  • To develope more competitive products, lots of attentions are paid to the study of user participation in the process of product design. In this circumstance, the user participation at a usability testing phase is relatively active. However, the usability testing in the controlled laboratory has some drawbacks. for stance, It needs a lot of money, efforts, and time. Most of all, it is difficult to collect a vast range of data and gain a fast feedback Recently, to overcome these difficulties mentioned above, international usability testing has been applied. Especially, usability testing Contents through Internet is considered most effective one. Because it has a lot of merits such as easiness of collecting remote user, simplicity of collecting data, cost effectiveness and so on. With these merits, this study takes advantage of using a WWW to carry out usability test and to collect remote usability data. And a website was development for posting computer simulated product so that the remote users can test its usability through internet.

Car-audio Position Evaluation Using 3-Dimensional Motion Analysis (동작분석을 이용한 카 오디오 위치 평가)

  • Usability has become a primary factor in determining the acceptability and consequent success of consumer product. It is common that the product usability is evaluated by objective performance measures and/or subjective user preference measures. This study is concerned with objective evaluation of the product usability using 3-dimensional motion analysis. We evaluated car-audio position using 3-dimensional motion analysis. The parameters investigated in this experiment were height of car-audio, left-right angle, and front-end angle. The experimental results showed that the usability evaluation method using motion analysis was consistent with user's subjective assessment. This objective method can be applied to not only car-audio position evaluation but also various consumer products'usability evaluation.

The Moderate Effect of the Attribute Alignability on the Relations Between Brand Attachment and Product Usage Behavior: Focus on Smartphone Users (브랜드 애착이 제품 사용 행동에 미치는 영향에 있어 속성 정렬 가능성의 조절적 역할: 스마트폰 사용자 중심으로)

  • This study examined the effects of brand attachment on internal modification behavior and usability expanding behavior of product. It has been found that the attribute alignable difference of product plays a moderating effect in internal modification behavior and usability expanding behavior. As a result of the study, the more brand attachment is high, the more behavior of product internal modification behavior and usability expanding behavior of product are high. In addition, consumers with high brand attachment showed greater internal modification behavior of the product when the difference of attribute alignability was high. Also, consumers with high brand attachment showed greater usability expanding behavior of the product when the difference of attribute non-alignability was high. Companies can improve brand attachment and retain loyal customers by increasing the difference of attribute alignability in consumer's product internal modification behavior. In terms of consumer's behavior of expanding product usage, we can strengthen brand attachment and can be used as a differentiated competitive advantage of products through the attribute nonalignable difference.

  • Product usability consists of many attributes such as learnability, efficiency, memorability, and so on. In particular, learnability is one of the most important attributes in product usability. Therefore, many people consider the primary criterion for a good user interface to be the degree to which it is easy to learn. Learnability represents the degree of how much can easily learn the usage of a product. It concerns the features of the interactive system that allow novice users to understand how to use it initially and then how to attain a maximal level of performance. In this study, we studied on the application of learning curve to evaluate product learnability. In order to validate the applicability, we carried out simple experiment using mobile phone. We got task completion times through the experiment and predicted the times using learning curve model. And then, we compared prediction times to task completion times. Finally, we identified that learning curve could apply to predict and compare product learnability.

  • Classivication scheme of usability element for the evaluation of consumer electronic product was developed in this study. Using hierachical structuring and clustering methods, usability element of consumer products interface is developed both for the performance perspective and for the image/appeal perspective of a product. Perfoormance element included variables such as simplicity, directness, learn- ability, flexibility, user support and effectiveness. Image/Appeal element included variables such as sensibility, descriptive impression, evaluation of appeal, and attitude towards the product. The classifi- cation scheme developed in this study is found to be comprehensive and robust relative to other existing paradigms. They can be effectively used and applied for the usability evaluation of consumer electronic products.

What Should Using a Software Product and Usability of the Software Product Be?

  • Usability is one of the most important concepts regarding software quality. It can be interpreted as the goodness associated with using the software product. This paper distinguishes the goodness of an individual using experience and the goodness of a product for using. This paper proposes a software quality view model which classifies software quality views into two broad categories of end view and means view. End view includes long-term view and short-term view which is classified further into performer's view on software activity and third party's view on software activity. Means view includes intrinsic view and contingency view. The analysis of ISO 25000 Series SQuaRE demonstrates the necessity to decompose product quality model and quality in use model into five models corresponding to the software quality views respectively. The analysis on playability shows that the universal definition of usability may be an illusion. The results provide the theoretical basis to build a comprehensive and consistent body of knowledge regarding software quality, which is consisted with the set of quality models and the theories explaining the relationships among the elements of the models.

Aesthetics versus Usability : Cultural Difference in Product Choice (심미성과 사용성 : 제품 선택에서의 문화차)

  • We explore the priority between product attributes such as aesthetics and usability in consumer decision-making. In the recent study in Germany, consumers preferred a visually beautiful product but discounted the value of aesthetics in actual product choice (Diefenbach & Hassenzahl, 2009). In contrast to the individualistic culture which values personal needs(e.g., Germany), recognition from other members has great importance in the collectivistic culture (e.g., Korea). We propose that Korean consumers weigh greater value on the attribute easily perceived from the product appearance (i.e., aesthetics). We replicated the procedure of the study conducted in Germany. As expected, participants highly valued aesthetics rather than usability in product choice. As for aesthetics, participants were likely to choose an expensive but beautiful product; on the contrary a less expensive and less usable product were likely to be chosen as for usability (Study 1). Moreover, usability was sacrificed for aesthetics in the trade-off condition (Study 2). The participants who chose the beautiful product reported higher social recognition desire whereas no difference was shown with respect to usability.

  • The evaluation of product may be classified by technical tests or by ergonomics assessments. If an ergonomics assessment is required, then the three types of interface dimension are available to the researcher. In this paper, we proposed the heuristic evaluation method for usability of product in the three types of interface dimension The evaluation method is used the fuzzy weighted checklist technique computerized for evaluating or comparing prototype of system and IT product.

The Influence of an Aesthetically Appealing Product on the Using Time, Flow, and Recall Memory (제품의 심미성이 제품의 사용시간, 몰입도, 정보 기억도에 미치는 영향)

  • Three experiments were carried out in order to determine whether users have longer using time, better recall of product information, and flow in an aesthetically appealing product (media player) in products offering good usability. For the experiment, fourteen emotional words were employed which were made up of 8 aesthetic and 6 usability words. In a preliminary experiment, the subjects freely used three media players and selected emotional words by a 7-point likert scale to distinguish a group of similar usability value and another group contrary to the other in aesthetic and usability value. (N=18) In the main experiment, it was hypothesized that users use more and have more flow and recalled information in the case of the aesthetically appealing product. Therefore, in the main experiment, we measured how much time subjects spent using the product and asked them to make an assumption regarding the time spent by the group that has the same usability value. We then examined the time they spent and the gap between the actual and estimated time. We also calculated the amount of menu information recalled via a questionnaire. In the last experiment, we selected the group of products contrary to each other in aesthetic and usability value and assessed the differences in using time, recall of product information, and flow. (N=18) The empirical results provide evidence that aesthetically appealing products are associated with greater flow and recall of product information than other products, thus supporting the hypothesis. In addition, it was found that there is a positive correlation between the aesthetically appealing product and flow index as well as with recalled information.

  • As the products which innovated usability have succeeded in the market, the usability of products is now considered as a new dimension of product design. This paper deals with the following questions: How has usability been embedded in the design and development of products? In the usability context, why have some breakthrough products succeeded commercially and others failed? What should be learned from the successes and the failures? For the purpose of discussing these questions, the photography industry was examined and the results were used as an illustration of the important points.
