Recent Advances in the Chemobiological Upcycling of Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) into Value-Added Chemicals

  • Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) is a plastic material commonly applied to beverage packaging used in everyday life. Owing to PET's versatility and ease of use, its consumption has continuously increased, resulting in considerable waste generation. Several physical and chemical recycling processes have been developed to address this problem. Recently, biological upcycling is being actively studied and has come to be regarded as a powerful technology for overcoming the economic issues associated with conventional recycling methods. For upcycling, PET should be degraded into small molecules, such as terephthalic acid and ethylene glycol, which are utilized as substrates for bioconversion, through various degradation processes, including gasification, pyrolysis, and chemical/biological depolymerization. Furthermore, biological upcycling methods have been applied to biosynthesize value-added chemicals, such as adipic acid, muconic acid, catechol, vanillin, and glycolic acid. In this review, we introduce and discuss various degradation methods that yield substrates for bioconversion and biological upcycling processes to produce value-added biochemicals. These technologies encourage a circular economy, which reduces the amount of waste released into the environment.

폐기물을 활용한 업사이클링 뷰티디자인 (Upcycling Beauty Design Using Waste)

  • This study delves into the realm of upcycling beauty design by repurposing discarded CDs, magazines, and fabrics. The study outlines a meticulous process for transforming waste into beauty designs. We created three upcycling beauty design works as part of this investigation. The first creation, called Silver Leaf, uses the silver section of CDs to craft leaves and stems. Achromatic colors are used as makeup to achieve cyber-inspired imagery. After carrying out silver-gray eye makeup, the lips were completed by affixing a CD component. The second creation is a firebird crafted by cutting or folding fashion magazines to create essential items. The colorful firebird image was completed using vivid color makeup of shades such as red and yellow. After proceeding with red eye makeup, the lips were completed by cutting and pasting magazine cutouts. The third piece is a spring flower, which involved selectively cutting lace patterns to complete a beauty design extending from head to face. The colors are spring-themed and encompass pink, yellow, and blue. Pink, blue, and green eyeshadows were applied on the lace, attached from head to face, chest, and lips. This study advocates for the prospect of upcycling beauty design using sustainable materials by repurposing waste resources. It also introduces the possibilities of creative activities in this field through upcycling. The study aims to play a role in changing the perception of environmental conservation, a concern of our times, through the use of sustainable resources.

환경가치관에 따른 업사이클링 화장품의 지각된 소비가치 및 구매행동 (Perceived Consumption Value and Purchase Behavior of Upcycling Cosmetics According to Environmental Values)

  • 국내 화장품 기업들은 ESG 경영을 통해 환경보호와 환경 관련 문제 해결을 위해 노력하고 있다. 본 연구는 서울·경기지역의 MZ세대 여성을 대상으로 환경가치관에 따른 업사이클링 화장품의 지각된 소비가치, 구매행동 간의 관계 및 영향력을 분석하였다. 아울러 연구 결과를 토대로 업사이클링 화장품에 관련된 제품개발 및 마케팅 전략 수립을 위한 기초자료를 제공하고자 하였다. 첫째, 각 변수 간의 모두 정(+)의 상관관계로 나타났다. 둘째, 환경가치관이 높아질수록 업사이클링 화장품의 지각된 소비가치가 높아지는 것을 알 수 있었다. 셋째, 환경가치관이 높아질수록 구매행동이 높아지는 것을 알 수 있었다. 따라서 업사이클링 화장품에 대한 긍정적 소비가치를 유도하고, 화장품 산업은 관련된 제품개발 및 차별화된 마케팅 전략 수립을 위한 기초자료로 도움이 될 수 있기를 기대한다.

중고등학생의 업사이클링 인지와 업사이클 패션제품 구매행동에 따른 환경의식, 의복재활용행동, 패션관심 (Environmental consciousness, clothing recycling behavior and interest in fashion by awareness of upcycling and purchasing behavior for upcycled fashion products of middle & high school students)

  • 중고등학생을 대상으로 업사이클링에 대한 인지와 업사이클 패션제품 구매행동에 따른 환경의식, 의복재활용행동, 패션관심의 차이를 살펴보았다. 중고등학생의 환경의식은 여자가 남자보다 높으며, 의복재활용행동은 디자인계 고등학생이 일반계 고등학생보다 높게 나타났다. 패션관심은 고등학생이 중학생보다, 디자인계 고등학생이 일반계 고등학생보다, 여학생이 남학생보다 높은 것으로 나타났다. 업사이클링에 대한 인지는 낮게 나타났는데 중학교와 일반고보다 디자인고에서 그리고 남학생보다 여학생이 많이 알고 있는 것으로 나타났다. 업사이클링에 대한 정보는 인터넷과 방송매체를 통해 얻는 것으로 나타났으며, 업사이클링에 대해 인지하는 학생들이 인지하지 못하는 학생들보다 환경의식, 의복재활용행동, 패션관심 모두 높게 나타났다. 중고등학생은 업사이클링에 대한 인지가 높지 않아 업사이클 패션제품을 구매한 경험이 적으며, 구매경험이 있는 학생들은 환경의식, 의복재활용행동과 패션관심이 모두 높게 나타났다. 업사이클 패션제품을 구매한 이유는 독특함과 디자인 때문인 것으로 나타나 환경보호 차원에서 시작된 업사이클 패션제품이라고 하더라도 제품의 디자인이 구매에 중요한 역할을 하는 것을 알 수 있었다.

업사이클링 패션제품의 지각된 가치 차원과 태도 및 구매의도의 관계 -유행혁신성의 조절효과- (Perceived Value Dimensions of Up-cycling Fashion Goods and the Relationship with Attitude and Purchase Intention -The Moderating Effect of Fashion Innovativeness-)

  • This study investigates the effect of perceived value on attitude and purchase intention of upcycling fashion goods. The study also examines the effect of perceived value on attitudes according to fashion innovativeness. The qualitative data analysis results from NVivo 10.0 showed that consumers paid attention to the creative design value, environmental value, scarcity value of upcycling fashion goods. Next, 201 effective questionnaires were analyzed using SPSS 22.0 and AMOS 20.0. The results are as follows. First, there were 5 factor solutions for the perceived value of up-cycling fashion goods: environmental value, creative design value, functional value, emotional value, and self-expression value. Second, environmental value, functional value, and self-expression value positively affected attitude; however, creative design value and emotional value did not affect attitude. Third, attitude positively influenced purchase intention of upcycling fashion goods. Fourth, there was a significant difference in the magnitude of the effect of self-expression value on attitude according to fashion innovativeness. The results of this study provide useful information for marketers or managers interested in upcycling fashion goods.

지역적 지속가능성의 실천으로서의 업사이클링 패션디자인 개발 - 동대문구 창신동을 중심으로 - (Developing upcycled fashion design for regional sustainability - Focusing on Changshin-dong area -)

  • The purpose of this study is to review and establish the three concepts of upcycling, zero-waste fashion design, and regional sustainability through a review of domestic and international case studies. Furthermore, it will provide the theoretical basis for using upcycling as a regional sustainability practice to create zero-waste fashion design. To conduct an empirical study, we systematized the stages of the survey on waste resources in Changsin-dong, the sourcing and utilization of waste resources, the design-planning stage, and the co-production with pattern and sewing masters as a suggested practice for regional sustainability. Through this study, we propose the possibility of regional sustainability by developing and sharing the method of zero-waste fashion design. The conclusion of the study as follows: First, upcycling fashion designs can be extended to a regional sustainability practice by taking the characteristics of social design into account. Second, by providing a design development process and methodology suitable for regional sustainability application, it is helpful to revitalize regional upcycling fashion brands and communities by providing data for upcycled fashion branding. Third, as part of the revitalization project for the Chang-shin and Soongin areas that started in 2014, using the region's economic, cultural, and environmental characteristics to make and sell high-value, upcycled fashion products will contribute to social and economic achievements and aid in solving regional problems.

업사이클 디자인 교육 방법을 통한 다양한 문화이해 수업 개발 (Understanding Multi-Cultures through the Upcycling Design Activity Classes)

  • 본 연구는 앞으로 경험하게 될 국가적 혹은 문화적 갈등상황에서 유연한 중재자의 역할을 수행하는 인재를 육성하는 것에 그 목적이 있다. 주요한 학습 내용은 업사이클 디자인 활동을 선정하여 수업에 접근한다. 모두의 문제인 폐기물 문제를 인식시키고 그 대안으로 거론되고 있는 업사이클 디자인 활동을 거쳐 각 문화들의 대표적인 특징과 배경을 탐구하는 수업방식이다. 군포YMCA 회원 학생들을 중심으로 수업은 진행되었으며 각 문화적으로 특징적인 소재를 업사이클 디자인을 통해 제작하였다. 모두 폐기물 재료를 사용하여 페트병으로 아프리카의 기린 만들기, 나무 기둥을 활용한 몽골 텐트 만들기, 소스병을 활용한 스노우 볼 만들기, 티셔츠와 섬유로 조각보 및 러그 만들기, 현수막으로 가랜드를 만드는 활동을 진행하였다. 이를 통해 학생들은 업사이클이라는 새로운 용어를 학습하게 됨과 동시에 환경문제에 관심을 보이게 되었다. 또한 각 문화를 대표하는 상징물을 제작하는 과정에서 그 유래와 탄생 배경 등을 탐구함으로써 타 문화에 대한 이해의 폭을 넓힐 수 있었다.

지속가능한 미래를 위한 폐플라스틱의 촉매 업사이클링 연구 동향 (Advancing Towards a Sustainable Future: Recent Trends in Catalytic Upcycling of Waste Plastics)

  • 플라스틱은 가공과 처리가 간단하여 매년 생산량이 증가하고 있으며 이에 따라 플라스틱 폐기물의 양 또한 매년 증가하고 있다. 플라스틱 폐기물 문제를 해결하기 위하여 촉매를 활용한 업사이클링 공정은 유망한 해결책으로 제시되고 있다. 다양한 금속(Ru, Pt 등) 및 지지체(TiO2, CeO2 등)가 폴리 올레핀계 플라스틱의 화학적 재활용에 적용되었다. 입자 크기를 조절하고, 지지체의 특성 및 이종 금속을 도입하여 액체 연료의 선택도를 향상시키고 메탄 생성 양을 줄이려는 시도가 있었다. 한편으로는 값비싼 귀금속의 양을 줄임으로써 최적의 촉매를 찾기 위한 연구를 진행하였다. 본 논문에서는 이러한 hydrogenolysis 반응 및 hydrocracking 반응에서 경제성을 높이기 위하여 어떠한 시도들이 있었는지 살펴보고자 한다. 이러한 관점에서 촉매 업사이클링 공정을 통해 플라스틱 폐기물 문제를 해결할 가능성을 제시하고자 한다.

저급 폐유지의 바이오디젤 원료 활용을 위한 중화탈산 및 FAME 전환 가능성 평가 (Evaluation of Neutralization and FAME Conversion of Low-grade Waste Oil as Biodiesel Feedstock)

  • The current mandatory domestic biodiesel blending ratio is 3.5%, which is planned to be gradually increased to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. The aim of this study was to improve domestic self-sufficiency in biodiesel raw oil by conducting a technical review on the possibility of utilizing waste oils, such as soup oil, chicken oil, and leather oil, as biodiesel feedstocks. These waste oils have an acid value that is too high to be converted directly into biodiesel. Therefore, a pretreatment to reduce the acid value is necessary. The neutralization process was examined as a potential technology for reducing the acid value. The oil recovery rate of the soup oil after neutralization was significantly low at 37.6 wt%. The oil recovery rates of leather oil and chicken oil were 66.49 wt% and 79.08 wt%, respectively. Based on biodiesel conversion experiment using waste oil with a reduced acid value, the conversions were analyzed as 89 wt%, 91.1 wt%, and 90.5 wt% for soup oil, leather oil, and chicken oil, respectively. Thus, it is technically possible to use soup oil, leather oil, and chicken oil as raw materials for producing biodiesel.

재료 및 기법의 특성에 기반하는 업사이클 패션 디자인 연구 (A Study on Upcycle Fashion Design Based on the Characteristics of Materials and Techniques)

  • The global fashion industry produces significant carbon emission and micro-plastics in oceans. Studies on sustainable design methods as such environmental issues in fashion are becoming intensely problematic. This study conducted a case study on 100 upcycle fashion brands to propose strategical upcycle fashion designs to compete in a sustainable fashion market. A literature review indicated that 3 types of textile wastes are generated as upcycling materials: post-producer, pre-consumer and post-consumer. Wastes are categorized together with 3 types of techniques: redesigning, reconstruction and handcrafting. This research derived 7 types of upcycle fashion designs that have the following features: to make luxury upcycle fashion products, to make sustainable grunge looks, to re-evaluate deadstocks, to recover vintage clothes, to convert waste into craft-arts, to offer solutions for damaged products, and to make zero-waste small fabric waste. The study results show that key drivers in the upcycle fashion design are the redesignability of materials and technique-related costs. This study implies that adopting appropriate design features can be a useful strategy for designers. New technologies will solve current problems and encourage them to design products in a new circular value system.
