  • A new efficient numerical method for computing unsteady, incompressible flows, DRANS (Decoupled Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes), is presented. To eliminate the restriction of CFL condition, a fully-implicit time advancement in which the Crank-Nicolson method is used fer both the diffusion and convection terms. is adopted. Based on decomposition method, the velocity-turbulent quantity decoupling is achieved. The additional decoupling of the intermediate velocity components in the convection term is made for the fully-implicit time advancement scheme. Since the iterative procedures for the momentum, ${\kappa}\;and\;{\varepsilon}$ equations are not required, the components decouplings bring fourth the reduction of computational cost. The second-order accuracy in time of the present numerical algorithm is ascertained by computing decaying vortices. The present decoupling method is applied to turbulent boundary layer with local forcing.

  • This paper provides the numerical results of a simulation of the flow around a propeller working beneath the free surface. A finite volume method is used to solve the unsteady Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes (URANS) equations, where the wave-making problem is solved using a volume-of-fluid (VOF) method. The numerical analysis focuses on the propeller wake structure affected by the free surface, where we consider another free surface boundary condition that treats the free surface as a rigid wall surface. The propeller wake under the effect of these two free surface conditions shows a reduction in the magnitude of the longitudinal and vertical flow velocities, and its vortical structures strongly interact with the free surface. The thrust and torque coefficient under the free surface effect decrease about 3.7% and 3.1%, respectively. Finally, the present numerical results show a reasonable agreement with the available experimental data.

  • A Large Eddy Simulation (LES) of the flow in an inducer is carried out under flow rate oscillations. The present study focuses on the dynamic response of the backflow and the unsteady pressure performance to the flow rate fluctuations under non-cavitation conditions. The amplitude of angular momentum fluctuation evaluated by LES is larger than that evaluated by RANS. However, the phase delay of backflow is nearly the same as RANS calculation. The pressure performance curve exhibits a closed curve caused by the inertia effect associated with the flow rate fluctuations. Compared with simplified one dimensional evaluation of the inertia component, the component obtained by LES is smaller. The negative slope of averaged performance curve becomes larger under unsteady conditions. From the conservations of angular momentum and energy, an expression useful for the evaluation of unsteady pressure rise was obtained. The examination of each term of this expression show that the apparent decrease of inertia effects is caused by the response delay of Euler's head and that the increase of negative slope is caused by the delay of inertial term associated with the delay of backflow response. These results are qualitatively confirmed by experiments.

  • The finite volume based multi-block RANS code, WAVIS developed at MOERI is applied to the numerical self-propulsion test. WAVIS uses the cell-centered finite volume method for discretization of the governing equations. The realizable $k-{\epsilon}$ turbulence model with a wall function is employed for the turbulence closure. The free surface is captured with the two-phase level set method and body forces are used to model the effects of a propeller without resolving the detail blade flow. The propeller forces are obtained using an unsteady lifting surface method based on potential flow theory. The numerical procedure followed the self-propulsion model experiment based on the 1978 ITTC performance prediction method. The self-propulsion point is obtained iteratively through balancing the propeller thrust, the ship hull resistance and towing force that is correction for Reynolds number difference between the model and full scale. The unsteady lifting surface code is also iterated until the propeller induced velocity is converged in order to obtain the propeller force. The self-propulsion characteristics such as thrust deduction, wake fraction, propeller efficiency, and hull efficiency are compared with the experimental data of the practical container ship. The present paper shows that hybrid RANS and potential flow based numerical method is promising to predict the self-propulsion parameters of practical ships as a useful tool for the hull form and propeller design.

  • Large eddy simulation{LES) methodology used to model a bluff-body stabilized non-reacting flow. The LES solver was implemented on parallel computer consisting 16 processors. To verify the capability of LES code, the results was compared with that of Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes(RANS) using $k-{\epsilon}$ model as well as experimental data. The results showed that the LES and RANS qualitatively well predicted the experimental results, such as mean axial, radial velocities and turbulent kinetic energy. However, in the quantitative analysis, the LES showed a better prediction performance than RANS. Specially, the LES well described characteristics of the recirculation zones, such as air stagnation point and jet stagnation point. Finally, the unsteady phenomena on the Bluff-body, such as the transition of recirculation region and vorticity, was examined with LES methodology.

  • Large eddy simulation(LES) methodology used to model isothermal non-swirling and swirling flows in a model gas turbine combustor. The LES solver was implemented on parallel computer consisting 16 processors. To verify the capability of LES code and characterize swirling flow, the results was compared with that of Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes(RANS) using k -$\epsilon$ model as well as experimental data. The results showed that the LES and RANS well predicted the mean velocity field of a non-swirling flow. Specially, the LES showed a very excellent prediction performance for the corner recirculation zone. In swirling flow, comparing with the results obtained by RANS, LES showed a better performance in predicting the mean axial and azimuthal velocities, and the central recirculation zone. Finally, unsteady phenomena of turbulent flow was examined with LES methodology.

  • No-load speed is an important performance factor for the safe operation of hydropower systems. In turbine design, the manufacturers must conduct several model tests to calculate the accurate value of no-load speed for the complete range of operating conditions, which are expensive and time-consuming. The present study presents steady and unsteady methods for calculating no-load speed of a Francis turbine. The steady simulations are implemented using a commercial flow solver and an iterative algorithm that relies on a smooth relation between turbine torque and speed factor. The unsteady method uses unsteady RANS simulations that have been integrated with a user subroutine to compute and return the value of runner speed, time step and friction torque. The main goal of this research is to evaluate and compare the two methods by calculating turbine dynamic parameters for three test cases consisting of high and medium head Francis turbines. Overall, the numerical results agreed well with experimental data. The unsteady method provided more accurate results in the opening angle range from 20 to 26 degrees. Nevertheless, the steady results showed more consistency than unsteady results for the three different test cases at different operating conditions.

  • Computational Wind Engineering has rapidly grown in the last decades and it is currently reaching a relatively mature state. The prediction of wind loading by means of numerical simulations has been proved effective in many research studies and applications to design practice are rapidly spreading. Despite such success, caution in the use of simulations for wind loading assessment is still advisable and, indeed, required. The computational burden and the know-how needed to run high-fidelity simulations is often unavailable and the possibility to use simplified models extremely attractive. In this paper, the applicability of some well-known 2D unsteady RANS models, particularly the k-ω SST, in the aerodynamic characterization of extruded bodies with bluff sections is investigated. The main focus of this paper is on the drag coefficient prediction. The topic is not new, but, in the authors' opinion, worth a careful revisitation. In fact, despite their great technical relevance, a systematic study focussing on sections which manifest a fully detached flow configuration has been overlooked. It is here shown that the considered 2D RANS exhibit a pathological behaviour, failing to reproduce the transition between reattached and fully detached flow regime.
