  • In order to see the stratification related to the heat flux In Deukryang Bay, the oceanographic data on July 12, 1994 and the meteorological data of Kohung and Kwangju meteorological stations were analysed. The temperature durerences between the sea surface and the near bottom were 1~3 ton spring tide (July 12, 1994) In Deukryang Bay. The temperature anomalies were high about 3t during summer In 1994. These mean that the non mixing was not effective In destroying the stratification due to the sea surface heating by the solar radition, even though it was on spring tide. The maximum solar radiation was about 600 ly/day, which was the value of the same date of oceanographic observation. The sensible and the latent heat flux which are 0~100 ly/day were not so varied during summer. The absorbed heat flux through the sea surface was mostly lost by the back radiation. which ranges are about 0~-400 ly/day. The dimensionless mixing parameter related to the buoyancy flux was 5~150$\times$$10^{-5}$. The efficiency of tidal mixing to destroy the stratecation was 0.4~0.6%.

  • For studying growth of sea squirt, Halocynthia roretzi, from laboratoy grown seeds, in situ culture experiment was carried out off Hansando located in the southern part of Korea from February 1984 to July 1986. In the growth of the mean body height, sea squirt grew up to 9.15 cm during the above period after they were seeded at about 0.05 cm. The meat weight of 1.27 g at the beginning increased to 41.69 g from February 1985 to March 1986. The decreasing tendency in body height, body breadth, total weight and meat weight of sea squirt was observed during the summer season in 1985 when the water temperature reached $23.53^{\circ}C$ the maximum value in monthly mean, and the specific gravity of sea water remained at the lowest level of 1.0233 in monthly mean. Sea squirt became gradually elongated with the decreasing tendency in the relative growth ratio of body breadth to body height with aging. The monthly mortality of sea squirt was especially higher in June and July than in the other months, and the average monthly mortality was $10.83\%$.

  • A paleomagnetic investigation was carried out to analyze magnetostratigraphic information and to evaluate the relationship between paleoenvironment and magnetic properties in sedimentary sequences of piston cores recovered from the abyssal basin of the southwestern Pacific. Pateomagnetic results revealed that the sediments had a stable remanent magnetization and recorded both normal and reversal polarities. The age of sediments was from late Pliocene and Pleistocene determined by matching the polarities with the geomagnetic time scale. The sedimentation rates were in the range of 0.63-1.85 mm/$10^3$ year which were extremely low rates. The results of the paleomagnetic analyses indicated that intervals of the magnetically stable layers as well as high value of susceptibility were significantly affected by the input changes which resulted input of large-quantity materials of relatively stable magnetic carriers.

  • We examined the appearance of cold water in the southwest region of the East Sea, based on the sea surface temperature (SST) at the east coast of Korea and buoy data in Donghae ($37^{\circ}31$'N, $130^{\circ}00$'E, 80 km east away from Donghae port) and Pohang ($36^{\circ}21$'N, $129^{\circ}46$'E, 35 km east away from Ganggu port) from June to August in 2013. Also, the serial oceanographic data of National Fisheries Research and Development Institute (NFRDI) were used to see the oceanographic conditions for June and August in 2013. The SST anomaly at the east coast showed negative values in $3{\sim}6^{\circ}C$ from 2 July. At Janggigab, the SST anomaly showed negative value amount to $10^{\circ}C$ in 8 July. The negative values of SST anomaly continued to the middle of August at Janggigab. The wind speed was 6~11 m/s and the direction was south-southwestly in 1 July. The wind speed amounts to 6~16 m/s in 2 July. It means that the strong wind induced the upwelling effect by a day. The temperature was lower than normal at the depth in 20 m of the East Sea in June and August. The air pressure was 996~998 hPa in the beginning of July. It was the lowest air pressure during the studied period. The correlation was 0.3 between the SST anomaly and air pressure. It was suggested that the appearance of cold water in the East Sea was influenced by a stirring due to wind and low air pressure as well as coastal upwelling.

  • We analyzed surface sediments to explain the substrate characteristics of sea cucumber Stichopus japonicus habitat. The analyses included grain-size determination, water content (WC), loss on ignition (IL), chemical oxygen demand (COD), and acid volatile sulfide (AVS) content. We obtained data on sea cucumber density, weight, and length at each station in a marine farming area in the middle of Korea's Taean coast on the West (Yellow) Sea in May, 2012. The apparent density of S. japonicus was high in coarse and bimodal sediments, whereas it was low in fine and unimodal sediments. The mass of S. japonicus was greater in fine than in coarse sediments, showing a different trend from sea cucumber density. The values for WC, IL, COD, and AVS in surface sediments were higher in areas with high densities of S. japonicus than in areas with low sea cucumber densities. In particular, the concentration of AVS was much higher than the value proposed in Japanese criteria for areas with high S. japonicus density.

  • We analyzed the ocean environmental data from water sample and automatic measurement instruments with the Incheon-Jeju passenger ship for 18 times during 4 years from 2001 to 2004. The objectives of this study are to monitor the spatial and temporal variations of ocean environmental parameters in coastal waters of the Yellow Sea using water sample analysis, and to compare and analyze the reliability of automatic measurement sensors for chlorophyll and turbidity using in situ measurements. The chlorophyll concentration showed the ranges between 0.1 to $6.0mg/m^3$. High concentrations occurred in the Gyeonggi Bay through all the cruises. The maximum value of chlorophyll concentration was $16.5mg/m^3$ in this area during September 2004. The absorption coefficients of dissolve organic matter at 400 nm showed below $0.5m^{-1}$ except those in August 2001 During 2002-2003, it did not distinctly change the seasonal variations with the ranges 0.1 to $0.4m^{-1}$. In the case of suspended sediment (SS) concentration, most of the area showed below $20g/m^3$ through all seasons except the Gyeonggi Bay and around Mokpo area. In general SS concentration of autumn and winter season was higher than that of summer. The central area of the Yellow Sea appeared to have lower value $10g/m^3$. The YSI fluorometer for chlorophyll concentration had a very low reliability and turbidity sensor had a $R^2$ value of 0.77 through the 4 times measurements comparing with water sampling method. For the automatic measurement using instruments for chlorphlyll and suspended sediment concentration, McVan and Choses sensor was greater than YSI multisensor. The SeaWiFS SS distribution map was well spatially matched with in situ measurement, however, there was a little difference in quantitative concentration.

  • This study examined the optimum conditions and obtained the basic data for processing semi-dried sea cucumber flakes. During the boiling process, the weight and length of the sea cucumber decreased to 45.61% and 55.87%, respectively. Thereafter, there was a gradual decrease in the weight and length of the sea cucumber, which were finally maintained at 30.00% and 50.93%, respectively. The moisture content during drying was 38.37% after 3 hours at $60^{\circ}C$, and 36.56% after 5 hours at $30^{\circ}C$. However, the decrease in moisture content was slowly at 60 hours and $4^{\circ}C$, reaching a final value of 68.9%. The length of boiled sea cucumber during drying decreased to 66.35% after 11 hours at $60^{\circ}C$, and 68.90% after 24 hours at $30^{\circ}C$. The chromaticity and hardness tended to increase during the drying process. Moisture content and water activity of sea cucumber flakes decreased from 81.48% (0.963) to 33.50% (0.763), respectively, after 3 hours at $60^{\circ}C$. Following this, the moisture content and water activity continuously decreased to 30.75% (0.608) at 4 hours and 19.47% (0.437) at 5 hours, respectively. The overall acceptance score was 4.11 and 3.89 for 4 hours dry sample and 5 hours dry sample, respectively. However, the score was not statistically significant.

  • An electrolytic enrichment technique was used to measure low levels of tritium in seawater around the Korean peninsula. Tritium concentrations were determined for surface seawater samples collected from the East Sea, the South Sea, and the Yellow Sea. The tritium concentrations in surface seawater samples from the study area ranged from $0.12 BqL^{-1}\;to\;1.50BqL^{-1}$ with a mean value of $0.60{\pm}0.35 BqL^{-1}$. The means of the tritium concentration were $0.54{\pm}0.30 BqL^{-1}$ for the East Sea, $0.48{\pm}0.35 BqL^{-1}$ for the South Sea, and $0.77{\pm}0.32 BqL^{-1}$ for the Yellow Sea. The tritium concentrations in the sea areas did not show much difference no matter where the samples were taken. Due to the limited number and distribution of sampling points, no systematic change in tritium levels with latitude was observed. Measured tritium levels were similar to those observed in other data collected near Japan, but higher than mid-Pacific Ocean measurements.

  • AtoN Accident causes navigation dangerous to ships and reduces the credibility of aids to navigation. The most light buoys on the sea have the highest accident rate from the influence of sea weather such as wind, current, and waves. However, in Korea, despite the different sea weather conditions in each sea area, in calculating the dynamic stability of the light buoy, there is a problem that only limit value conditions are applied to all sea areas. Thus, the purpose of this study was to analyze the dynamic stability of the LL-26(M) light buoy, the most installed buoy of its kind on the sea and suggest a stable operation plan for the LL-26(M) light buoy. To achieve this, after analyzing the weather for each sea area of the previous study related to the light buoy, the dynamic stability (inclination angle) was estimated by applying to the representative light buoys of each sea area wherein the number of accidents caused by sea weather was high. As a result of this study, the inclination angle of LL-26(M) light buoy for each sea area was different. That is, the inclination angle caused by winds was 10.329°-36.868°, the inclination angle caused by currents was 0.123°-18.834° and the inclination angle caused by waves was 4.777°-20.695°. The results of study can be used as basic data useful for installation standards for each sea area for stable operation of the LL-26(M) light buoy.

  • After finishing Cold War, the U.S. Navy's ability to Sea control has been gradually eroded last 15-20 years. The global security environment demands that the surface Navy rededicate itself to sea control, as a new group of potential adversaries is working to deny U.S. navy command of the sea. China has been increasing their sea denial capability, such as extended anti-surface cruise missile and anti-surface ballistic missile. To cope with this situation, the U.S. Naval Surface Forces Command has announced Surface Forces Strategy: Return to Sea Control. It is a new operating and organizing concept for the U.S. surface fleet called 'distributed lethality'. Under distributed lethality, offensive weapons such as new ASCMs are to be distributed more widely across all types of Navy surface ships, and new operational concept for Navy surface fleet's capability for attacking enemy ships and make it less possible for an enemy to cripple the U.S. fleet by concentrating its attack on a few very high-value Navy surface ships. By increasing the lethality of the surface ships and distributing them across wide areas, the Navy forces potential adversaries to not only consider the threat from our carrier-based aircraft and submarines, but they now consider the threat form all of those surface ships. This idea of using the distributed lethality template to generate surface action groups and adaptive force package and to start thinking about to increase the lethal efficacy of these ships. The U.S. Navy believes distributed lethality increases the Navy's sea control capability and expands U.S. conventional deterrence. Funding new weapons and renovated operating concept to field a more lethal and distributed force will enable us to establish sea control, even in contested area. The U.S. Navy's Surface Forces Strategy provides some useful implications for The ROK Navy. First the ROK Navy need to reconsider sea control mission. securing sea control and exploiting sea control are in a close connection. However, recently the ROK Navy only focuses on exploiting sea control, for instance land attack mission. the ROK Navy is required to reinvigorate sea control mission, such as anti-surface warfare and anti-air warfare. Second, the ROK Navy must seek the way to improve its warfighting capability. It can be achieved by developing high-edge weapons and designing renewed operating concept and embraced new weapon's extended capabilities.
