  • U-flanged truss beam is composed of u-shaped upper steel flange, lower steel plate of 8mm or more thickness, and connecting lattice bars. Upper flange and lower plate are connected by the diagonal lattice bars welded on the upper and lower sides. In this study the structural experiments on the U-flanged truss beams with various shapes of upper flange were performed, and the flexural and shear capacities of U-flanged truss beam in the construction stage were evaluated. The principal test parameters were the shape of upper flange and the alignment space of diagonal lattice bars. In all the test specimens, the peak loads were determined by the buckling of lattice bar regardless of the upper flange shape. The test results have shown that the buckling of lattice bar is very important design factor and there is no need to reinforce the basic u-shaped upper flange. However, the early lattice buckling occurred in the truss beam with upper steel bars because of the insufficient strength and stiffness of upper chord, and the reinforcement in the upper chord is necessary. The formulae of Eurocode 3 (2005) have presented more exact evaluations of lattice buckling load than those of KBC 2016.

  • PURPOSE: This study examined the effects on the upper extremity function, muscle strength, and hand function of a task-oriented training approach using a percussion instrument for patients with chronic stroke. METHODS: Twenty-four chronic stroke patients accompanied with upper extremity hemiplegia were selected for research and were classified randomly into 12 experimental groups and 12 control groups. The experimental group performed a task-oriented approach, and the control group performed upper extremity occupational therapy. Stroke upper extremity test, Jebsen-Taylor Hand Function test, upper extremity muscle strength test, and hand muscle strength test were measured before and after training in the evaluation process. RESULTS: In the upper extremity test and Jebsen-Taylor test, there were no significant differences between the groups. In the upper extremity muscle strength test, there were significant differences in shoulder flexion, internal rotation, and elbow flexion in the experimental group. In the hand muscle strength test, there were significant differences in the grip, tip Pinch, lateral Pinch, and 3-jaw chuck in the experimental group and significant differences in only grip, tip pinch, and lateral pinch in the control group. In addition, there were significant differences in the lateral pinch compared to the amount of change. CONCLUSION: Task-oriented approach using percussion instruments for upper extremity rehabilitation in stroke patients is effective in the upper extremity function and strength, hand function, and strength.

  • This study aimed to develop upper and lower bounds to predict the tunnel support pressure under the pile tip during the circular tunnel excavation. Most previous studies on the upper and lower bound methods were carried out for the single ground structures, e.g., retaining wall, foundation, ground anchor and tunnel, in the homogeneous ground conditions, since the pile-soil-tunnel interaction problem is very complicated and sophisticated to solve using those bound methods. Therefore, in the lower bound approach two appropriate stress fields were proposed for single pile and tunnel respectively, and then they were superimposed. In addition, based on the superimposition several failure mechanisms were proposed for the upper bound solution. Finally, these upper bound mechanisms were examined by shear strain data from the laboratory model test and numerical analysis using finite element method.

  • The purpose of this study was to show occlusion on the simple hinge articulator optionally mounted. Modelling of upper-lower jaw and simple hinge articulator were developed. This modelling of upper-lower jaw inserting wax bite was mounted imaginary on the modelling of simple hinge articulator by use of the computer simulation. From changes of THA(transverse horizontal axis)-incisor distance, Balkwill angle and THA deviation, eight types were mounted respectively. After removal of wax bite, upper-lower jaw position changing were compared with centric jaw relation. The results were as follows: 1. The change of THA-incisor distance had influence on mostly a vertical shift of upper jaw. 2. The change of Balkwill angle had influence on mostly a horizontal shift of upper jaw. 3. Inferior type in the THA deviations was the least shift of upper jaw. The above results suggest that the simple hinge articulator optionally mounted effect a shift of upper jaw.

  • The two-dimensional guillotine cutting problem is to maximize sum of piece profits that cut from one stock rectangle and widely applied in the industry. The branch-and-bound method for this problem uses complementarily several upper bounds(the Gilmore and Gomoryp[8]'s two-dimensional knapsack function and the Hifi and Zissimopoulos[10]'s method using one-dimensional knapsack problem, etc) to reduce the number of searched nodes. These upper bounds has a shortcoming that does not consider the bound and layout of pieces simultaneously. In this paper, we propose an efficient upper bound which can complement the shortcoming of existing upper bounds. The proposed upper bound needs less memory spaces and computing time. Computational results show that the proposed upper bound significantly contribute to reduce the computational amount of time and number of searched nodes in tree.

  • Lifting capacity and difficulty of task are influenced by body posture. In RULA and REBA, the body was divided into segments which formed two groups, A and B. Group A includes the upper and lower arm and wrist while group B includes the neck, trunk and legs. This ensures that whole body posture is recorded so that any awkward or constrained posture of the legs, trunk or neck which might influence the posture of the upper limb. This study aimed to measure MVC (maximum voluntary contraction) and subjective judgment in psychophysical method (Borg's scale) according to trunk and upper arm angle and to analyze results statistically. The results of this study were that lifting capacity was more influenced by interaction of body posture rather than angles of each part, and MVC variation according to trunk and upper arms angles should different patterns. This means that we consider the interaction of trunk angles and upper arm angles when we access risk factors of the postures. This survey would be also the basic data to evaluate difficulty of lifting tasks according to body postures ergonomically.

  • Purpose: This study describes the effects of kicking a ball training on balance and upper limb function in chronic hemiplegia. Methods: Thirty chronic stroke patients were randomly selected; Kicking a ball (n=10), Treadmill gait (n=10), Stepping on the ground group (n=10). The Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB) for balance and Foot Scan for weight distribution. Upper limb function was measured by the Manal Function Test (MFT). This treatment was performed five times a week for a total of 4 weeks. Results: Kicking group was significantly increased in SPPB (p<0.05) and MFT (p<0.05) between pretest vs post test and pretest vs follow-up. Conclusion: Kicking a ball was effective for improving weight acceptance on the paretic leg, balance and upper limb function. However, In terms of balance, the core stabilization that affected the upper extremity function was not evaluated. Thus, additional research may help determine correlation between core stability and upper limb function to improve balance.
