A cylindrical pin fin with variable diameter is analyzed by using the one dimensional analytical method. Heat loss and fin efficiency are presented as a function of the fin diameter, length and convection characteristic numbers ratio. The relationship between the fin diameter and convection characteristic number over the fin for the same amount of heat loss is shown. One of the results indicates the fin efficiency increases as the fin diameter increases while that decreases as the fin length increases.

The dynamic properties near (and at) a stable steady state are discussed, when a chemical system relaxes from the unstable steady state. The time-dependent correlation length for the fluctuating variable near a stable steady state is explicitly obtained by introducing the probability average for the variable satisfying the rate equation. The study is carried out about the effect of nonlinearity on the correlation length near (and at) a stable steady state.

The aim of this paper is to show what are the sociolinguistic variables of word-initial length loss in Seoul dialect. 350 people were inquired to pronounce 40 words. Among the informants, 152 were male, and 198 were female. In terms of their age, 49 were twenties, 70 were thirties, 69 were forties, 71 were fifties, and 91 were above sixties. According to our statistics, 18 words show sociolinguistic variation by age, and sex was not a variable. So we can conclude that Seoul dialect is undergoing length loss by age at least. But we need to enlarge the number of words and informants and we also need to adopt other variables like social level, education etc for better understanding of Seoul dialect.

In a storage system, the performance of data deduplication can be increased if we consider the file modification pattern. For example, if a file is modified at the end of file region then fixed-length chunking algorithm superior to variable-length chunking. Therefore, it is important to predict in which location of a file is modified between files. In this paper, the essential idea is to exploit an efficient file pattern checking scheme that can be used for data deduplication system. The file modification pattern can be used for elaborating data deduplication system for selecting deduplication algorithm. Experiment result shows that the proposed system can predict file modification region with high probability.

In this paper, we propose the efficient digital watermarking scheme to transmit effectively the compressed medical image that embedded with watermarking data in mobile Internet access channel. The wireless channel error based on multiple access interference (MAI) is closely related to the length of spreading sequence in CDMA system. Also, the fixed length coded medical image with watermark bit stream can be classified by significance of source image. In the simulation, we compare the peak signal to noise ratio (PSNR) performance when the watermarked image with a simple symbol and when the watermarked image with a text file is transmitted using variable length of spreading sequences in case of limited length of spread sequence.

This study was conducted to examine the korean word length effects on auditory word recognition. Linguistically, word length can be defined by several sublexical units such as letters, phonemes, syllables, and so on. In order to investigate which units are used in auditory word recognition, lexical decision task was used. Experiment 1 and 2 showed that syllable length affected response time, and syllable length interacted with word frequency. As a result, in recognizing auditory word syllable length was important variable.

A numerical study, using the molecular dynamics simulation method, was carried out to investigate the wetting characteristics of water droplets on a solid square pillar surface with variable periodic edge length patterns at the nanoscale. In this study, the pillar plane was supposed to be rectangular or square shaped. In addition, the surface area was increased while the shape of the pillar plane was kept fixed. In the case of the square pillar, the edge length increased from $4.24{\AA}$ to $12.72{\AA}$. Also, the rectangular pillar had two types of length edges. In this case, one edge length was fixed at $8.48{\AA}$ and the other edge length was increased from $4.24{\AA}$ to $12.72{\AA}$. Through these length changes, the hydrophobicity and hydrophilicity of a water droplet on the variable pillar surfaces were analyzed.

Swirl injectors have the advantage of stable combustion, high efficiency, and insensibility to variable O/F ratio. Recess length is the length from outer orifice tip to inner orifice tip. It is the very important variable of performance of swirl type injector Recess length have influence on collision, mixing, spray, and combustion of propellants. This study investigated on the engine performance with the change of recess length through CFD, cold flow test, and combustion test. In result, we could confirm the change of engine performance with the change of recess length. And we found that performance forecast process through CFD, cold flow test is the right process through combustion test.

Most of media compression CODECs adopts the variable length coding method. This paper proposes special registers and instruction set for bit stream process in order to accelerate the decoding process of the variable length code. The instruction set shares the conventional data path to minimize additional costs. And bit stream is read from the memory instead of the special port. Therefore the instruction set minimizes the change of the processor, and is adopted without any additional input controller and buffer, and accelerate decoding process of variable length code. The data path of the instruction set needs additional 65 bits memory and 344 equivalent gates, 0.19 ns delay under TSMC $0.25{\mu}m$ technology. The instruction set reduced the execution time of the variable length code decoding process in H.264/AVC by about 55%.

Background: This study aimed to measure the opportunity income by identifying the economic length of stay (ELOS) which is the intersection point of daily revenue and cost on appendectomy and pneumonia cases. Methods: The research subjects were 460 patients of appendectomy and 606 patients of pneumonia, discharged from a general hospital between July 1, 2009 and June 30, 2010. ELOS calculated with both of total revenue on diagnosis-related group (DRG) and fee-for service (FFS). The cost is calculated by activity-based costing system of the hospital. Results: Average length of stay (ALOS) of appendectomy was 4.48 days and its average revenue per case were 1,710,215 (1,989,105) won by DRG (FFS). The variable cost was 491,262 won which was 28.7% (24.7%) of DRG (FFS) total revenue. And 97.2% of the total variable cost was incurred within 2 days from admission. The ELOS was 4 (5) days in DRG (FFS). Shortening three days (two days) would increase opportunity income 52.0% (82.2%) in DRG (FFS). ALOS of pneumonia case was 4.86 days and its average revenue per case were 489,448 (761,426) won by DRG (FFS). The variable cost was 27,230 won which was 5.6% (3.6%) of DRG (FFS) total revenue. Thirty-eight point nine percent of the daily variable cost was incurred in discharge date. The ELOS was 2 (4) days in DRS (FFS). Shortening three days (one day) would increase opportunity income 27.6% (37.2%) in DRG (FFS). Conclusion: The ELOS would be used by strategic index for achieving minimum profit and developing the ways to get there. But we also should not pass over that the opportunity income obtained by the reducing ALOS may cause some problem of quality.
