The purpose of this study, which was processed from March $22^{nd}$ to April $9^{th}$ of 2010, was to figure out recognition, well-formed instructions, and Practical application about dental hygiene devices based on the dental health characteristics of 350 adults who dwell in Busan and Gyeongnam regions. Also, this study recommended the adults to use dental hygiene devices and provided such devices to help individuals take care of their dental health at home. The collected data was statistically processed with a statistics SPSS (Statistical Packages for Social Science 14.0. SPSS Inc. USA) program. First of all, in order to demonstrate the characteristics of the sample population statistics and that of the descriptive data, frequency analysis was performed and to find out the relationship between variations of the dental health, Chi-squared test through Crosstabs was operated. According to the study, recognition and Practical application of dental hygiene devices were very low. Therefore, public announcement about necessity and effectiveness of such devices should be reinforced nationwide and instructions on choosing the right device and using of the dental hygiene devices based on patients' conditions by dental hygienic human efforts gathered from dental health organization should be carried out.
Objectives : The purpose of this study was to investigate the factors related to the awareness level of community water fluoridation program. Methods : 700 subjects were surveyed among the residents living in Incheon Metropolitan City. Data were collected on awareness of community water fluoridation program, general factors, oral health behavior, self-reported oral health and oral health interest. The factors related to the awareness level of community water fluoridation program were analyzed by t-test, a one way ANOVA and multiple linear regression analysis. Results : 1. Subjects' ages were 40~59 years, monthly average incomes were more than 3 million won and higher their educational levels had a higher awareness level of community water fluoridation program(p<0.01). 2. People who brushed their teeth more than three times a day, used oral hygiene devices, and had periodic oral examination and removed plaques were had higher awareness level of community water fluoridation program(p<0.01). Especially, the use of oral hygiene devices was the strongest factor in relation with the awareness level of community water fluoridation program(p<0.01). 3. People who had a fine self-reported oral health, highly interested in dental hygiene and made an effort to keep oral health were had higher awareness level of community water fluoridation program(p<0.001). Conclusions : The awareness level of community water fluoridation program was related to oral health behavior, self-reported oral health and oral health interest. So, in order to expand the areas for community water fluoridation program, it is important to educate to the right information about objectives, safety, dental caries preventing effect of the community water fluoridation program. And the education and publicity on general oral health will have an affirmative effect on expanding community water fluoridation program.
Objectives: This study aimed to identify the level of digital oral health literacy among Korean adults in Gangwon-do. Methods: A survey was conducted through face-to-face interviews with adults aged 30-89 residing in Gangwon-do, South Korea. The independent variables were socio-demographic characteristics, including gender, age, education level, income, and occupation. The dependent variable was digital oral health literacy. The statistical analysis included Independent t-test, one-way ANOVA, Pearson correlation analysis, and multiple linear regression analysis, all performed using the SPSS 27.0 software program. Results: The elderly and those with poor socioeconomic status (p<0.001) had lower average scores due to poor digital oral health literacy. The ease of searching for oral health information and the utilization of digital devices to search for information on oral health displayed a significant relationship (r=0.730, p<0.001). To develop the use of digital devices, simplifying the search for oral information (p<0.001) is essential. Conclusions: All socio-demographic characteristics, except gender, displayed a correlation with the level of digital oral health literacy. Both environmental and individual aspects of the respondents' living conditions must be considered to improve digital oral health literacy.
Background: In our study, a silver diamine fluoride (SDF) compound for the treatment of dental caries was synthesized to characterize its remineralization activity upon direct application to deciduous teeth. This study aimed to use microscopic computed tomography (microCT) and nanoindentation to evaluate whether SDF composite application could effectively arrest dental caries in five exfoliated primary molars. Methods: Carious teeth were extracted and visually examined using quantitative photofluorescence devices (Qraycam and QraypenTM). After performing microCT, the SDF composite was applied to the teeth according to the manufacturer's instructions. The researchers exchanged and precipitated the irritant saliva once daily for 1 week. The teeth were sectioned longitudinally through the centers of the mesial and distal surfaces, embedded, polished, and measured using nanoindentation. Thereafter, microCT was repeated. Statistical analyses were performed using GraphPad Prism software. Results: Following SDF composite application, a remineralized layer was observed on microCT images, and the hardness increased when measured using nanoindentation. We found that demineralized enamel presented with an increased number of irregular crystals in the deep carious lesion group compared with those in the shallow carious lesion group, resulting in a rougher surface. Conclusion: The SDF composite may be used for remineralization of early caries and cessation of advanced caries in primary molars.
The purpose of this study was to examine the knowledge of some adults about oral hygiene devices and their use of the oral hygiene devices. After a survey was conducted from December 3 to 17,2007, the answer sheets from 352 respondents were gathered. and the collected data were analyzed with a SPSS Ver. 17.0 program. The findings of the study were as follows. 1. Concerning the level of knowledge, the adults investigated knew the best that a toothbrush should be kept by making the head upward (76.77). On the other hand, they had little knowledge on water pick, tongue cleaner and interdental brush. 2. As for the level of use, they scored highest on keeping their toothbrushes by making the head upward(76.77), In contrast, they scarcely put water pick, electronic toothbrushes, tongue cleaner to use. 3. Knowledge impact of general characteristics involving mate(62.54). 50s over(66.28) and up, four family members(61.54), graduate school graduate(66.78), self-employed and, professionals(63.63), income of 1 to 1.5 million won(66.66), fathers were smokers(51.89) got the highest marks with a mean. 4. Use impact of the general characteristics female(47.70), 40s over 49s under(47.78), four family members(48.18), graduate school graduate(50.17), professionals(49.79), income of 1 to 1.5 million won(51.89), fathers were smokers(48.10) got the highest marks with a mean.
Purpose: Many home care treatments can be used to promote the health and longevity of dental implants; however, few studies are available to support the concept that self-performed oral hygiene behaviors are an essential tool for improving and maintaining oral health. We investigated age-stratified associations between dental health behaviors related to tooth brushing (TB) and oral hygiene product use in Korean adults with implants. Methods: A total of 1,911 subjects over 19 years of age who had 1 or more implants and who participated in the 2013 to 2015 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey were reviewed. Periodontal status was assessed using Community Periodontal Index (CPI) scores, and periodontitis was defined as a CPI greater than or equal to 3. The complex sampling design of the survey was utilized to obtain the variance and individual weight of each analyzed factor. A high CPI was the outcome variable, and the main explanatory variables were oral hygiene behaviors, such as TB, dental floss (DF), interproximal brushing, and mouth rinsing. Results: Almost all individuals with a lower CPI brushed their teeth twice or more per day, in contrast to those with a higher CPI, and were likely to use DF. The adjusted odds ratio of not using DF for a higher CPI was 1.83 (95% confidence interval, 1.35-2.49). Conclusions: TB was implemented more than twice a day by patients with good oral health, and the combination of TB and DF significantly reduced the prevalence of a higher CPI. Self-performed oral hygiene practices combining TB and DF were significantly related to a low prevalence of periodontitis in implant patients.
Objectives: This study aimed to examine the actual use of interdental care products (ICPs), such as dental floss (DF) and interdental brushes (IDB), among Korean youth, confirm their relevance to periodontal health, and determine the factors that influence the use of each product. Methods: This study included 15,912 young adults aged 19-39 years and data from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) (2007-2018). The usage rate of ICPs according to the characteristics of the subjects for each cycle of KNHANES was presented. Multivariable logistic regression analysis was performed to identify factors affecting the use of ICP. Results: The use rates of DF and IDB gradually increased until the 7th period, reaching 34.8% and 26.8%, respectively. The rate of using more than one ICP also showed a tendency to gradually increase from 25.2% in the 4th period to 50.0% in the 7th period. The use of interdental care products is related to gingivitis and periodontitis. Factors related to the use of ICP were gender, age, education level, frequency of brushing, and dental examination experience. Conclusions: The use of dental floss or interdental toothbrushes was related to periodontal health, but only half of the adults aged 19-39 years used ICP. Therefore, oral health experts should actively encourage the use of DF and IDB in young adults.
Objectives : The purpose of this study was to evaluate the relationship between smoking and peridontal diseases in Korean adults based on the data from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2010. Methods : The study subjects were 5,605 adults aged 19 years or older whose information were community periodontal index (CPI) and smoking status. and statistical analyses were conducted by applying complex sample analysis technique. Results : In terms of the relationship between smoking and periodontal status, the risk of periodontitis was 1.63-fold higher in smoker group than in nonsmoker group, and 1.02-fold higher even after adjustment of gender, age, income levels, educational background, alcohol consumption, exercising, body mass index (BMI), oral examination, the frequency of tooth brushing, the use of oral hygiene devices, and perceived oral health. Chi square analysis also showed that the prevalence rate of periodontitis was higher in smoker group than in nonsmoker group. Conclusions : It is very important to provide oral health education by smoking cessation and prevent periodontal diseases through anti-smoking campaign.
Objectives: The purpose of the study was to compare the oral health related characteristics between a long-term patients and general population. Methods: A direct interview questionnaire was completed by 160 patients and 165 general people from January 16 to April 31, 2014. The questionnaire consisted of general characteristics of the subjects, subjective health status, oral health behaviors, and needs of oral health. The data were analyzed using SPSS 18.0 program. Results: The long-term patients reported that most of them were denture wearers(38.1%), and had oral disease symptoms(62.5%) and xerostomia(65.6%). Most of the long-term patients were ex-smoker(31.3%) and did not receive regular dental check-up(92.5%). They did not know tooth brushing method(31.3%) and brushed their teeth less than twice a day(47.5%). Those who used tooth brush for more than 6 months accounted for 47.5%. Most of them did not use auxiliary oral hygiene devices(85.6%). The patients answered that oral health is not important(6.9%), oral health education is not necessary(7.5%), and oral cleaning(26.3%) should be included in oral health education. Conclusions: The self-reported oral health status of the long-term patients much more serious than the general population. It is necessary to educate the continuing oral health management program for the long-term patients.
The purpose of this study was to provide basic data for oral health promotion of service worker and their effective interpersonal relationships forming through the evaluation about service workers' awareness of the auxiliary oral hygiene devices and using behavior of it.
