광섬유 센서를 이용한 구조물의 열변형 및 온도 측정 (Thermal Strain and Temperature Measurements of Structures by Using Fiber-Optic Sensors)

  • Two types of fiber-optic sensors, EFPI(extrinsic Fabry-Perot interferometer) and FBG(fiber Bragg grating), have been investigated for measurement of thermal strain and temperature. The EFPI sensor is only for measurement of thermal strain and the FBG sensor is for simultaneous measurement of thermal strain and temperature. FBG temperature sensor was developed to measure strain-independent temperature. This sensor configuration consists of a single-fiber Bragg grating and capillary tube which makes it isolated from external strain. This sensor can then be used to compensate for the temperature cross sensitivity of a FBG strain sensor. These sensors are demonstrated by embedding them into a graphite/epoxy composite plate and by attaching them on aluminum rod and unsymmetric graphitelepoxy composite plate. All the tests were conducted in a thermal chamber with the temperature range $20-100^{\circ}C$. Results of strain measurements by fiber-optic sensors are compared with that from conventional resistive foil gauge attached on the surface.

  • 본 논문에서는 열팽창계수(CTE)가 거의 없는 카본게폭시, PZT 세라믹 박판, 그리고 열팽창계수가 큰 글래스/에폭시 층으로 이루어진 곡면형 복합재료 작동기(LIPCA)의 설계, 제작 및 성능실험에 대한 연구성과를 제시하고 있다. LIPCA의 른 요점은 기존 THUNDER의 성능을 유지하면서 이를 경량화 하기 위하여 THUNDER의 금속 층을 상대적으로 가벼운 섬유 강화 복합재료로 대체하는 것이다. 이러한 경량화 작업으로 LIPCA는 기존 THUNDER 보다 약 30~40% 정도의 무게를 감소시킬 수 있으며, 복합재료의 특성에 따라 설계의 유연성을 가질 수 있는 장점이 있다. 또한, 에폭시 수지를 사용함으로써 접착제 없이 평판 몰드에서 오토클레이브에서 177$^{\circ}C$로 경화되어, 탈형된 후 충분한 곡률을 형성하였다. 작동 성능 실험에서, LIPCA는 기존 THUNDER보다 작동변위가 향상됨을 보였다.

탄소나노튜브 구조를 이용한 NEMS소자의 비선형 동역학 (Nonlinear Dynamics of Carbon Nanotube-Based Nanoelectromechanical Device)

  • A carbon nanotube-based nanoelectromechanical device in resonance is examined theoretically. Mechanical deflections are electrically induced and resonantly excited at the fundamental frequency in cantilevered carbon nanotube. The electrically conducting elastic beam with van der Waals interactions at the tip is used for the modeling of the carbon nanotube device. Due to the elastic, electrical, and van der Waals interactions, the total energy of the system shows the unsymmetric two-well potentials. The predictions can be made that the device exhibits its nonlinear dynamic features in the two-well potentials. Also it is predicted that the fundamental frequency of the carbon nanotube device was changed by the nonlinear interactions induced by electrical and van der Waals potentials between carbon nanotube and ground surface of the device.

  • The severe shortage of the available sites in the highly developed downtown area in Korea necessitates the construction of high-rise buildings which meet the need of residence and commercial activity simultaneously. The objective of this study is to investigate the seismic performance of this type of building structures. For this purpose, two 1:12 scale 17-story reinforced concrete model structures were constructed according to the similitude law, in which the upper 15 stories have a bearing-wall system while the lower 2-story frames with infilled shear wall have two different layouts of the plan : The one has symmetric plan and the other has unsymmetric plan. Then, this model was subjected to a series of earthquake excitations. The test results show that the layout of shear wall has the negligible effect on the natural period and the base shear coefficient, but great effect on the failure mode of beam-column joint at flexible side frame.

  • Axial fans are widely used in heavy machines due to their ability to produce high flow rate for cooling of engines. At the same time, the noise generated by these fans causes one of the most serious problems. This work is concerned with the low noise technique of discrete frequency noise. To calculate the unsteady resultant force over the fan blade in an unsymmetric engine room. Time-Marching Free-Wake Method is used. From the calculations of unsteady force on fan blades, noise signal of an engine cooling fan is calculated by using an acoustic similarity law. Noise optimization is obtained from Neural Network which is constructed based on the calculated flow rate and noise spectrum.

Mechanical behavior and buckling failure of sharp-notched circular tubes under cyclic bending

  • In this paper, an experimental investigation of the mechanical behavior and buckling failure of sharp-notched circular tubes subjected to cyclic bending is discussed. The unnotched and sharp-notched circular tubes of SUS 304 stainless steel were tested under symmetric curvature-controlled cyclic bending. It was found from moment-curvature curves that the loops show cyclic hardening and gradually steady after a few cycles for all tested tubes. The ovalization-curvature curves show an unsymmetric, ratcheting and increasing manner with the number of cycles. In addition, it was found that six almost parallel lines corresponding to unnotched and five different notch-depth (0.2, 0.4, 0.6, 0.8 and 1.0 mm) tubes were noted from the experimental relationship between the cyclic controlled curvature and the number of cycles necessary to produce buckling on a log-log scale. An empirical formulation was proposed so that it could be used for simulating the aforementioned relationship. By comparing with the experimental finding, the simulation was in good agreement with the experimental data.

대형 산업설비 안전성 진단용 이동로봇 시스템 설계 (Design of a Mobile Robot System for Integrity Evaluation of Large Sized Industrial Facilities)

  • A mobile robot system utilizing NDT (Non-Destructive Testing) method is designed and fabricated f3r automatic integrity evaluation of large sized industrial reservoirs and pipelines. The developed mobile robot can crawl over the outer surface of the industrial facilities even though the shape of the structures is various and unsymmetric. The robot detects defects such as pinholes, cracks and thickness reduction at the wall of the facilities using EMAT (Electro-Magnetic Acoustic Transducer). Image processing technology for weld line detection at the surface of the target and host programs including defect detecting algorithms are also developed. Automation of defect detection for these kinds of large facilities using mobile robots is helpful to prevent significant troubles of the structures without danger of human beings under harmful environment.

메탄/공기 예혼합화염에서 CARS를 이용한 CO 농도 및 온도측정과 수치해석 결과의 비교 (Comparison of CARS CO and Temperature Measurements with Numerical Calculation for Methane/Air Premixed Flames)

  • Recently developed technique of measuring minor species concentration by using the modulation dip in broadband CARS has been applied to the flame structure study of methane/air premixed flames in a counterflow. This method used the modulation dip from the cold band CO Q-branch resonant signal superimposed on the nonresonant background. The measured CO concentration profile in a symmetric and unsymmetric methane/air premixed flames together with the velocity and temperature by using LDV and CARS have been compared with the numerical results adopting detailed chemistry modeling. The results show that there is a satisfactory agreement between the experimental data and numerical results for velocities, temperatures and CO concentrations. And the modulation dip technique of measuring minor species, such as CO is a viable tool for a quantitative measurement in a flame.

  • Most of the past experimental or analytical studies were performed for the curved bend with a square cross-section. Velocity profiles and Reynolds stresses of the turbulence flow in the 270 degree bend with circular cross-section were measured by a hot-wire anemometer. The mean velocity of primary flowing direction effected by the downstream of bend in the entry region of the bend. The flow in the inner part of the bend slowed the distribution velocity relatively large and unsymmetric phenomenon. In the strong secondary flow occurred when the flow passed in the region of 45 degree to 90 degree. The secondary flow appeared very large value in the neighbor region of inner wall.

적층판의 원통형 굽힘에 대한 횡방향 전단병형 (Transverse Shear Deformation in the Cylindrical Bending of Laminated Plates)

  • This paper presents a new laminated plate theory for the cylindrical bending of laminated plated. The theory assumes that in plane displacements vary exponentially through plate thickness. Analytical solutions are derived for simply supported plates subjected to transverse loading. The accuracy of the present theory is examined for unsymmetric laminates, and the numerical results are compared with three-dimensional elasticity solutions of Pagano. The present theory predicts displacements and stresses for very thick plates very accurately. In particular, transverse shear stresses obtained form constitutive equations are predicted very accurately.
