  • The protection against transient instability and consequent out-of-step condition is a major concern for the utility industry. Unstable system may cause serious damage to system elements such as generators and transmission lines. Therefore, out-of-step detection is essential to operate a system safely. The detection of out-of-step is generally based upon the rate of movement of the apparent impedance. However such relay monitors only the apparent impedance which may not be sufficient to correctly detect all forms of out-of-step and cannot cope with out-of-step for a more complex type of instability such as very fast power swing. This paper presents the out-of-step detection algorithm using voltage frequency deviation. The digital filters based on discrete Fourier transforms (DFT) to calculate the frequency of a sinusoid voltage are used, and the generator angle is estimated using the deviation of the calculated frequency component of the voltage. The proposed out-of-step algorithm is based on the assessment of a transient stability using equal area criterion. The proposed out-of-step algorithm is verified and tested by using EMTP MODELS.

  • Islanding phenomenon of photovoltaic system is undesirable because it leads to a safety hazard to utility service personnel and may cause damage to power generation and power supply facilities as a result of unsynchronized re-closure. Anti-islanding protection is an important technical requirement for grid-connected PV system. Until now, various anti-islanding methods for detecting and preventing islanding of photovoltaic and other distributed generations have been proposed. Most of them are focusing on the anti-islanding performance of single PV system according to the related international and domestic standard test procedures. There are few studies on the islanding phenomenon for multiple photovoltaic operation in parallel. This paper presents performance analysis of anti-islanding function for grid-connected PV inverter systems when several PV inverters are connected in parallel.

  • The importance of improving the quality of electric power is being strongly raised, owing to an increasing use of sensitive and small-sized electronic devices and systems. The transient over-voltages on low-voltage power distribution systems are induced by direct or indirect lightning return strokes. These can cause damage and/or malfunction of the utility systems for home automation, office automation, factory automation, medical automation, etc. The behaviors of lightning overvoltages transferred through the transformer to the low-voltage distribution systems using a Marx generator were experimentally investigated. Furthermore, the coupling mechanisms of lightning overvoltages transferred to the low-voltage systems were clearly illustrated through a theoretical simulation using a Pspice program. The overvoltages in low-voltage ac power systems are rarely limited by the application of the surge arrester to the primary side of the distribution transformer. A superior surge protection scheme is to install surge protection devices at the service entrance switchboard and/or at the load devices in TN power systems.

  • In most power electronic applications, the AC power input provided by the electronic utility needs to first converted to a DC voltage. Such conversion is accomplished by a diode rectifier due to its circuit simplicity and low cost. However, since diode rectifiers have some intrinsic problems such as low power factor and high harmonic distortion, a wide use of such rectifiers may cause noises, malfunction and heat damage in both electrical power systems and electrical machinery systems. This paper proposes soft switched three-phase single switch boost-type converter. The proposed circuit can perform Zero Voltage Switched(ZVS) without using any current and voltage sensors. For this circuit, both simulation and experiments have been performed. The results not only confirmed the ZVS but also indicated that, compared to the conventional hard switched converter, the prosed circuit can improve the efficiency as much as 1.7 to 4.7[%] while keeping the same high power factor and small harmonic distortion in their AC input.

  • Islanding is the electrical phenomenon in a part of a power network disconnected from the utility, where the loads are entirely supplied by PV systems, and where the voltage and frequency are maintained around nominal values. But islanding may result in power-quality issues, interference to grid-protection devices, equipment damage, and even personnel safety hazards[4]. Therefore, islanding must be detected and stopped. The existing anti-islanding methods have NDZ(None-detection Zone) or power quality degradation. But PV-AF power generation system has the function of not only shunt active filter but also anti-islanding method without NDZ. In this paper, It is proved that PV-AF system has originally the function of anti-islanding without not only NDZ and but current distortion

  • In the field of architecture, concrete and steel bars are the most common and popular combinations. The relationship between the two in a structure is a complementary good that increases in utility when consuming both materials at the same time. However, the combination of the two, which has been perceived as semi-permanent, often faces repairs or reconstruction without its lifespan reaching decades. There are a number of deterioration factors at work for the reason for this phenomenon. Among them, the neutralization of concrete in particular refers to the process in which calcium hydroxide inside concrete reacts with carbon dioxide and loses alkalinity, which creates a corrosive environment for rebars inside concrete, causing serious damage to concrete. In this study, we intend to use a multi-physical analysis program using finite element analysis method to analyze the degree of carbonation according to the internal temperature and concentration of carbon dioxide in concrete, thereby contributing to the prediction of long-term neutralization of concrete and the research related to measures for neutralization of concrete.

  • One of the next frontiers in structural wind engineering is the design of tall buildings using performance-based approaches. Currently, tall buildings are being designed using provisions in the building codes and standards to meet an acceptable level of public safety and serviceability. However, recent studies in wind and earthquake engineering have highlighted the conceptual and practical limitations of the code-oriented design methods. Performance-based wind design (PBWD) is the logical extension of the current wind design approaches to overcome these limitations. Towards the development of PBWD, in this paper, we systematically review the advances made in this field, highlight the research gaps, and provide a basis for future research. Initially, the anatomy of the Wind Loading Chain is presented, in which emphasis was given to the early works of Alan G. Davenport. Next, the current state of practice to design tall buildings for wind load is presented, and its limitations are highlighted. Following this, we critically review the state of development of PBWD. Our review on PBWD covers the existing design frameworks and studies conducted on the nonlinear response of structures under wind loads. Thereafter, to provide a basis for future research, the nonlinear response of simple yielding systems under long-duration turbulent wind loads is studied in two phases. The first phase investigates the issue of damage accumulation in conventional structural systems characterized by elastic-plastic, bilinear, pinching, degrading, and deteriorating hysteretic models. The second phase introduces methods to develop new performance objectives for PBWD based on joint peak and residual deformation demands. In this context, the utility of multi-variate demand modeling using copulas and kernel density estimation techniques is presented. This paper also presents joined fragility curves based on the results of incremental dynamic analysis. Subsequently, the efficiency of tuned mass dampers and self-centering systems in controlling the accumulation of damage in wind-excited structural systems are investigated. The role and the need for explicit modeling of uncertainties in PBWD are also discussed with a case study example. Lastly, two unified PBWD frameworks are proposed by adapting and revisiting the Wind Loading Chain. This paper concludes with a summary and a proposal for future research.

  • The utility tunnels are the important facility as a mainstay of country because of the latest communication developments. However, the utilities tunnel is difficult to deal with in case of a fire accident. When a cable burns, the black smoke containing poisonous gas will be reduced. This black smoke goes into the tunnel, and makes it difficult to extinguish the fire. Therefore, when there was a fire in the utility tunnel, the central nerves of the country had been paralyzed, such as property damage, communication interruption, in addition to inconvenience for people. This paper is based on the fire occurred in the past, and reenacting the fire by making the real utilities tunnel model. The aim of this paper is the scientific analysis of the character image of the fire, and the verification of each fire protection system whether it works well after process of setting up a fire protection system in the utilities tunnel at a constant temperature. The fire experiment was equipped with the linear heat detector, the fire door, the connection water spray system and the ventilation system in the utilities tunnel. Fixed portion of an electric power supply cable was coated with a fire retardant coating, and a heating tube was covered with a fireproof. The result showed that the highest temperature was $932^{\circ}c$ and the linear heat detector was working at the constant temperature, and it pointed at the place of the fire on the receiving board, and Fixed portion of the electric power supply cable coated with the fire retardant coating did not work as the fireproof. The heating tube was covered with the fireproof about 30 minutes.
