  • In this paper, we consider a cognitive radio system operating as secondary user. It uses an empty channel that is not currently used by primary users having the license to the channel. In the previous works, secondary user looks for an empty channel by choosing any channel in order or randomly and by sensing the channel to distinguish whether primary users are using. But if primary user is fixed type, we will find an empty channel faster than the mentioned channel selecting methods by using a method considering prior information about cases that primary user used the channel, since it is possible to analogize the channel access possibility of primary user according to regular time and position. Therefore, we propose a channel searching method based on the channel list for the purpose of reducing the channel searching time and improving throughput of secondary users. Firstly, we determine a weighting value of each channel based on the history of channel activities of primary users. This value is added to current channel state buffer and we search an empty channel from channel with smallest value to one with the biggest value. Finally, we compare the performances of the proposed method with those of the sequential channel searching and the random channel searching methods in terms of the average channel searching time and the average number of transmissions of secondary user.

  • In this paper, we propose an optimal path search algorithm between each node and midpoint that applies the time weighting. Services for using a location of mid point usually provide a mid point location-based on the location of users. There is a problem that is not efficient in terms of time because a location-based search method is only considered for location. To solve the problem of the existing location-based search method, the proposed algorithm sets the weights between each node and midpoint by reflecting user's location information and required time. Then, by utilizing that, it is possible to search for an optimum path. In addition, to increase the efficiency of the search, it ensures high accuracy by setting weights adaptively to the information given. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm is able to find the optimal path to the midpoint compared with the existing method.

  • Background: Published manuscripts are the main source of biological knowledge. Since the manual examination is almost impossible due to the huge volume of literature data (approximately 19 million abstracts in PubMed), intelligent text mining systems are of great utility for knowledge discovery. However, most of current text mining tools have limited applicability because of i) providing abstract-based search rather than sentence-based search, ii) improper use or lack of ontology terms, iii) the design to be used for specific subjects, or iv) slow response time that hampers web services and real time applications. Results: We introduce an advanced text mining system called PubMine that supports intelligent knowledge discovery based on diverse bio-ontologies. PubMine improves query accuracy and flexibility with advanced search capabilities of fuzzy search, wildcard search, proximity search, range search, and the Boolean combinations. Furthermore, PubMine allows users to extract multi-dimensional relationships between genes, diseases, and chemical compounds by using OLAP (On-Line Analytical Processing) techniques. The HUGO gene symbols and the MeSH ontology for diseases, chemical compounds, and anatomy have been included in the current version of PubMine, which is freely available at http://pubmine.kobic.re.kr. Conclusions: PubMine is a unique bio-text mining system that provides flexible searches and analysis of biological entity relationships. We believe that PubMine would serve as a key bioinformatics utility due to its rapid response to enable web services for community and to the flexibility to accommodate general ontology.

  • this study is to determine whether color, icon, sorting methods of brief description about materials, and postioning methods of final records affect the usability of the OPAC(Online Public Access Catalog) screen designs in terms of success rate, search time, and users' preferences. The findings suggest that OPAC systems can be optimized to enhance user's performances conflict with each other, designers should give more weight to performance because of the library's mission of meeting users' information needs.

  • This research analyzed how the main requisites of faceted navigation as names of facets, subterms of facets, order of facets, too many results were user-centric. On the research method, this research analyzed the results of the three keywords retrieved in the 15 university libraries' catalogs and how was user's familiarity to the terms. Although domestic universities have serviced facet navigation, the names of the facet of publication date and series title in format and the terms under the facets as multimedia and nonbook material, media material are too difficult intuitively to understand and there were lots of formal terms used in cataloging rules and the terms librarians have usually used. Because of the terms, there is high possibility to deteriorate users' satisfaction and usability to library catalog in future. Even though they serviced facet navigation, there was also weakness as too many results and the university libraries need to use relevance ranking method to solve the weakness. This research has found the possibility of being used too many of levels of the facets and this may also badly affect the users' experience to library catalog.

  • While sharing information through Internet by Web page or XML, familiar labels of information items will reduce the confusion among users. The advises of the language experts for choosing familiar terms may cost money and time, but an automated Indicator can help a user select right terms without any cost. This paper collects Indicators that can be easily found over Internet and compares the efficiency of them for selecting familiar terms. The collected indicators are the number of words in a term, the frequency used in a related Web sites, and the number of search results in portal sites. The results conclude that the found terms by the frequency matches 76% for women's and 71% for men's, which tells that the frequency can be a reference for selecting familiar terms.

  • This paper deals with an integrated system that facilitates researchers to do motif and domain search effectively and systematically. The system we developed is constructed on the basis of the integration of various resources related to motif, domain, and protein family. Those resources that can be classified into databases and search programs are dispersed to be available in Internet. In order to develop this system, we extracted core contents of diverse databases, which are required to analyze the protein function in terms of motifs or domains, to construct local databases and installed motif or domain search programs on our server, which corresponding database has as its own search program. Diverse utilities and CGI (Common Gateway Interface) programs make the databases and the search programs interlocked and web-based graphical user interfaces integrate all the components of our system. Employing our integrated system, end-users can receive its one-stop service to do protein function analysis systematically and effectively, without surfing many sites in Internet and wasting time over integrating search results.

  • An expert search method using a large amount of academic data that can provide users with representative research results and advice is required. Since the existing expert search methods perform the expert search based on user profile or activity information, they have a problem that it is hard to discriminate the expert when we do not know the user profile or activity information. In this paper, we propose an academic expert search method using the importance and quality of a paper. The importance of a paper is computed by considering its scarcity and up-to-date topics. The quality of a paper is evaluated by considering the number of citations, IF of Journal, recency and author relations. To show the superiority of the proposed method, we compare it with the existing scheme through the performance evaluation in terms of recall and precision.

  • With the increasing availability of information in electronic form, it becomes more important and feasible to have automatic methods to retrieve relevant information in the Internet. A deficiency of traditional information retrieval systems is that search terms are often different from those indexed by the systems. Thus, users ma either retrieve wrong information or miss what they really want. In this paper, e used an automatic query expansion based expansion based on term distribution to enhance the performance of information retrieval. Also this thesis proposed the method for setting the threshold according to area distribution in order choose additional terms.

  • Using grounded theory, this study investigated users' information seeking behaviors associated with their perceptions of uncertainty. Based on a theoretical sampling, 17 doctoral students in the field of business management were recruited. Data was collected through the methods of questionnaire, interviewing, and think-aloud descriptions. The results identified user perceptions of uncertainty in the following stages: identification of information needs, selection of information systems, selection of search terms, actual use of systems, and evaluation of search results. In addition, positive aspects of uncertainties were presented. Major implications relate to information system and service improvements.
