  • In this study, the urban runoff models, ILLUDAS model and SWMM, are analyzed the probable peak discharge and discharge using rainfall distribution by Huff's method at Bum-uh chun area in Taegu city. The probability rainfall and intensity is analyzed by Pearson-III type. The rainfall duration, 90 minutes, is determined by the critical duration computed the maximun peak discharge for some rainfall durations. The peak discharge according to Huff's rainfall distribution types compute in order of type 3, type 4, type2, and type 1, so Huff's 3 type is selected as an adequate rainfall distribution in Bum-uh chun basin. ILLUDAS model and SWMM are shown as good models in Bum-uh chun, but SWMM is computed higher peak discharge than ILLUDAS model, so SWMM is shown as the adequate urban runoff model for the design of interior drainage in urban basin.

  • With urbanization in many countries, many pervious areas are being converted into impervious areas. These land use changes cause many negative impacts on runoff and water quality in the areas. Especially runoff volume and peak runoff are increasing with urbanization. In addition to the increased runoff, more pollutant transports to the downstream areas. For these reasons, Low Impact Development (LID) are nowadays being introduced in urban planning. For environment-friendly and economical urban development, the LID Integrated Management Practices (IMPs) are applied in various urban development. However, exact effects on runoff and water quality of various LID IMPs are not assessed with proper LID evaluation technique. Thus, the SWMM (Storm Water Management Model) 5.0 model was slightly modified to simulate the effect of infiltration manhole on runoff and water quality. For comparison of runoff and TSS (Total Suspended Solids) from the study area (26.5 ha), three scenarios were made in this study. It was found that runoff volume, peak runoff, and TSS could be reduced with infiltration manholes and pervious pavements to some degree. Although, there are many limitations in the analysis of LID effects on runoff and TSS, similar trends shown in this study would be expected with site-specific LID IMPs. Thus, it is strongly recommended that various site-specific LID IMPs, such as infiltration facilities, should be applied as much as possible for environment-friendly urban planning.

  • In this study, the mixed model of the surface rainfall-runoff analysis using grid data and Illudas model was applied to the urban watershed of Bulgang river. After the surface rainfall-runoff was estimated with GIS data, the runoff hydrograph was calculated using network analysis at Jeungsan bridge, which is the final output of watershed. Estimated runoff hydrograph in this study was compared to the observed runoff hydrograph which is converted from the water stage at Jeungsan bridge. The relative errors of total runoff volume and peak discharge showed the range values of 11.70%~16.30% and 1.10%~6.96%, and then the difference of peak times had the values of less than 1 hour for 4 storms. Therefore, the mixed model in this study could be considered to estimate the runoff hydrograph for the prevention of disasters in urban watershed.

  • Infiltration facilities are effective instruments to mitigate flood and can increase base runoff in urban watersheds. In order to analyze effects of infiltration trenches physical model experiments were conducted. The physical model facility consists of two soil tanks, artificial rainfall generators, tensiometers, and piezometers. The experiment was conducted by nine times and each case differed in rainfall intensity, rainfall duration and the type of ground surface. Measured quantities in the experiments are as follows: surface runoff, subsurface runoff, trench pipe runoff, groundwater level, water content, etc. The following resulted from the model experiment: The volume of subsurface runoff at trench watershed was maximum 78.3% compared with rainfall. This value is bigger than that of ordinary rate of subsurface runoff, and shows a groundwater recharge effect of trench. The time of runoff passing through the trench became earlier and the volume of runoff became larger with the increase of inflow into the trench, while trench exfiltration into ground became relatively smaller. The results of this study presented above show that infiltration trenches are effective instruments to increase base runoff during dry periods.

  • This study was conducted for two purposes. The first was the selection of the proper model for the urban runoff, and NPS(non-point source) loads and the second was the adjustment of the selected model through the calibration and the verification of the observed data on an urban drainage basin. The selected model for this study was the Storm Water Management Model(SWMM) developed and maintained by the US Environmental Protection Agency(EPA). In particular, the Runoff Block for the surface discharge and the Transport Block for the flow routing was used. The study basin is Youngdu basin, which is a typical developed urban drainage basin. The four rainfall events for the runoff and the two for the four NPS pollutants(SS, BOD, COD and TN) were used for the calibration and the estimation of the model parameters. This study performed the calibration with regard to the peak discharge, the time to peak discharge, the volume and the relative error for three items. It was shown that SWMM can successfully be used for the prediction of the runoff and the NPS pollutants discharge. The result of this study can be used as the basis for the analysis of the correlation between the runoff and the NPS pollutants discharges, and the analysis of the mass balance with the monthly and annual NPS loads in an urban drainage basin.

  • The changes of rainfall pattern and impervious covers have increased disaster risks in urbanized areas. Impervious covers such as roads and building roofs have been dramatically increased. So, it is falling the ability safety of flood defense equipments to exist. Runoff coefficient means ratio of runoff by whole rainfall which is able to directly contribute at surface runoff during rainfall event. The application of accurate runoff coefficients is very important in sewer pipelines design. This study has been performed to estimate runoff characteristics change which are applicable to the process of sewer pipelines design or various public facilities design. It has used the SHER model, a long-term runoff model, to analyze the impact of a rising impervious covers on runoff coefficient change. It thus analyzed the long-term runoff to analyze rainfall basins extraction. Consequently, it was found that impervious surfaces could be a important factor for urban flood control. We could suggest the application of accurate runoff coefficients in accordance to the land Impervious covers. The average increase rates of runoff coefficients increased 0.011 for 1% increase of impervious covers. By having the application of the results, we could improve plans for facilities design.

  • The flood damage has being increased because of urbanization due to the industrialization and the growth of population. Therefore, the hydrologic properties such as increasing the peak flow and decreasing the concentration time of the peak flow have been changed. Hence, the interest of an urban prevention against flood disasters has been centralized at the present day. The objectives of this study is to develop the suitable models to calculate the runoff characteristics from an urban basin. This study describes the properties of each urban hydrologic model and to determine suitable basin model using the ILLUDAS and SWMM models in the urban runoff models in the Yong-Ahm area at Chungju. The peak flow, concentration time and total runoff value of this area are compared and analyzed with regard to calculated and real values. After obtaining values appropriated from the ILLUDAS and SWMM models using 5 rainfall events in this areas, the peak flows, concentration times and total runoff values are compared with real values. As a result of this study, the Transport block of the SWMM is closely shown to real values.

  • Urban rainfall-runoff procedures are more complex than the agricultural procedures due to the spreading and development of town. And the applications of theses models are more difficult due to the change of real basins. In this study, I applied SWMM and Expert System to get runoff characteristics of an urbanized basin. Noen in Daejeon is selected as a study basin. Real basin data of facilities, rainfall, runoff, and various rainfall intensity equations are used. An Expert System is used to get the parameters of this model. These results can be applied to analyze the reaction tendencies of the urban basin with the time distributions of design rainfall and the urbanization.

  • This study proposed a rainfall-runoff model for the purpose of real-time flood warning in urban basins. The proposed model was based on the shot noise process, which is expressed as a sum of shot noises determined independently with the peak value, decay parameter and time delay of each sub-basin. The proposed model was different from other rainfall-runoff models from the point that the runoff from each sub-basin reaches the basin outlet independently. The model parameters can be easily determined by the empirical formulas for the concentration time and storage coefficient of a basin and those of the pipe flow. The proposed model was applied to the total of three rainfall events observed at the Jungdong, Guro 1 and Daerim 2 pumping stations to evaluate its applicability. Summarizing the results is as follows. (1) The unit response function of the proposed model, different from other rainfall-runoff models, has the same shape regardless of the rainfall duration. (2) The proposed model shows a convergent shape as the calculation time interval becomes smaller. As the proposed model was proposed to be applied to urban basins, one-minute of calculation time interval would be most appropriate. (3) Application of the one-minute unit response function to the observed rainfall events showed that the simulated runoff hydrographs were very similar to those observed. This result indicates that the proposed model has a good application potential for the rainfall-runoff analysis in urban basins.
