Magnetic Properties and Relaxation of Vanadium Monolayer on Pd(001) Surface

  • We investigated the magnetism of vanadium monolayers on a Pd(001) surface. The electronic structure and the magnetic properties of the V/Pd(001) system were determined with the use of the full-potential linearized augmented plane-wave method within the general gradient approximation. Three magnetic configurations were studied: non-, ferro-, and antiferromagnetic. From the total energy calculations, we found that the V/Pd(001) system is the most stable in the antiferromagnetic configuration. The importance of relaxation on the magnetic properties of the systems was also studied. It was found that the Pd(001) surface covered with a V monolayer undergoes considerable relaxation in which the spacing between Pd layers increases in all three magnetic configurations. Contrary to the Pd interlayer spacing, the distance between the V overlayer and the topmost Pd layer is reduced. The interlayer spacing between the V overlayer and the Pd surface layer is the largest for the antiferromagnetic configuration. In the relaxed antiferromagnetic structure, the magnitude of the calculated magnetic moments on the V atoms was $1.31\;{\mu}_B$. The presence of the vanadium monolayer does not affect the paramagnetic properties of the Pd(001) surface.

  • Recently, one of the hydrogen production methods has attracted using dense metallic membrane. It has high hydrogen permeation and selectivity which hardly could adopt industrial product because of high cost, hydrogen embrittlment and thermal stability. Meanwhile, vanadium has high hydrogen solubility and it use to instead of Pd-Ag amorphous membrane. Aluminum carried out blocking hydrogen diffusion on grain boundary therefore protecting hydrogen embrittlement. Most of dense metallic membrane is solution diffusion mechanism. The solution diffusion mechanism was very similar hydrogen storing steps such as steps of metal hydride. Thus, V-Al composites were fabricated to use hydrogen induced mechanical alloying. The fabricated V-Al composites were characterized by XRD, SEM, EDS and simultaneous TG/DSC analyses. The hydrogenation behaviors were evaluated using a Sievert's type automatic PCT apparatus. The hydrogenation behaviors of V-Al composites was evaluated too low hydrogen stored capacity and fast hydrogenation kinetics. In PCI results, V-Al composites had low hydrogen solubility, in spite of that, hydrogen kinetics was calculated very fast and hydrogen absorption/desorption contents were same capacity.

  • V-groove device was fabricated for precision coupling of planar optical splitter and optical fibers. V-groove was made through select wet etching of Si wafer by using KOH solution. Etching rate and surface roughness were checked, changing KOH composition(10, 20, 30, 33, 40 wt.%) and etching temperature (50, 60, 70, $80^{\circ}C$) to fabricate V-groove device effectively. Etching rate was the fastest as $1.84\;{\mu}m/min$ in case of etching by 20 wt.% KOH on $80^{\circ}C$, surface roughness was the best in case of etching by 33 wt. % KOH on $80^{\circ}C$.

  • Additively manufactured (AM) Ti-6Al-4V alloys exhibit a dominant acicular martensite phase (α'), which is characterized by an unstable energy state and highly localized corrosion susceptibility. Electrochemical critical localized corrosion temperature (E-CLCT, ISO 22910: 2020) and electrochemical critical localized corrosion potential (E-CLCP, ISO AWI 4631: 2021) were measured to analyze the localized corrosion resistance of the AM Ti-6Al-4V alloy. Although E-CLCP was measured under mild corrosive conditions such as human body, the validity of evaluating localized corrosion resistance of AM titanium alloys was demonstrated by comparison with E-CLCT. However, the mechanisms of resistance to localized corrosion on the as-received and heat-treated AM Ti-6Al-4V alloys under E-CLCT and E-CLCP differ at various temperatures because of differences in properties under localized corrosion and repassivation. The E-CLCT is mainly measured for initiation of localized corrosion on the AM titanium alloys based on temperature, whereas the E-CLCP yields repassivation potential of re-generated passive films of AM titanium alloys after breaking down.

Comparing Resistances to Pitting Corrosion of Additive Manufactured Ti-6Al-4V Alloys in NaCl and NaBr Aqueous Solutions (NaCl과 NaBr수용액에서 적층가공으로 제조된 Ti-6Al-4V 합금의 공식 저항성 비교)

  • Resistances to pitting corrosion of additive manufactured (AM) Ti-6Al-4V alloys in 0.6 M NaBr and 0.6 M NaCl aqueous solutions were compared using micro-droplet cell techniques. With respect to the pitting corrosion resistance, this study focused on two different types of halide anions in aqueous solutions, i.e. $Br^-$ and $Cl^-$. The differences between $Br^-$ and $Cl^-$ halide anions for breakdown on passive films of AM Ti-6Al-4V alloy were explained using Langmuir adsorption model with their equilibrium adsorption coefficients. The results of the analysis showed that the lower resistance to pitting potential of AM Ti-6Al-4V alloy in $Br^-$ aqueous solution was attributed to the higher equilibrium adsorption coefficient of Br-. In addition, micro-electrochemical test results showed that the pitting corrosion resistance of dark grains in additive manufactured Ti-6Al-4V alloy was lower as compared to that of bright grains due to the larger volume of ${\alpha}^{\prime}$ phase that caused the susceptibility to pit initiation.

Antiviral Efficacy of Pralatrexate against SARS-CoV-2

  • Novel coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) has caused more than 100 million confirmed cases of human infectious disease (COVID-19) since December 2019 to paralyze our global community. However, only limited access has been allowed to COVID-19 vaccines and antiviral treatment options. Here, we report the efficacy of the anticancer drug pralatrexate against SARS-CoV-2. In Vero and human lung epithelial Calu-3 cells, pralatrexate reduced viral RNA copies of SARS-CoV-2 without detectable cytotoxicity, and viral replication was successfully inhibited in a dose-dependent manner. In a time-to-addition assay, pralatrexate treatment at almost half a day after infection also exhibited inhibitory effects on the replication of SARS-CoV-2 in Calu-3 cells. Taken together, these results suggest the potential of pralatrexate as a drug repurposing COVID-19 remedy.

Bulk Heterojunction Solar Cell using Ru Dye Attached PCBM

  • Ru dye (Z-907) is a crucial photosensitizing material in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). To enhance the utilization of Ru dye's photosensitizing properties in bulk heterojunction solar cells, a method was developed to synthesize phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) nanoparticles that are chemically linked to Ru dye. PCBM contains a methoxy (-OCH3) group, whereas Ru dye incorporates a carboxyl group (-COOH) within its molecular structure. By exploiting these complementary functional groups, a successful bond between Ru dye and PCBM was established through an anhydride functional group. The coupling of PCBM with Ru dye results in a modification of the energy levels, yielding lower LUMO (3.8 eV) and HOMO (6.1 eV) levels, compared with the LUMO (3.0 eV) and HOMO (5.2 eV) levels of Ru dye alone. This configuration potentially facilitates efficient electron transfer from Ru dye to PCBM, alongside promoting hole transfer from Ru dye to the conducting polymer. Consequently, the bulk heterojunction solar cells incorporating this Ru dye-PCBM configuration demonstrate superior performance, with an open circuit voltage (Voc) of 0.62 V, short circuit current (Jsc) of 0.63 mA cm-2, fill factor (FF) of 65.6%, and a photovoltaic conversion efficiency (η) of 0.25%.

Variability of Surface Water Properties in the Japan/East Sea on Different Time Scales

  • This study examined the multi-scale variabilities of sea surface temperature (SST) and salinity in the Japan/East Sea (JES) based on statistical analyses of observational data, with a focus on the northwestern part of the sea. The regionality of JES SST variability was estimated for different frequency ranges on semimonthly (11-17 days), monthly to seasonal (30-90 days), quasi-semiannual (157-220 days), and quasi-biennial (1.5-3 years) time scales using cluster analyses of daily gridded SST data for 1996 to 2007 from the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA). Several significant peaks and regional cores were found in each frequency range of the SST anomaly (SSTA) oscillations. Quasi-semiannual SSTA oscillations with high amplitude were found in the south-southwestern part of the Japan Basin ($41-43^{\circ}N$) and were amplified in the area adjacent to Peter the Great Bay. Oscillations with periods of 79 and 55 days also prevailed over the southwest Japan Basin between the Yamato Rise and the continental slope. A similar method was applied to classify SST and the annual cycle of surface salinity using Generalized Digital Environmental Model (GDEM) gridded data. The Tatarskii Strait and adjacent area showed the most specific annual cycles and variability in salinity on interannual to interdecadal time scales. The most significant inverse relationship between surface salinity in the Tatarskii Strait and southern JES areas was found on the interdecadal time scale. Linkages of sea water salinity in the Tatarskii Strait with Amur River discharge and wind velocity over Amurskii Liman were also revealed.

Dynamically Induced Anomalies of the Japan/East Sea Surface Temperature

  • Variability of sea surface temperature (SST) in the Japan/East Sea (JES) was studied using complex empirical orthogonal function (CEOF) analysis. Two daily data sets were analyzed: (1) New Generation 0.05o-gridded SST from Tohoku University, Japan (July 2002-July 2006), and (2) 0.25o-gridded SST from the Japan Meteorological Agency (October 1993-November 2006). Linkages with wind stress curl were revealed using 6-h 1o-gridded surface zonal and meridional winds from ancillary data of the Sea- WiFS Project, a special National Centers for Environmental Prediction/National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCEP/NCAR) product (1998-2005). SST anomalies (SSTA) were obtained by removing the seasonal signal, estimated as the leading mode of the CEOF decomposition of the original SST. Leading CEOF modes of residual SSTA obtained from both data sets were consistent with each other and were characterized by annual, semiannual, and quasi-biennial time scales estimated with 95% statistical significance. The Semiannual Mode lagged 2 months behind the increased occurrence of the anticyclonic (AC) wind stress curl over the JES. Links to dynamic processes were investigated by numerical simulations using an oceanic model. The suggested dynamic forcings of SSTA are the inflow of subtropical water into the JES through the Korea Strait, divergence in the surface layer induced by Ekman suction, meridional shifts of the Subarctic Front in the western JES, AC eddy formation, and wind-driven strengthening/weakening of large-scale currents. Events of west-east SSTA movement were identified in July-September. The SSTA moved from the northeastern JES towards the continental coast along the path of the westward branch of the Tsushima Current at a speed consistent with the advective scale.

LOW MASS RATIO CONTACT BINARY V410 Aur AND V776 Cas-II (질량비가 작은 접촉쌍성 V410 Aur과 V776 Cas-II)

  • New BVR CCD light curves of the low mass ratio contact binaries, V410 Aur and V776 Cas, were observed with the 61 cm reflector and a 2K CCD camera at the Sobaeksan Astronomical Observatory. The absolute dimensions of the low mass ratio contact binaries, V410 Aur and V776 Cas, were obtained using WD program from the published spectroscopic and newly observed photometric data. The evolutionary status of this type of binary system including V410 Aur and V776 Cas has been considered. We reconfirmed that the primary stars of the low mass contact binary system were located on the TAMS and secondary stars were located under the ZAMS in H-R diagram.
