Exploring Factors Influencing Smoking Behaviour in Malaysia

  • Objective: The objective of present study is to investigate the determinants of smoking behaviour among adults in Malaysia. Method: Findings of the Third National Health and Morbidity Survey (NHMS-3) by the Ministry of Health, Malaysia, were used. The sample consisted of 34,539 observations. A logistic regression model was thus applied to estimate the probability to participate in smoking. Results: Age, income, gender, marital status, ethnicity, employment status, residential area, education, lifestyle and health status were statistically significant in affecting the likelihood of smoking. Specifically, youngsters, low income earners, males, unmarried individuals, Malays, employed individuals, rural residents and primary educated individuals were more likely to smoke. Conclusion: In conclusion, socio-demographic, lifestyle and health factors have significant impacts on smoking participation in Malaysia. Based on these empirical findings, several policy implications are suggested.

Impact of socio-demographic factors, lifestyle and health status on nutritional status among the elderly in Taiwan

  • BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Aging is an imperative problem for many countries in this century, and presents several challenges for the maintenance of good nutritional status. This study aims to assess the impact of socio-demographic factors, lifestyle and health status on the nutritional status among the elderly in Taiwan. SUBJECTS/METHODS: A cross-sectional study was carried out in Taiwan. Data were obtained from the Mei Jau Health Management Institution, which is a private health evaluation provider with multiple health screening centers in Taiwan and Asia. This study included 7947 adults aged 65 years or above. The data were extracted between 2001 to 2010. Nutritional status was assessed using anthropometric data, biochemical data and dietary intake information. RESULTS: Among the 7947 participants with mean age of 70.1 (SD = 4.5) years, 20.2%, 6.6%, 10.5% and 52.5% experienced underweight, protein malnutrition, anemia and inadequate dietary intake in the past month, respectively. Age was negatively correlated with body weight (r = -0.19, P = 0.02), body mass index (r = -0.41, P < 0.001), albumin level (r = -0.93, P < 0.001) and hemoglobin level (r = -0.30, P = 0.008). Age above 70 years, gender, unmarried status, retirement, lack of education, low family income, smoking, alcohol drinking, sleep duration of 6-8 hours, vegetarian diet, multiple medications, comorbidity and dysphagia were positively associated with malnutrition in older adults. CONCLUSIONS: Underweight and inadequate dietary intake are prevalent among the elderly in Taiwan. Vegetarian diet, multiple medications, comorbidity, dysphagia and lifestyle factors such as smoking, alcohol drinking and sleep duration of 6-8 hours are risk factors for undernutrition in older adults.

지역 주민의 음주행태 및 관련요인 (Drinking Behavior and Related Factors of Community Residents)

  • Objectives: To investigate the drinking behavior and related factors of community residents in G city. Methods: Examination was executed with questionnaire to 1973 adults. Data were collected from October 1, 2005 to November 16, 2005. Drinking behavior involves rate of drinking, frequency of drinking, age of starting drinking, drinking amount, rate of attempts to drink moderately and reasons for reducing drinking. Related factors involves the general characteristics, the habits of health behaviors. This was analyzed with frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, x2-test, t-test, ANOVA and logistic regression. Results: The drinking rate of the respondents was 67.4%, that rate of male was 83.1%, while that rate of female was 52.5%. The drinking rate was higher in groups of younger aged and highly educated people than that rate of the other groups. The highest level of drinking frequency was ones or twice a week. The drinking frequency of those who drank more than three times weekly was higher in the groups of male, old aged, married people, low educated people, rural residents, farmers or fisherman or laborers and those who unemployed or who did not exercise frequently and control their body weight. These individuals also preferred salty food and meat and fish, dined out frequently, did not visit dental clinic regularly, and tend to be smokers. The mean of the age of starting drinking was 21.17 year-old, that of males was 19.94 year-old, that of females was 22.82 year-old. The mean of the age of starting drinking was lower in groups of male, young aged, unmarried, college educated, rural residents, clerks, high monthly income, healthy and no illness, and smokers than that of the other group. The average of the drinking amount was 5.77 pack, that of males was 7.41 pack, and that of females was 3.31 pack. The drinking amount is much more in groups of males, fifties, unmarried, college educated, rural residents, self-employed, healthy people, and smoker than the other. 33.4% of the respondents attempted to drink moderately. According to the reasons of trying to drink moderately, the rate of prevention illness was highest. Conclusions: The variables of influencing drinking were sex, marital status, education, smoking, monthly income, health status, and stress.

Prevalence and Correlates of Physical Activity and Sitting Time in Cancer Survivors: 2009-2013 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey

  • Objectives: A physically active lifestyle is important for cancer survivors. Therefore, this study was conducted to 1) provide population-based estimates of the prevalence of physical activity and sitting time, and 2) their correlates in Korean cancer survivors. Materials and Methods: This study analyzed a cancer survivor subsample (N=1,482) from 2008-2013 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES), data selected with a complex sampling design. Overall and subgroup-specific prevalences of physical activity and sitting time were estimated. Correlates of moderate- to vigorous-intensity physical activity ( MVPA) and sitting time were tested using age-group-specific hierarchical multiple regression models. Results: Overall adherence rate to physical activity guidelines was 34.9% (95% CI=31.5-38.4). Age-group-specific adherence rates were 41.1% (95% CI=36.3-45.9) in adults (30-64 years old), and 25.3% (95% CI=21.0-25.3) in older adults (65 years or older). Adults spent 213.33 minutes (95% CI=172.4-254.3) per week on MVPA and 55.3 minutes (95% CI=36.4-64.6) on sitting time per day. In adults, sitting time was significantly associated with employed status (B=28.0, p=0.046), smoking (B=-47.4, p=0.020), and number of comorbidity conditions (B=-13, p=.037). MVPA was significantly associated with marital status (B=134.9, p<0.001), employment status (B=98.12, p=.046), and years since cancer diagnosis (B=104.7, p=0.015). Older adults spent 162.2 minutes (95% CI=119.5-204.8) per week on MVPA and 63.0 minutes (95% CI=45.0-89.5) on sitting time per day. Their significant correlates were sex (B= -45.2, p=0.014), smoking (B=-70.14, p<0.001), and years since cancer diagnosis (B=37.0, p=0.024). Age (B=5.8, p=0.042) and marital status (B=83.8, p=0.033) were also significantly associated with MVPA in older adults. Conclusion: A majority of Korean cancer survivors do not sufficiently participate in physical activity. In general, older, unhealthier, non-working, and being unmarried were risk factors for physical inactivity. While this study informs public health policy makers and practitioners about physical activity intervention demand for cancer survivors, future investigations should address psychosocial mediators to better inform intervention programs.

COVID-19가 개인의 우울과 삶의 질에 미치는 영향: 연령대별 차이 중심으로 (Impact of COVID-19 on Individual Depression and Quality of Life: Focusing on Differences by Age Group)

  • 목적 : 전 세계적으로 대유행중인 Coronavirus disease 19(COVID-19)로 인해 장기적이고 강도 높은 사회적 거리두기와 외출 자제가 개인의 정신적 건강 측면에 부정적인 영향을 미치게 되었고, 이는 개인의 우울 수준을 높이고 삶의 질을 저하하는 악영향을 초래하게 되었다. 이에 본 연구는 COVID-19가 우울과 삶의 질에 미치는 영향을 파악하고자 하였다. 연구방법 : 전국 20대부터 60대의 성인 270명을 대상으로 2020년 11월부터 12월까지 약 2개월에 걸쳐 온라인 설문조사를 실시하여 내용을 분석하였다. 결과 : 우울감의 증가와 삶의 질 저하에서 모두 유의한 차이가 있었다(p<.001). 대상자의 연령 중 50대가 가장 우울감의 변화가 크게 나타났고(p<.05), 한국판 역학 연구센터 우울 척도점수는 30대가 37점으로 가장 높았고 20대, 50대, 40대, 60대 순이었다. 삶의 질에서는 전 연령대에서 유의한 변화가 나타났다(p<.001). 연구에 참여한 대상자의 특성 중 결혼상태에서 COVID-19 이후 미혼인 사람이 기혼인 사람보다 더 큰 우울감을 보였다(p<.012). 삶의 질에서는 미혼보다 기혼인 사람과(p<.001) 가족구성원이 없는 사람보다 4명인 사람의 삶의 질이 더 큰 것으로 나타났다(p<.031). 결론 : 연구를 통해 COVID-19 이후 성인의 우울감이 증가되었고 삶의 질이 떨어진 것을 확인하였으며 아직 대유행중인 COVID-19가 사회에 미치는 영향은 지속적으로 변화하고 있으므로 추후 우울감과 삶의 질의 변화에 대한 연구는 업데이트 될 필요가 있다.

기독청년을 위한 성교육 집단상담 프로그램 개발과 효과 (Development and Effect of Sexuality Education Group Counseling Program for Christian Young Adults)

  • 본 연구의 목적은 기독청년들을 대상으로 성교육 집단상담 프로그램을 개발하여 그 효과를 검증하는데 있다. 경남 C시에 소재하는 C교회와 S교회에 출석하는 20~35세 미혼 기독청년 30명을 대상으로 실험집단 15명에게 주 1회, 회당 120분, 총 12회기의 프로그램을 실시하였으며, 통제집단 15명은 어떠한 처치도 하지 않았다. 프로그램은 크랩의 성경적 상담모델과 맥민의 인지치료를 기초하여 인지치료기술 12가지를 활용하여 구성하였으며, 효과 검증을 위하여 전경숙과 이효영 그리고 이선자의 성지식 척도와 호선민의 성태도 척도 그리고 선미경이 개발한 성적의사결정 척도를 사용하였다. 자료분석은 척도의 신뢰도 검사(Cronbach's α 검사), χ2-test, Mann-Whitney U test 그리고 Friedman 검정 및 Wilcoxon signed-rank test를 실시하였다. 연구 결과는 기독청년들의 성지식이 증가하였고 보수적인 성태도가 나타났으며, 성적의사결정 능력이 향상되어 프로그램이 효과가 있는 것으로 나타났다. 이는 본 연구가 기독청년들에게 성적존재로서의 진정한 의미를 성경에서 인지하도록 하여 창조의 목적과 질서를 따라 살 때 자신과 이웃 그리고 하나님과의 관계 회복을 누리며 건강한 생활을 하도록 도움을 주는 교회 내 프로그램임을 시사한다.

일반적 특성, 생활습관과 영양소 섭취가 성인의 비만, 혈청지질 및 C-반응성 단백에 미치는 영향 (The Effects of General Characteristics, Lifestyle and Nutrients on Obesity, Serum Lipids and C-Reactive Protein for Adults)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify predictors of obesity, serum lipids and CRP in Korean adults. The predictors of obesity and serum lipids were the subject's general characteristics, life style, eating habit and nutrients. The predictors of CRP were the subject's general characteristics, life style, eating habit, nutrients, obesity and serum lipids. Method: 115 subjects who had visited the health examination center at a hospital participated in the study. The data analysed with descriptive analysis, ANOVA, Chi-square test, Pearson correlation coefficient and multiple regression. Result: Sex, married, eating out ($4{\leq}$/w), eating out (2-3/w) and age ($61{\leq}$) were anticipated variable on BMI ($R^2$=0.488). Sex and overeating (2-3/w) were anticipated variable on body fat($R^2$=0.218). Drink (4-6/w), age (51-60), sex, vegetable fat and Systolic BP were anticipated variable on total cholesterol ($R^2$=0.217). Age (51-60), vegetable fat and unmarried were anticipated variable on LDL ($R^2$=0.180). Sex was anticipated variable on HDL and Triglyceride ($R^2$=0.054, 0.192). Breakfast (1-3/w) and meal (2/d) were anticipated variable on CRP ($R^2$=0.1268). Conclusion: It is thought that decreasing eating out and overeating might be important to prevent obesity. It is thought that decreasing drinking and fat eating might be important to improve serum lipids. It is thought that eating breakfast might be important to decrease CRP.

Association between depression and eating behavior factors in Korean adults: the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2018

  • Purpose: This study aimed to examine the association between depression and eating behavior factors in Korean adults. Methods: Study subjects were selected (n = 5,103) from the participants of the 7th Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2018 and divided into depression (men, 59; women, 162) and normal groups (men, 2,083; women, 2,799). Subjects with a Patient Health Questionnaire 9 score ≥ 10 (out of 27 points) were defined as having depression. Results: A higher prevalence of depression was observed in both men and women who were unemployed (p < 0.001, p = 0.008), had lower income (both p < 0.001), poorer subjective health (both p < 0.001), and poor food safety (both p < 0.001). The prevalence of depression was higher in women with lower education levels (p = 0.008), who were unmarried (p = 0.010), smokers (p < 0.001), and in a one-person household (p = 0.001). Obese men showed a higher prevalence of depression (p = 0.009). Men who were eating alone or skipping lunch had a high prevalence of depression (p = 0.009), while women who were eating breakfast (p = 0.012), lunch (p = 0.001), and dinner (p = 0.010) alone had a high prevalence of depression. The relationship analysis between men and women according to dietary habits using logistic regression showed that, in women, after variable adjustment, skipping lunch (odds ratio [OR], 2.677; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.090-6.574), meal frequency of 2 times per day (OR, 1.658; 95% CI, 1.084-2.536), and lunch frequency of 3-4 times per week (OR, 3.143; 95% CI, 1.725-5.728) were significantly associated with a higher prevalence of depression. Conclusion: Depression in women was not only affected by more sociodemographic variables but also associated with decreased frequency of lunch and dinner, especially with skipping lunch.

일반인의 청력이 삶의 질에 미치는 영향 (The Influence of Hearing Ability of Ordinary People on the Quality of Life)

  • Background: In this research, we conducted an analysis to grasp the relationship between hearing and quality of life and to prepare effective troubleshooting. Methods: In this study, we analyzed using the data of the 6th term of the National Health and Nutrition Survey of the Disease Management Headquarters. And, out of 7,380 people, 3,598 adults over the age of 40 years who participated in the hearing test were selected as final research subjects and analyzed. Results: It was confirmed that the result of the analysis affects the quality of life based on hearing. The quality of life associated with hearing loss was unpleasant, motor ability, anxiety/depression, and everyday life affected in order of self management. And factors having an effect on the quality of life of the study subjects were found to be gender, elderly, unmarried, low hearing, low household income, absence of economic activity, and low teaching standards. Conclusion: The conclusion is that strengthening education for realistic management and prevention rather than treatment for unconditional hearing impairment will overcome low self esteem and loneliness and alleviate any uncomfortable life that people with hearing loss give. It is expected to be possible.

식품의 영양표시제도 정착을 위한 기초조사(I): 소비자 인식 연구 (A Basic Research for the Adoption and Implementation of Nutrition Labeling: With a Reference to the Consumer Awareness)

  • Consumer awareness of current food labeling system and new nutrition labeling system which the government considers to adopt widely was assessed, from May to June in 1994, for 423 adults living in Seoul. Being highly conscious of food safety, they thought the current food label did not provide sufficient information. Dissatisfaction with the current system was shown higher in the female, young, or unmarried strata. The need for nutrition labeling system was widely recognized by 82% of total respondents regardless of sex, level of education, monthly income, and marital status. Although some expressed worries about proper management of the system, most of the respondents answered that the system would benefit them after all. In this connection, 59% of the respondents showed willingness to accept a price increase to be entailed by nutrition labeling. Nutrition informations that, they thought, should be covered were: calorie>minerals>cholesterol>protein>vitamins>fat>sodium. Additional labeling informations they called for were nutrient contents>RDA percentage>specific statement on reinforced or eliminated nutrients.
