This paper presents an Around View Monitoring (AVM) stop-line detection based longitudinal position correction algorithm for automated driving on urban roads. Poor positioning accuracy of low-cost GPS has many problems for precise path tracking. Therefore, this study aims to improve the longitudinal positioning accuracy of low-cost GPS. The algorithm has three main processes. The first process is a stop-line detection. In this process, the stop-line is detected using Hough Transform from the AVM camera. The second process is a map matching. In the map matching process, to find the corrected vehicle position, the detected line is matched to the stop-line of the HD map using the Iterative Closest Point (ICP) method. Third, longitudinal position of low-cost GPS is updated using a corrected vehicle position with Kalman Filter. The proposed algorithm is implemented in the Robot Operating System (ROS) environment and verified on the actual urban road driving data. Compared to low-cost GPS only, Test results show the longitudinal localization performance was improved.
Population increase and economic developments can lead to construction as well as demolition of infrastructures such as buildings, bridges, roads, etc resulting in used concrete as a primary waste product. Recycling of waste concrete to obtain the recycled concrete aggregates (RCA) for base and/or sub-base materials in road construction is a foremost application to be promoted to gain economical and sustainability benefits. As the mortar, bricks, glass and reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) present as constituents in RCA, it exhibits inconsistent properties and performance. In this study, six different types of RCA samples were subjected classification tests such as particle size distribution, plasticity, compaction test, unconfined compressive strength (UCS) and California bearing ratio (CBR) tests. Results were compared with those of the standard road materials used in Queensland, Australia. It was found that material type 'RM1-100/RM3-0' and 'RM1-80/RM3-20' samples are in the margin of the minimum required specifications of base materials used for high volume unbound granular roads while others are lower than that the minimum requirement.
Recently, flowerbed median strips are being installed in urban highways for safety and scenery. In addition, efforts to enhance urban image through roadside flowerbeds and trees are being exerted for afforestation to enhance the urban environment. The sensibility of humans, such as the feeling of agreeableness of drivers must be considered when planning roads. However, not many researches on users on road environment are being conducted. Accordingly, KANSEI Engineering that is attracting attention nowadays was applied to form the image or sensibility of humans as definite object, in order to grasp the relation between the personal attributes of users and road formation with sensible factors considered when the road users evaluates the road scenery. As the result of research, streetscape was not evaluated based on individual factors such as roads, trees and buildings that form roads, but was based on sensibility image based on harmony of the overall road formation according to the changes of each factors.

Traffic noise pollution is a growing problem that highly affects the health of people in urban areas. In order to implement effective measures against traffic noise the noise mapping about its distribution is imperative. Urban traffic noise maps will help to establish the existing baseline so that we will be able to look for the effective way to control the noise. They will also let us see in an understandable and visual way how noise spreads from roads into residential areas. In this paper we considered three development types between roads and residential areas, and applied the interpolation of ArcGIS for noise attenuation with distance from the roads to find the noise level at the parcels positions in residential areas, and then generated the noise map using the interpolated results. Therefore we present results that the traffic noise level within residential areas exceed the national noise standard and also can estimate the noise level of individual parcels. These results can be used for traffic noise control planning or assessment of officially assessed land price in near future.
PURPOSES : The key point of a multimodal LOS (level-of-service) evaluation system is that all of the modes are mutually associated to determine each mode's LOS. For example, the LOS of the bicycle mode is measured based on not only bicycle volumes, but also automobile volumes. However, the Korea Highway Capacity Manual (KHCM) still focuses on the automobile mode in evaluating the LOS of the roads. Additionally, the KHCM's LOS of the other modes, except for the automobile, is not consistent with actual road conditions. The KHCM, therefore, needs to develop and introduce a multimodal LOS system in order to evaluate the service conditions more accurately. METHODS: As a preliminary step to the introduction of multimodal LOS research, in this study the current problem of the KHCM's LOS system through a close review and comparison with other HCMs (highway capacity manuals) was identified. Secondly, a field survey and investigation of the urban streets to apply the HCM's multimodal LOS system was conducted. Finally, a comparison analysis of the results of the HCM and KHCM LOS was performed. RESULTS: In the study, it was found that the results of the LOS for the automobile mode did not show a significant difference between the HCM and KHCM. However, the LOS of the bicycle and pedestrian mode tended to be worse in the multimodal LOS system, which results from considering the effects of the automobile mode. Moreover, it was found that many cases have the potential to improve the overall LOS conditions, while reducing the automobile capacity. CONCLUSIONS: With the introduction of the multimodal LOS system, road diet and complete streets can be easily applied to ans actual road improvement project. Ultimately, the multimodal LOS system should be introduced into the KHCM, which can then be applied to traffic impact studies and other road improvement projects for more accurate evaluations.
Five on-road measurements were made using a mobile laboratory (ML) to characterize spatial and temporal air pollutant distributions over roads around a day-care center in urban area on 30 August 2013. Fixed monitoring was also done near the day-care center using the ML during the periods between on-road measurements. On-road air pollution monitoring route was classified into seven sections and three zones to identify severe polluted roads among many roads having different traffic volumes and directions. Typical pollutants emitted from vehicles such as $NO_x$, black carbon, particle-bound polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, and submicron particles including nanoparticles were monitored using real-time instruments. Peak concentration episodes were frequently observed during the on-road measurements and most peaks were simultaneously monitored at four pollutants. Colored on-road air pollution map for each pollutant provides an insight on spatial air pollution distribution, showing heavily polluted roads and sections. Average on-road $NO_x$ concentration of each run was similar to that monitored at the nearest roadside air monitoring station.
Highway classification is an essential part of defining design criteria of roads. This study is to classify highways by factor analysis. To accomplish the objectives, factor analysis is performed for classifying highways using the traffic data observed at the permanent traffic count points in 2004. A total off variables are applied : AADT, K factor, D factor, heavy vehicle proportion, day time traffic volume proportion, peak hour volume proportion, sunday factor, vacation factor and COV(Coefficient of Variation). The results of factor analysis show that variables are divided into two factors, which are the factor related to the fluctuational characteristics of traffic volume and the factor related to heavy vehicle and directional volume characteristics. According to the results of cluster analysis, 353 permanent traffic count points are categorized into such three groups as type I for urban highway, type II for rural highway, type III for recreational highway, respectively.
As the risk of traffic accidents caused by mists emerged as a social problem, recently safety facilities to be prepared for mists are being actively installed when designing roads. But in some part, the facilities are being installed imprudently without analyzing the extent of occurrences of mists that would increase the risk of traffic accidents and appropriate countermeasures against the occurrences of mists are not being suggested. For that reason, in this study, first questionnaire surveys were executed on road users in order to draw the factors affecting the traffic accidents caused by mists, a mist traffic accident predicting model was developed and an accident seriousness determining model that can determine accident seriousness was developed. In this way, by extracting major factors affecting mist traffic accidents to grasp risk factors in roads to be caused by mists, safety of roads can be enhanced and traffic accidents in road operations can be decreased. As the affecting factors influencing mist traffic accidents, were extracted sightable distances, durations of mists and whether daytime or nighttime as major factors and the plan to install the facilities for the prevention of mist traffic accidents was suggested to prevent the traffic accidents to be caused by those factors and also the plan to operate roads considering sightable distances was suggested to solve the problem of insufficient sightable distances to be caused by mists was suggested. It is judged that the road safety in the areas where mists occur can be improved through foregoing methods.
In urban areas, signals can be blocked and reflected by buildings, reducing the reliability of global navigation satellite systems (GNSS). To address this, the zonotope shadow matching (ZSM) algorithm has been proposed to estimate the set-valued receiver position by calculating the GNSS shadow based on the zonotope. However, the existing study only analyzed the performance of ZSM in dense urban areas where GNSS shadows occur frequently, and the performance analysis in various urban environments was insufficient. Therefore, in this paper, we analyzed the performance of the ZSM algorithm in four urban environments with different characteristics. The results showed that the receiver position estimation performance of ZSM was relatively poor in environments where buildings were not densely populated, and the performance of ZSM was shown to be effective in urban environments with narrow roads and tall buildings.
The current procedure of estimating accident reduction benefit shows fixed accident rates for each level of roads without considering the various characteristics of roadway geometries, and traffics. In this study, in order to solve the problems mentioned in the above, models were developed considering the characteristics of roadway alignments and traffic characteristics. The developed models can be used to estimate the accident rates on new or improved roads, In this study, only urban highways were included as a beginning stage. First of all. factors influencing accident rates were selected. Those factors such as traffic volumes. number of signalized intersections, the number of connecting roads, number of pedestrian traffic signals, existence of median barrier, and the number of road lane are also selected based upon the obtainability at the planning stage of roads. The relationship between the selected factors and accident rates shows strong correlation statistically. In this study, roads were classified into 4 groups based on number of lanes, level of roads and the existence of median barriers. The regression analysis had been performed for each group with actual data associated with traffic, roads. and accidents. The developed regression models were verified with another data set. In this study, in order to develop the proposed models, only data on a limited area were used. In order to represent whole area of the country with the developed models. the models should be re-analyzed with vast data.
