The influence of moving rainstorms to runoff was analysed for the nonsymmetric shaped basins using kinematic wave theory. The distribution types of moving rainstorms are uniform, advanced, delayed and intermediate type, the nonsymmetric shaped basins are square, oblong and elongated shape. The runoff hydrographs were simulated and the characteristics were compared with the symmetric shaped basins for the rainstorms moving up, down and cross the basins with various velocities. The smallest differences of peak runoff of symmetric and nonsymmetric basins are appeared in the case of elongated basin, and the largest differences are shown at the oblong basin for the downstream direction. The identical results are shown for the upstream direction. The greatest peak runoff differences are shown in the delayed type rainstorm and the smallest differences are in the advanced type rainstorm for the crossstream direction. The oblong shaped basin generates the longest peak time and shortest peak time for the elongated shape basin.

An experimental analysis using three-dimensional Laser Doppler Velocimetry(LDV) measurement and computational analysis using the Reynolds stress model in FLUENT are conducted to give a clear understanding of the effect of blade loading on the structure of tip leakage flow in a forward-swept axial-flow fan operating at the maximum efficiency condition ($\Phi$=0.25) and two off-design conditions ($\Phi$=0.21 and 0.30). As the blade loading increases, the onset position of the rolling-up of tip leakage flow moves upstream and the trajectory of tip leakage vortex center is more inclined toward the circumferential direction. Because the casing boundary layer becomes thicker and the mixing between the through-flow and the leakage jet with the different flow direction is enforced, the streamwise vorticity decays more fast with the blade loading increasing. A distinct tip leakage vortex is observed downstream of the blade trailing edge at $\Phi$=0.30, but it is not observed at $\Phi$=0.21 and 0.25.

This study aimed at reviewing the case examples of environmental assessment of development projects within management zones, identifying problems and improvement opportunities and suggesting the direction of environmental assessment for management zones that are increasingly segmented Findings showed that first, the assessment of environment soundness in management zones must incorporate the national land environmental map and wide-area ecological axes established by the Ministry of Environment. Second, regarding development activities in management zones, rather than an issue of simply destroying natural environment in a development site itself during a development period, an issue of permanently isolating ecosystems from surrounding areas in a mid/long-term perspective and continually polluting water in mid-stream/upstream regions where sites are located must be considered. Third, in the case of development projects with vast areas, existing plant communities will be disturbed and the naturalness of vegetation will gradually decline due to foreign tree species introduced for landscape architecture. Therefore, creating buffer forests at forest boundaries and planting native tree species that are same as nearby tree species must be examined. Last but not least, when assessing the environmental soundness of management zones, it would be crucial to comprehensively review the environmental, social and locational features of management zones, including surrounding areas, and set the direction of environmental assessment accordingly.
In devising a numerical approximation for the convective spatial transport of a fluid mechanical quantity, it is noted that the convective motion of a scalar quantity occurs in one-way, or from upstream to downstream. This consideration leads to a new scheme termed a pure upwind difference scheme (PUDS) in which an estimated value for a fluid mechanical quantity at a control surface is not influenced from downstream values. The formal accuracy of the proposed scheme is third order accurate. Two typical benchmark problems of a wall-driven fluid flow in a square cavity and a buoyancy-driven natural convection in a tall cavity are computed to evaluate performance of the proposed method. for comparison, the widely used simple upwind scheme, power-law scheme, and QUICK methods are also considered. Computation results are encouraging: the proposed PUDS sensitized to the convection direction produces the least numerical diffusion among tested convection schemes, and, notable improvements in representing recirculation of fluid stream and spatial change of a scalar. Although the formal accuracy of PUDS and QUICK are the same, the accuracy difference of approximately a single order is observed from the revealed results.
A computational analysis using Reynolds stress model in FLUENT is conducted to give a clear understanding of the effect of blade loading on the structure of tip leakage flow in a forward-swept axial-flow fan at design condition ($\phi$=0.25) and off-design condition ($\phi$=0.21 and 0.30). The roll-up of tip leakage flow starts near the minimum static wall pressure position, and the tip leakage vortex developes along the centerline of the pressure trough within the blade passages. Near tip region, a reverse flow induced by tip leakage vortex has a blockage effect on the through-flow. As a result, high momentum region is observed below the tip leakage vortex. As the blade loading increases, the reverse flow region is more inclined toward circumferential direction and the onset position of the rolling-up of tip leakage flow moves upstream. Because the casing boundary layer becomes thicker, and the mixing between the through-flow and the leakage jet with the different flow direction is enforced, the streamwise vorticity decays more fast with blade loading increasing. The computational results show that a distinct tip leakage vortex is observed downstream of the blade trailing edge at $\phi$=0.30, but it is not observed at $\phi$=0.21 and 0.25.

It is unavoidable that the fuel spray impinges on the wall of piston cavity in a compact high-pressure D.I. diesel engine. Therefore the characteristics of impinging spray are the very significant information on the consideration and the simulation of its combustion processes including the formation mechanism of exhaust emission and the design of the combustion chamber. In this paper, the numerical simulation was performed to study the characteristics of impinging spray. The spray-wall impingement model used is Watkins and Park's model. Calculation parameters are the inclination angles and the ambient pressures. As the inclination angle increases, the impinging spray develops mainly to the direction of the downstream and scarcely flows to that of the upstream. The shape on the wall of the impinging spray is the circle in the case of the normal impingement, while it is the ellipse in that of the oblique impingement. As the ambient pressure increases, the growth of impinging spray on the wall in the radial direction decreases owing to the increase in the resistance of the ambient.
An ionization front (IF) surrounding an H II region is a sharp interface through which a cold neutral gas makes transition to a warm ionized phase by absorbing UV photons from central massive stars. We investigate the structure and instability of a plane-parallel D-type IF threaded by magnetic fields parallel to the front. We find that magnetic fields increase the maximum propagation speed of the IFs, while reducing the expansion factor, defined as the density ratio of neutral to ionized phases. IFs become unstable to distortional perturbations due to gas expansion across the fronts, exactly analogous to the Darrieus-Landau instability of ablation fronts in terrestrial flames. The growth rate of the IF instability is proportional linearly to the perturbation wavenumber as well as the upstream flow speed. The IF instability is stabilized by gas compressibility and becomes completely quenched when the front is D-critical. The instability is also stabilized by magnetic pressure when the perturbations propagate in the direction perpendicular to the fields. When the perturbations propagate in the direction parallel to the fields, on the other hand, it is magnetic tension that reduces the growth rate, completely suppressing the instability when ${\beta}$ < 1.5, with ${\beta}$ denoting the square of the ratio of the sound speed to the Alfven speed in the pre-IF region. When the front experiences an acceleration, the IF instability cooperates with the Rayleigh-Taylor instability to make the front more unstable. We discuss potential effects of IF instability on the evolution and dynamics of IFs in the interstellar medium.

In this paper, two discretization methods, hybrid and QUICK, are tested for the Navier-Stokes equations written in general nonorthogonal body fitted coordinates. Comparison is made by calculating two laminar flows at low Reynolds numbers of 10 - 100. One is a two-dimensional channel of gradually expanding cross section and the other is an axisymmetric flow through a circular tube having a circular constriction. Results show that the QUICK scheme results in a numerical solution more accurate than that of hybrid. The QUICK scheme also shows faster convergence for both test cases. As the number of grid points increases, all numerical solutions converge with more oscillation. The number of grid points in the y-direction(cross stream direction) is also shown to play a significant role in the approximation of convection term within separated flow zone.

An experimental study of model truss-type vertical gate consisting of a truss and a plate was presented in this paper to examine the structural dynamics of the gates. A 1:61 scale model was constructed for the 95 m prototype gate using an acrylic truss and an acrylonitrile butadiene styrene plate. The scaled model was tested in a 1.6 m wide concrete flume for two orientations to determine the effects of gate orientation on structural vibrations. Natural frequencies of the model gate was measured and calibrated with FEM predictions. Vertical vibrations were measured under various operational conditions, including a range of bottom opening heights and different upstream and downstream water levels. The gate model with reverse direction was preferred due to its low overall vibrational response and flow level combinations. The test results also provide a basic dataset for development of operations guidelines that minimize flow-induced vibrations of the gates.
