  • Various attempts have been made to explain the: pronounced seasonal and universal time (UT) variations of geomagnetic indices. As one of such attempts, we analyze the hourly-averaged auroral electroject indices obtained during the past 20 years. The AU and AL indices maximize during summer and equinoctial months, respectively. By normalizing the contribution of the solar conductivity enhancement to the AU index, or to the eastward electrojet, it is found that the AU also follows the same semiannual variation pattern of the AL index, suggesting that the electric field is the main modulator of the semiannual magnetic variation. The fact that the variation pattern of the yearly-mean AU index follows the mirror image of the AL index provides another indication that the electric field is the main modulator of magnetic disturbance. The pronounced UT variations of the auroral electrojet indices are also noted. To determine the magnetic activity dependence, the probability of recording a given activity level of AU and AL during each UT is examined. The UT variation of the AL index, thus obtained, shows a maximum at around 1200-1800 UT and a minimum around 0000-0800 UT particularly during winter. It is closely associated with the rotation of the geomagnetic pole around the rotational axis, which results in the change of the solar-originated ionospheric conductivity distribution over the polar region. On the other hand the UT variation is prominent during disturbed periods, indicating that the latitudinal mismatch between the AE stations and the auroral electrojet belt is responsible for it. Although not as prominent as the AL index, the probability distribution of the AU also shows two UT peaks. We confirm that the Dst index shows more prominent seasonal variation than the AE indices. However, the UT variation of the Dst index is only noticeable during the main phase of a magnetic storm. It is a combined result of the uneven distribution of the Dst stations and frequent developments of the partial ring current and substorm wedge current preferentially during the main phase.

  • The surface $O_3,\;CO,\;NO_x,\;and\;SO_2$ were measured at Gosan in Jeju Island from May 2004 to April 2005. Over this period, the mean concentrations $({\pm}s.d.)$ of each gas was 40.06 $({\pm}16.01)$ ppbv for $O_3,\;264.92({\pm}115.73)ppbv\;for\;CO,\;1.98({\pm}2.73)ppbv\;for\;SO)_2,\;and\;4.64 ({\pm}3.24) ppbv\;for\;NO_x$. The monthly variations and the diurnal variations of these gases show that the Gosan site is situated in a relatively clean region. However, there were episodic simultaneous peaks in CO and $SO_2$, especially in winter and early spring. Using cluster analysis with air mass back- ward trajectory analysis, we suggest that these episodes are due to the influence of transportation of polluted air mass from polluted regions. In the cluster, which was under the dominant influence of clean maritime air mass, low levels of $O_3,\;CO,\;and\;SO_2$ were observed. The levels of these species were elevated in the other two clusters which had the air mass influenced by polluted continental regions. In addition, ratios of the chemical species such as $CO/NO_x,\;SO_2/NO_x,\;and\;CO/SO_2$ revealed the somewhat different characteristics of emission sources influencing each cluster. The differences in concentration of trace gases among clusters with different origin and transport pathways imply that Gosan is under the effect of pollution transported from other regions.

  • This study examined the effect of solar flux (F10.7) and sunspots number (R) on the daily variation of equatorial electrojet (EEJ) and morning/afternoon counter electrojet (MCEJ/ACEJ) in the ionospheric E region across the eight longitudinal sectors during quiet days from January 2008 to December 2013. In particular, we focus on both minimum and maximum solar cycle of 24. For this purpose, we have collected a 6-year ground-based magnetic data from multiple stations to investigate EEJ/CEJ climatology in the Peruvian, Brazilian, West & East African, Indian, Southeast Asian, Philippine, and Pacific sectors with the corresponding F10.7 and R data from satellites simultaneously. Our results reveal that the variations of monthly mean EEJ intensities were consistent with the variations of solar flux and sunspot number patterns of a cycle, further indicating that there is a significant seasonal and longitudinal dependence. During the high solar cycle period, F10.7 and R have shown a strong peak around equinoctial months, consequently, the strong daytime EEJs occurred in the Peruvian and Southeast Asian sectors followed by the Philippine regions throughout the years investigated. In those sectors, the correlation between the day Maxima EEJ and F10.7 strengths have a positive value during periods of high solar activity, and they have relatively higher values than the other sectors. A predominance of MCEJ occurrences is observed in the Brazilian (TTB), East African (AAE), and Peruvian (HUA) sectors. We have also observed the CEJ dependence on solar flux with an anti-correlation between ACEJ events and F10.7 are observed especially during a high solar cycle period.

  • $Ca_{10}(PO_{4})_{6}(OH)_{2}$ humidity-sensitive devices were fabricated by a solid reaction method, and their humidity-sensitive characteristics were investigated. The impedance decreases with increasing relative humidity, and the good sensitivity is shown in which impedance changes by about $10^{2}\;{\Omega}$ over the region of $30{\sim}90\;%$. Also, It is shown that the humidity sensitivity is stable in temperature variations and long time exposures to the humidity. The sensitivity of the specimens is not affected by a heat treatment, and the hysteresis in one humidity cycle is negligible.

  • This paper describes the static and dynamic characteristic analysis of the Series Resonant DC to DC Converter with frequency control. The natural commutation of all switch element is realized when the switching frequency is below the resonant frequency of the tank circuit, and the analysis is limited to only this region. For the analysis method, state plane technique is adopted, and each operation mode is defined from normalized switching frequency Fsn. Under this condition, circuit performance is analyzed ideally. The physical characteristics of the series resonant converter is easily grasped by this analysis method with frequency control and this analytical results are directly applicable to the actual converter design. The validity of the analysis is verified by comparing with experimental results and the stability of the converter is confirmed against small variations around the operating point by conventional frequency domain analysis.

  • Pb(Zr, Ti)O3-Pb(Co, Nb)O3 systems were investigated by x-ray diffraction method. System contains rhombohedral, tetragonal, and pseudocubic structures at room temperature. Crystal symmetry was changed from 4-fold symmetry to 3-fold symmetry by substituting Pb(Co1/3, Nb2/3)O3 ; PCN, to Pb(Zr0.52, Ti0.48)O3 ; PZT. As the substituted PCN concentration was increased, an increase in a-axis direction and a decrease in c-axis in the perovskite structure were occurred simultaneously, so that the crystal symmetry was changed into such way. In the higher sinteringtemperatures, the unit cell distortions occurred rather in the lower substitution range of PCN. The ferroelectric properties were maximized at the region that tetragonal and rhombohedral or pseudocubic structures were coexist.

  • Controlled reduction of silver alkylcarbamate complexes with hydrogen gas was investigated as a facile synthetic method for high concentrations of silver nanocolloids in organic solvent. Polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) was used to stabilize the silver colloids obtained from the chemical reduction. To determine optimum conditions for preparation of the stable and controlled silver colloids with the narrowest particle size and distribution, a large number of experiments were carried out involving variations in the concentrations of the silver 2-ethylhexylcarbamate (Ag-EHCB) complex, PVP, and 2-propanol. The initial colloid had a mean particle diameter between 5$\sim$50 nm, as measured by transmission electron microscopy, and exhibited a sharp absorption band in the UV region with a maximum size near 420 nm. After treatment with a reducing agent, the colloids were characterized by ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the amounts of capsaicinoid and free sugar, as well as ASTA color values in three pepper cultivars grown in different regions of Korea. Pepper cultivars from ten different regions of Korea were collected in 2011 and 2012. The capsaicinoid contents of the three cultivars, Urigun, Bugang, and Muhanjilju, varied in the range of 52.53~362, 15.35~126.40, and 3.41~50.86 mg/100 g, respectively, depending on their cultivation region. Among the three cultivars, Urigun had the highest average capsaicinoid content, followed by Bugang and Muhanjilju. The free sugar contents of Urigun, Bugang, and Muhanjilju varied in the range of 18.29~35.54, 16.91~32.83, and 18.63~33.21%, respectively, depending on the region. Average free sugar contents did not vary significantly among the cultivars grown in different regions as well as in different years. The ASTA color values of Urigun, Bugang, and Muhanjilju varied in the range of 57.17~132.61, 66.23~139.49, and 85.43~133.26, respectively. ASTA color values of the three cultivars grown in 2012 were significantly higher than those grown in 2011. Variations in the amounts of capsaicinoids, free sugar contents, and ASTA color values observed in this study can be attributed to the intrinsic genetic characteristics of each cultivar or alternatively to the environmental conditions. We assume that the quantity of capsaicinoid is affected more by the genotype than the cultivation region, whereas the reverse holds for the variations in free sugar quantity and ASTA color values.

  • In order to elucidate the spatiotemporal variations of marine environmental parameters, we collected seawater samples in the south-western region of the East Sea in May, August, and November 2012 and February 2013. The concentrations of dissolved inorganic nutrients (dissolved inorganic nitrogen, phosphorus, and silicate) in surface seawater during the summer season were lower than those during autumn and winter seasons, which the mixed layer is deeper. The low nutrient concentration in spring and summer seasons seems by consumption of dissolved inorganic nutrients by phytoplankon photosynthesis (high chlorophyll a concentration) and the limited supply of dissolved inorganic nutrients from subsurface layer having high nutrients. The low nutrient concentration during spring season seems to be related to the limited supply of dissolved inorganic nutrients from land and subsurface layer because the concentration of chlorophyll a was low. The DIN:DIP ratio was a wide range of average $15.6{\pm}13.6$ in the surface seawater compared to that of average $14.8{\pm}4.2$ in the bottom seawater during sampling periods. The dissolved inorganic nitrogen might act as a limiting factor of the growth of phytoplankton because the DIN:DIP ratio (on average $8.35{\pm}4.67$) was low during the spring season.

  • This study is to investigate how the expenditures for hypertension is affected by socioeconomic, health care resources, and health behavior factors with a special emphasis on geographic variations and to provide the data about regional management for hypertension. To analyze, we combined a unique data set including key indicators from Medical Service Usage Statistics 2012 by Region by National Health Insurance Corporation, Annual Community Health Survey 2012 by Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and other government organizations at the 247 small administrative districts. We found that the average expenditures of hypertension in 249 small districts is 62,000 won and coefficient of variation is 30.0. Major factors of differences in hypertension expenditure is population density, marital status, household income, number of hospital per 100 thousand, medical expenses outside the jurisdiction, drinking rate, moderate and over-intensity physical activity, and hypertension diagnosis rate. The results of decision tree was that there were significant differences between regions in hypertension diagnosis rate, household income, marital status, number of hospital per 100 thousand, obesity rate, drinking rate. This study concluded that determinants of geographic variations in hypertension spending are not only health resources and socioepidemic characteristics but health behaviors.
