The Impingement of a weak shock wave discharged from the open end of a shock tube upon a flat plate was investigated using shock tube experiments and numerical simulations. Harten-Yee Total Variation Diminishing method was used to solve axisymmetric, unsteady, compressible flow governing equations. Experiments were carried out to validate the present computations. The effects of the flat plate and baffle plate sizes on the impinging flow field over the flat plate were investigated. Shock Mach number was vaned in the range from 1.05 to 1.20. The distance between the plate and shock tube was changed to investigate the effect on the peak pressure. From both the results of experiments and computations we obtained a good empirical equation to predict the peak pressure on the flat plate.
The unsteady Couette flow of an electrically conducting, V1SCOUS, incompressible fluid bounded by two parallel non-conducting porous plates is studied with heat transfer taking the Hall effect into consideration. An external uniform magnetic field and a uniform suction and injection are applied perpendicular to the plates while the fluid motion is subjected to an exponential decaying pressure gradient. The two plates are kept at different but constant temperatures while the Joule and viscous dissipations are included in the energy equation. The effect of the ion slip and the uniform suction and injection on both the velocity and temperature distributions is examined.
Natural convection from a slightly inclined circular cylinders immersed in quiescent cold pure water was studied experimentally. The experiment was carried out for circular cylinders with uniform heat flux ranging from $100W/m^{2} to 800 W/m^{2}$ and inclined angle ranging from horizontal $({\phi}=0^{\circ}) to 15^{\circ}$. The flow fields around cylinder were visualized and heat transfer characteristics investigated by measuring the surface temperatures for each case. As the results, it is shown that flow patterns are changed consecutively through the sequence of steady state downflow, unsteady state flow and steady state upflow with increasing heat flux. At the same inclined angle, as heat flux increases, the average Nusselt number decreases and then increases. At the same heat flux, as inclined angle increases, the average Nusselt number decreases.
As computer capacity has been progressed continuously, the studies of the flow characteristics have been performing by the numerical methods actively. In this study, 3-dimensional unsteady incompressible Wavier-Stokes equation was solved by numerical method using the fractional step method with the fourth order compact pade' scheme to achieve high accuracy To validate the present code and algorithm, 3D flow-field around a cylinder was simulated. The drag coefficient and lift coefficient were computed and, then, compared with experiment. The present code will be tailored to LES simulation for more accurate turbulent flow analysis.
The mechanism of wind-induced ovalling vibrations of cylindrical shells is numerically investigated by using a vortex method. The subject of this paper is limited to a two-dimensional structure in the subcritical regime. The aerodynamic stability of the ovalling vibrations in the second to fourth circumferential modes is discussed, based on the results of a forced-vibration test. In the analysis, two modal configurations are considered; one is symmetric and the other is anti-symmetric with respect to a diameter parallel to the flow direction. The unsteady pressures acting on a vibrating cylinder are simulated and the work done by them for one cycle of a harmonic motion is computed. The effects of a splitter plate on the flow around the cylinder as well as on the aerodynamic stability of the ovalling vibrations are also discussed. The consideration on the mechanism of ovalling vibrations is verified by the results of a free-vibration test.
When a shock wave arrives at an open end of tube, an impulse wave is discharged from the tube exit and complicated flow is formed near tube exit. The flow field is influenced by the cross-sectional geometry of tube exit, such as circular, square, rectangular, trapezoid and etc. In the current study, three-dimensional propagation characteristics of impulse wave discharged from the tube exit with non-circular cross section are numerically investigated using a CFD method. Total variation diminishing (TVD) scheme is used to solve the three-dimensional, unsteady, compressible Euler equations. Computations are performed for the Mach numbers of the incident shock wave $M_{s}$ below 1.5. The results obtained show that the peak pressure of the impulse wave and propagation directivity depends on the cross-sectional geometry of tube exit and the Mach number of incident shock wave.
In this study, the problem of using the mixing index as a measure of the mixing performance for a certain flow field has been discussed. The flow model subjected to this study is the two-dimensional unsteady lid-driven cavity flow. The transport equation for the concentration within the cavity was solved by using the finite volume method where the convective terms are discretized with the central difference scheme. It was shown that both the concentration dispersion and the mixing index depend highly on the initial distribution of the concentration, and therefore the mixing index obtained from the concentration dispersion equation loses its universal applicability.
In this paper, some dominant aeroacoustic characteristics of fans used in appliances are reviewed. The numerical attempts to analyze tile aeroacoustic noise of fans are briefly reviewed for various fans. Axial fans for refrigerator, cross flow fans fer air-conditioner, sirocco fans and turbo fans are anal: zed. The unsteady flow field, which is essential data for aeroacoustic analysis, is calculated by commercial CFD code. Acoustic pressure is calculated by Ffowcs Williams and Hawkings equation and Lowson's equation. During the analysis, dominant noise sources are identified.
This paper provides the numerical results of a simulation of the flow around a propeller working beneath the free surface. A finite volume method is used to solve the unsteady Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes (URANS) equations, where the wave-making problem is solved using a volume-of-fluid (VOF) method. The numerical analysis focuses on the propeller wake structure affected by the free surface, where we consider another free surface boundary condition that treats the free surface as a rigid wall surface. The propeller wake under the effect of these two free surface conditions shows a reduction in the magnitude of the longitudinal and vertical flow velocities, and its vortical structures strongly interact with the free surface. The thrust and torque coefficient under the free surface effect decrease about 3.7% and 3.1%, respectively. Finally, the present numerical results show a reasonable agreement with the available experimental data.
