  • The mass and stiffness of upper wall-lower frame system(mixed building structures) change sharply at transfer floor due to different structural system in upper and lower part. These mixed building structures generally show the stiffness, weight or geometric vertical irregularities. The purpose of this study is to investigate the response characteristics of these structures by push-over analysis and nonlinear time history analysis. For four types of analysed models, only the variation of upper wall stories was considered. The conclusions of this study are following; (1) In the push-over analysis, yielding hinges in beams and columns of lower frame occurred at the base shear of similar magnitude in all models. But as the number of stories of upper wall increases, yielding hinges at ends of coupling beams were observed in the small magnitude of base shear. (2) In the nonlinear time history analysis, yielding of lower frame occurred at beams with as small ground acceleration as 55gal, and in upper walls yielding was concentrated on coupling beams and shear walls near the transfer floor. (3) As the number of stories of upper walls decreases, the story stiffness of the lower frames decreased relatively and the occurrence of soft stories in the lower frame was observed.

  • The purpose of this study was to clarify the wall components of Sarang-taechong in the upper class houses of Chosun dynasty. Physical trace method was used for this study. The samples were taken from the Sarang-taechong of 6 traditional Korean houses; Yunkyungdang, the ancient Chusa estate, Sunkyojang, Chunghyodang, Yangjindant, Unjorn. The makor findings were summarized as follows; 1) The common components of each wall were pillars, sanginbangs(upper horizontal beams), hainbangs (lower horizontal beams), door and windows. Changbangs(wood eave pieces that suported decoration blocks), changyos(a pice of wood fitted between the tops of pillars and upper tori cross beams), and morums(the top wainscot board laid horizontally between the bottom beam and the bottom portion of a window frame) were additional. 2) The composition of every south wall was symmetrical and the other threes were mixed symmetrical and asymmetrical. 3) The image of wall was classified-fine, strong, and modera e, according to the symmetry or asymmetry of wall composition, the width of each components, the kind of window.

  • The objective of this study is to investigate the behavior of 1/12 scale upper-wall lower-frame reinforced concrete structure subjected to earthquake excitations. For this purpose, Taft N21E earthquake accelerogram was simulated by using 4m$\times$4m shaking table. When the input acceleration is compared to that of output, it was found that simulation of shaking table is satisfactory. From the test results with peak ground acceleration(PGA) 0.22g, which corresponds to 0.11g in prototype by the similitude law, it can be observed that the model responded in elastic behavior and that large interstory drift occurred at the lower part of the structure.

  • The objective of this study is to investigate the seismic response of high-rise RC bearing-wall structures with irregularity. For this purpose, three 1:12 scale 17-story reinforced concrete model structures were constructed according to the similitude law, in which the upper 15 stories have a bearing-wall system while the lower 2-story frames have three different layouts of the plan : The first one is a moment-resisting frame system, the second has a infilled shear wall with symmetric plan and the third has a infilled shear wall with eccentricity, Then, these models were subjected to a series of earthquake excitations. The test results show the followings: 1) the existence of shear wall reduced greatly shear deformation at the piloti frame, but has almost the negligible effect on the reduction of the overturning-moment angle, 2) the frame with shear wall resists most of overturning moment in severe earthquake, 3) the torsional behavior is almost independent of the translational, 4) the absorbed energy due to the overturning deformation has the largest portion in the total absorbed energy.

  • The severe shortage of the available sites in the highly developed downtown area in Korea necessitates the construction of high-rise buildings which meet the need of residence and commercial activity simultaneously. • This paper presents the results of tests performed on the transfer girders which have been generally used between upper walls and lower frames in the hybrid structures. The 8 specimens were designed using (1) ACI method, (2) strut-tie model, and (3) X-type shear reinforcement cage. The capacities of the specimens are in general larger than the design values except the one designed according to strut-tie model. The reason for this difference seems to be due to the arbitrary allocation of transferred shear force to the path of direct compression strut and the path of indirect strut and tie. The failure modes turn out toe be (1) shear failure at critical shear zone, (2) compressive concrete crushing in the diagonal strut in the shear zone of transfer girder, and (3) compressive concrete crushing in the corner of upper wall.

  • Recently, Increasing residential-commercial buildings are composed of upper wall and lower frame type. As structural fragility, a large numbers of researchers have tried to develope the efficient analysis methods. But these studies were too theoretical and were not considered the lateral load which was required in analysing the transfer level in addition to being used nonlinear program which was difficult to use for practical design. thus, results of these studies we not appropriate to apply practical design, therefore, in this paper, the procedure of the current design practice were compared with that of used FEM method and presented new modeling method. in particular, an efficient analytical model which can be used in practical design of residential-commercial buildings for vortical and seismic loads was proposed and the usefulness of proposed model was verified.

  • In this paper, the behavior for transfer girder of the upper-wall and lower-frame structures was studied by the nonlinear finite element analysis. It was analyzed and compared with the experimental results. Analysis results showed that failure modes were progressed by a initial diagonal crack in the shear span between the edges of the load and intermediate support plate. The nonlinear finite element analysis could predict deformation, principal stress, ultimate load and concrete crack. Also analysis results showed good agreement the test results.

  • In this paper, the effect of the masonry infill walls on the seismic performance of the reinforced concrete(RC) frames with non-seismic details was evaluated through the static test of an masonry infilled RC frame sub-assemblage with non-seismic details of real size, and comparison with the test results of the RC frame sub-assemblage with non-seismic details. As the test results, lots of cracks occurred on the surface of the entire frame due to the compression of the masonry infilled wall, and the beam-column joint finally collapsed with the expansion of the shear crack and buckling(exposure) of the reinforcement. On the other hand, the stiffness of the shear force-story drift relationship decreased due to the wall sliding crack and column flexural cracks, and the strength finally decreased by around 60% of the maximum strength. The damage that concentrated on the upper and lower parts of columns was dispersed in the entire frame such as columns, a beam, and beam-column joints due to the wall, and the specimen was finally collapsed by expansion of the shear crack of the joint, not the shear crack of the column. Also, the stiffness of RC frame increased by 12.42 times and the yield strength by 3.63 times, while the story drift at maximum strength decreased by 0.18 times.
