical status and characteristics of tumors.

Purpose: The recent development of MR has made to possible radiological diagnosis in various soft tssue tumors. But multifarious components within soft tissue tumors and their periodic change have made to difficult even differentiation of malignant from benign soft tissue tumors solely on the MR. So authors retry to differentiate malignant from benign soft tissue tumors with clinical and MR finding complex. Materials and methods: We were analysed 82 pathologically confirmed soft tissue solid tumors (37 cases as malignancy including intermediate tumors and 45 cases as benign including inflammatory masses) which are correlated with clinical findings such as age, size, and location, MR findings such as tumor border, texture on T2 and contrast-T1 images, and enhancement area retrospectively. Many typical lipoma and cysts including of ganglion and abscess are rejected in the benign soft tissue tumor group because not difficult to diagnose on MR. Results: Malignant soft tissue tumors were more frequent in 21~40 and 61~80 years old of the age, above 3.0 cm of the size, trunk-pelvis-lower extremities of the location, and MR findings with irregular border and above 50% of the enhancement area than those of benign soft tissue tumors. Conclusion: The clinical finding that divided to two locations as trunk-pelvis-lower extremities and upper extremities-shoulder-spine was statistically significant to differentiate malignant from benign soft tissue solid tumors. However, the others would provide some useful informations to differentiate them never specific.
Purpose: It is known that diffusion-weighted MR imaging (DWI) is helpful in the evaluation of malignancy grading in brain tumor. This study was to evaluate the DWls with different b-values of various brain tumors in order to determine optimal b-values on 3T MR unit. Method: On a 3T MR unit, DWls with b-values of 1, 000, 3, 000 and 5, 000 s/mm2 were obtained in 20 patients of pathologically-proven brain tumors (7 metastases, 4 high grade gliomas, 2 Iymphomas, 2 low grade gliomas, 2 germinomas, and one each of germinoma, meningioma, hemangioblastoma and central neurocytoma. The overall image quality, contrast between normal brain parenchyma and tumor and signal intensities of solid and cystic components were comparatively evaluated among DWls with different b-values by visual inspection.
Various flaps are using for reconstruction of esophageal defect. The choice of reconstruction is depended to the oncologic needs of the situation. If the entire esophagus or significant part of the thoracic esophagus is involved by tumor, then total esophagectomy and gastric pull-up or colon transposition is indicated. But for most hypopharyngeal tumors, laryngopharyngeal tumors, and cervical esophageal tumors, segmental resection of these area and replacement with a jejunal fee or forearm free flap has become the standard technique. The authors have experienced a case of total pharyngo-laryngo-esophago-gastrectomy and colon transposition in a patient of esophageal cancer following partial esophagectomy and gastic pull-up due to corrosive esophageal stricture. We report this case with brief review of the literatures.
An increasing number of studies have revealed an interaction between gut microbiota and tumors. The enrichment of specific bacteria strains in the intestines has been found to modulate tumor growth and influence the mechanisms of tumor treatment. Various bacteria are involved in modulating the effects of chemotherapeutic drugs currently used to treat patients with cancer, and they affect not only gastrointestinal tract tumors but also distant organ tumors. In addition, changes in the gut microbiota are known to be involved in the antitumor immune response as well as the modulation of the intestinal immune system. As a result, the gut microbiota plays an important role in modulating the efficacy of immune checkpoint inhibitors. Therefore, gut microbiota could be considered as an adjuvant treatment option with other cancer treatment or as another marker for predicting treatment response. In this review, we examine how gut microbiota affects cancer treatments.
Inflammation is potential risk factor of various human malignancies. Inflammatory bowel syndromes such as ulcerative colitis are well known as risk factors for colon cancer. Here, we examined enhancing effects of dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-associated inflammation on X-irradiation induced colonic tumorigenesis in Min and wild-type (WT) mice. Animals were X-irradiated at 1.5 Gy at 5 weeks of age (at 0 experimental week) and 2% DSS in drinking water was administered at 5 or 11 experimental weeks. Mice were sacrificed at 16 weeks and incidence and multiplicity of colonic tumors were assessed. Incidence of colonic tumors in Min mouse was increased from 33.3% to 100% (p<0.05) with X-irradiation alone, whereas no tumors were developed in WT mice. In DSS-treated Min mice, X-irradiation increased the number of colonic tumors. Total number of colonic tumors was increased 1.57 times to $30.7{\pm}3.83$ tumors/mouse with X-irradiation+DSS at 5 weeks comapared to $19.6{\pm}2.9$ in corresponding DSS alone group (p<0.05). When the duration of inflammation was compared, longer period of DSS effect promoted more colonic tumorigenesis. Collectively, we conclude that X-irradiation and DSS-induced inflammation act synergistically for colonic tumorigenesis.

Background: Brain tumors, constituting one of the most deadly forms of cancer worldwide, result from the accumulation of multiple genetic and epigenetic alterations in genes and signaling pathways. Isocitrate dehydrogenase enzyme isoform 1 (IDH1) mutations are frequently identified in primary brain tumors and acute myeloid leukemia. Studies on IDH1 gene mutations have been extensively performed in various populations worldwide but not in Malaysia. This work was conducted to study the prevalence of IDH1 c.395G>A (R132H) hotspot mutations in a group of Malaysian patients with brain tumors in order to gain local data for the IDH1 mutation profile in our population. Methods: Mutation analysis of c.395G>A (R132H) of IDH1 was performed in 40 brain tumor specimens by the polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism method (PCR-RFLP) and then verified by direct sequencing. Associations between the IDH1 c.395G>A (R132H) mutation and clinicopathologic characteristics were also analyzed. Results: The IDH1 c.395G>A (R132H) mutation was detected in 14/40 patients (35%). A significant association was found with histological tumor types, but not with age, gender and race. Conclusions: IDH1 is frequently mutated and associated with histological subtypes in Malay brain tumors.
The CA(carbohydrate antigen)19-9 is complex protein that can be used as an important marker which aids the clinical diagnosis and prognosis of various pancreaticobiliary tumors. However, it was also reported that there were some CA19-9 positive patients with benign disease as using RIA method. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the clinical usefulness of serum level of CA19-9 with RIA(radioimmuno assay), CIA(chemiluminescence immuno assay), and conventional liver function tests. The correlation between CIA and RIA in CA19-9 of pancreatobiliary disease was 0.9833(P<0.01). Also, the correlations between CIA and RIA in CA19-9 of benign and malignant pancreaticobiliary tumor patients was 0.8714(P<0.01) and 0.9727(P<0.01) respectively. The correlation between CA19-9 and ALP was 0.5140(P<0.01) and CEA was 0.3385(P<0.05) as using CIA. The measurement of serum CA19-9 levels by CIA method may be useful in differentiating patients with malignant disease from those with benign disease in pancreaticobiliary tumors.
Treatment for the brain tumors consist of surgery, chemotherapy, and a variety of methods of irradiation. Therapy is aimed to destroy the tumor, but necrosis and edema occur concurrently. Conventional structural imaging techniques such as CT or MRI are unable to reliably distinguish persistent and recurrent tumor from necrosis or edema. T1-201 has been shown to be useful in the evaluation of the myocardial viability by comparing the early uptake and redistribution image. The aim of this study is to evaluate the clinical usefulness of the early uptake and delayed washout images of the T1-201 brain SPECT in the brain tumors. In the pathologically diagnosed various brain tumor patients, brain SPECT was done with rotating gamma camera 15 minutes and 3 hours after T1-201 injection, and the T1-201 uptake in the tumor was compared with the skull and scalp activity. In the glioblastoma multiforme, meningioma and metastatic tumor, the T1-201 uptake was higher than low grade glioma in both 15 minute and 3 hour images (p<0.02). In the low grade glioma,3 hour T1-201 uptake was significantly lower than 15 minute uptake (p<0.05) but in the glioblastoma, meningioma and metastatic tumor there was no significant difference. There was no significant difference in the T1-201 uptake among the glioblastoma, meningioma and metastatic tumors. In one matastatic tumor, T1-201 uptake was decreased after radiation therapy. T1-201 brain SPECT could distinguish the benign and malignancy, and seems to be useful in the follow-up after treatment. But one of the early or delayed SPECT seems not to be necessary for these purposes.
Purpose: To evaluate the clinical usefulness of diffusion weighted MR imaging(DWI) in the differential diagnosis of brain tumors. Materials and methods: DWI and conventional MR images of nineteen patients with brain tumors(10 metastatic tumors, 4 high grade gliomas, 4 low grade astrocytomas, one oligodendroglioma)were obtained on 1.5T unit. DWI was obtained using single shot spin echo planar imaging with b-value near 1000. We analyzed the signal intensities of lesions including solid portion, necrotic or cystic portion and peritumoral edema of brain tumors (classified five grades comparison with the signal intensities of brain parenchyma and CSF)and calculate the SIR(signal intensity ratio)of lesions to the contralateral normal brain parenchyma. We analyzed statistically the signal intensities and SIR of tumors using independence T test. Results: In solid portions of tumors, all the metastatic tumors and high grade gliomas showed high signal intensities, but low grade astrocytomas and oligodendroglioma showed iso or slight high signal intensities to the normal brain parenchyma. The SIR of solid portion has positive correlation with malignant pot ential(metastatic tumors 1.52, high grade gliomas 1.38, low grade astrocytomas 1.16, oligodendroglioma 1.31)(p < 0.05). In peritumoral edema where seen in 14 tumors, seven of 10 metastatic tumors and two of 4 high grade gliomas showed iso signal intensities, whereas edemas in other 5 brain tumors showed hyperintense to the normal brain parenchyma. The SIRs of peritumoral edemas in metastatic tumors (1.14) was lower than high grade gliomas(1.31),but statistically insignificant. The SIR of cystic or necrotic portion of brain tumors was 0.63. In non enhancing solid portions, three of six cases showed hyperintense to the adjacent peritumoral edema. Conclusion: On DWI, the signal intensities of solid portion has positive correlation with malignant potential, and perilesional edema of brain tumors appear various signal intensities owing to "T2 shine through effect" and the extensiveness of vasogenic edema. Another merit using DWI on the evaluation of brain tumors is to improved better delineation of tumor margins from the adjacent edemas, especially at the non enhancing solid portion of the tumors.
