Experimental Study for Overtopping Performance and Control System of Overtopping Wave Energy Convertor (월류 파력 발전 구조물 통합 축소 모형 시험을 통한 월류 성능 및 제어 시스템에 관한 실험적 연구)

  • Wave overtopping reef system with guide vanes convert incident wave energy on the reef type structures into electric power. Previous studies decided shape parameters likes slope, height of the sloping arm and shape of guide vane. In this paper, using these shape parameters produce 1/7 scale model and construct integration scale model system combining water pressure head turbine, power generation, power control, operating control and monitoring system. In these systems, we measure the overtopping and power generation with different wave heights and periods and compare the results with the previous studies. This was confirmed designed overtopping and power generation, then we suggest efficient control system.

A Fundamental Study on the Vertical-Axis Wind Turbine for Fishing Boat using Numerical Analysis (수치해석을 이용한 어선용 수직축 풍력터빈의 기초연구)

  • In this study, the flow characteristics and structural safety of a 500W class vertical-axis wind turbines(VAWT) for a fishing boat are investigated by numerical simulations. Guide vanes to increase the performance of the VAWT are investigated. And the best guide vane in the numerical simulations is applied to the VAWT. Also, modal analyses are performed to find out the natural frequencies of the VAWT, and the resonance safety of the VAWT is evaluated. The structural analysis of the VAWT is carried out by one-way FSI(Fluid Structure Interaction). And the results are used for the evaluation of structural safety according to IEC 61400-1 code. Finally, the possibility of the installation of the VAWT on the wheelhouse of a 9.77ton class fishing boat is checked. The results of the present research could be used as one of the fundamental data to design a VAWT for a fishing boat.

Study on the Effect of Design Parameters of the Vane Type Inertial Separator Using Commercial CFD Code (상용 CFD 프로그램을 사용한 베인형 관성분리기의 설계인자 영향 검토)

  • Since the intake air of gas turbine engine of marine purpose contains water particles, inertial separator for separating the air and water particles are provided. Saw type and wave type separator are now used to separate inflow water particle from the gas. In this paper, the design parameters of saw type separator are studied by numerical simulations. Using the commercial CFD program, Star-CCM+, Lagrangian-Eulerian method was used to perform the analysis of two phase flow of the mist in the air. This method solves Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes equations in Eulerian framework for the continuous phase, while solves equation of motion for individual particles in Lagrangian framework. Lagrangian multiphase method was applied to monitor the particles of different sizes and shapes and to verify collision between particles by chasing particles. Water particles were injected through injectors located at the inlet of the separator and escape mode was used which assumes that the particles attached on the surface of inertial separator were removed from the simulation, effectively escaping the solution domain. Through the numerical computations with the inlet condition of constant water particle size in the wetness fraction of 85%, efficiency of eliminating the water particle and the pressure drop between the inlet and outlet were examined.

The Role of Slits and Swirl Vanes on the Turbulent Flow Fields in Gun-Type Gas Burner with a Cone-Type Baffle Plate (콘형 배플판을 갖는 Gun식 가스버너의 난류유동장에 대한 슬릿과 스월베인의 역할)

  • The gun-type gas burner adopted in this study is generally composed of eight slits and swirl vanes. Thus, this paper is studied to investigate the effect of slits and swirl vanes on the turbulent flow fields in the horizontal plane of gas swirl burner with a cone type baffle plate measured by using X-probe from hot-wire anemometer system. This experiment is carried out at flow rate 450 $\ell$/min in the test section of subsonic wind tunnel. The axial mean velocity component in the case of burner model with only swirl vanes shows the characteristic that spreads more remarkably toward the radial direction than axial one, it does, however, directly opposite tendency in the case of burner model with only slits. Consequently. both slits and swirl vanes composing of gun-type gas burner play an important role in decrease of the speed near slits and increase of the flow speed in the central part of a burner because the biggest speed spurted from slits encircles rotational flow by swirl vanes and it drives main flow toward the axial direction. Moreover, the turbulent intensities and turbulent kinetic energy of gun-type gas burner are distributed with a fairly bigger size within X/R<0.6410 than burner models which have only slits or swirl vanes because the rotational flow by swirl vanes and the fast jet flow by slits increase flow mixing, diffusion, and mean velocity gradient effectively.

  • At the limited space, the air conditioning may have difficult to control temperature or humidity for home use. Nowdays, the people reponse to temperature or humidity sensitively. This becomes the Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) is an important factor for comfortably. Heat recovery ventilator (HRV) is used for the solution of inconsistency between IAQ and power-saving. Also, the thermoelectric element is applied to HRV and compared with temperature efficiency and verifying the capacity of the system. To improve the temperature efficiency a single motor and thermoelectric element with the conductive guide vane is experimented. The results shows that it can save 23 W by using the single motor. The developed system of 250 CMH capacities with the thermoelectric element reveals the temperature efficiency improvement of 4.01% in cooling period and 2.98% in heating period compared to the conventional system.

  • Recently, plastic products in air-intake parts of automotive engines have become very popular due to advantages that include reduced weight, constricted cost, and lower intake air temperature. However, flow-induced noise in air-intake parts becomes a more serious problem for plastic intake-manifolds than for conventional aluminum-made manifolds. This is due to the fact that plastic manifolds transmit more noise owing to their lower material density. Internal aerodynamic noise from an idle speed control actuator(ISA) is qualitatively analyzed by using a scaling law, which is expressed with some flow parameters such as pressure drop, maximum flow velocity, and turbulence kinetic energy. First, basic flow characteristics through ISA passage are identified with the flow predictions obtained by applying computational fluid dynamics techniques. Then, the effects on ISA passage noise of each design factors including the duct turning shape and vane geometries are assessed. Based on these results, the preliminary low noise design for the ISA passage are proposed. The current method for the prediction of internal aerodynamic noise consists of the steady CFD and the scaling laws for the noise prediction. This combination is most cost-effective, compared with other methods, and therefore is believed to be suited for the preliminary design tool in the industrial field.

Micro In-situ Tests on Overconsolidated Clay Prepared in Chambers (토조내에 준비된 과압밀 점토에 대한 모형 원위치 시험)

  • Tn this study, model soil deposits are prepared in large test chambers to minimize the scale effects. Also, slurry of mixture containing 50 percent kaolin clay and 50 percent silica has been consolidated to simulate the process of natural soil deposit formation and to reduce the consolidation time. To provide a more detailed description of varying soil properties along the soil profile of model clay deposits and to compare the in-situ test results with those from prototype tests, miniature in-situ tests, including vane shear, piezoprobe, and cone penetration tests were conducted in each of the clay deposits. The current results indicate that consistent soil deposits were prepared for the current and previous test programs. Also, reasonable predicting methods of prototype behavior based on model in-situ test results were suggested in this study by examining differences between the test results from both the model and prototype tests.

  • This paper is studied to investigate the effect of slits and swirl vanes on the development of turbulent flow fields in gun-type gas burner with a cone type baffle plate because this gas burner is generally composed of eight slits and swirl vanes. All of turbulent characteristics including mean velocities were measured in the horizontal plane and cross section by using X-type hot-wire probe from hot-wire anemometer system. This experiment is carried out at flow rate 450 l/min in the test section of subsonic wind tunnel. Slits cause the fast jets, and then they have the characteristic that the flow is not adequately spread to radial direction and has long flow length and very small flow velocity distribution in the central part. On the contrary, swirl vanes does not have long enough for adequate flow length to downstream because the rotational flow diffuses remarkably to radial direction. However, the suitable arrangement between slits and swirl vanes causes effective flow width and flow length, and then it promotes fast flow mixing over the entire region including central part to increase turbulence more largely and effectively. Therefore, it is thought as a very desirable design method in gun-type gas burner to locate slits on the outside of swirl vanes.

Net Shaping Process to Minimize Cutting amount of Turbocharger Control Plate (터보차저 컨트롤 플레이트의 절삭량 최소화를 위한 정형공정)

  • Turbocharger is a device for increasing the power of a vehicle engine. The control plate is the main component for fixing the vane of the turbocharger. Now, the control plate is made of austenite steel cutting after the casting process. It has excellent corrosion, heat resistance and mechanical characteristics of material. However, present the process is made by cutting after casting. when cutting is processed after casting, so materials, processing time, and processing energy are lost. Therefore, this study proposes a process to powder compact use of stainless steel Deklak2 and to minimize amount of cutting through net shape process. The mechanical properties of Deklak2 were verified by tensile test, hardness test and relative density measurement, and the governed equation was defined. Also, the curvature radius 1, 2 and the density, affects the shape, were selected as the design parameters, and the best process conditions was proposed through the Taguchi method and the evaluation of SN ratio. And then prototype molds were fabricated and compared with the results of the finite element analysis for the verification, and it was found that the tendency of relative density and dimension was coincided. Therefore, it was found that the amount of cutting can be minimized by only the net shape process after the sintering process and it can be applied to mass production.

Development of Turbine Mass Flow Rate Model for Variable Geometry Turbocharger Using Artificial Neural Network (인공신경망을 이용한 가변 기구 터보차저의 터빈 질량유량 모델링)

  • In this paper, we propose a turbine mass flow rate model for a variable geometry turbocharger (VGT) using an artificial neural network (ANN). The model predicts the turbine mass flow rate using the VGT vane position, engine rotational speed, exhaust manifold pressure, exhaust manifold temperature, and turbine outlet pressure. The ANN is used for the estimation of the effective flow area. In order to validate the results estimated by the proposed model, we have compared estimation results with engine experimental results. The results, in addition, represent improved estimation accuracy when compared with the performance using the turbine map.
