참고봉사의 이념과 기준설정을 위한 고찰 -미국에서의 이론과 전개과정을 중심으로- (On the Ideology and the Standard of Reference Service)

  • This study has two aims. one is to devide the ideology of reference service into three groups such as conservative, moderative, and progressive theories, and then investigate the validity of each theory as well as any problems to be suggested. The other is to establish appropriate standards of reference service according to the types of libraries and users, based on the analysis of such theories. Each theory has its own merits and demerits. Accordingly, it seems to be difficult to apply uniformly and theory into users who have different types of question and educational levels. And also it is difficult to apply into various libraries which have different aims of establishment, characteristics, and the users of each library. Consequently, it is suggested to set up a norm of reference service according to the types of libraries and users respectively. The conservative theory is applicable to small and medium sized public libraries, school libraries, and college and university libraries of which the users are mainly students and citizens. The progressive theory is desirable for special and academic libraries as well as large public libraries where the users are mainly specialists. and scholars.

한국군 교육기관 도서관의 특징에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Characteristics of Military Educational Institutions Libraries in Korea)

  • This paper examines the characteristics of 23 libraries affiliated with educational institutions of the Korean miltary. Materials and data used in this analysis were obtained from a variety of statute books, Korean Library Association publications, past works in military-related research, questionnaires and interviews with library staff. For each military educational institutions, the background to its foundation and Its current operations are briefly reviewed. Library characteristics subjected to analysis pertain to the following 8 areas: location and architecture, stack arrangement, furniture and furnishings, personnel, service elements, budget, book stock, and extent of computerization. The affiliated library (consisting of reading rooms and/or stack rooms) is then classified as belonging to one of the following three levels: graduate-school level (total of 4 libraries), university level (5 libraries), and technical-school level (14 libraries). When necessary. particular libraries are examined in detail. This research reveals that while most graduate-school and university level libraries are being operated on a relatively sound basis, there are significant disparities among university level libraries. As for technical-school level libraries, the lack of professional staff and service elements for users is seriously impairing their operations. In order to address these problems and support military education and research in the age of segyehwa and information, it is suggested that the Korean military formulate comprehensive measures to modernize library facilities and improve their operations.

전문도서관의 정보자원 공동활용에 관한 연구 (A Study on Resource Sharing in Korean Special Libraries)

  • 전문도서관은 특정주제 분야의 장서를 집중적으로 수집하는 수서정책을 시행하고 있으므로 핵심 연속간행물은 구독을 계속하고 거의 이용이 되지 않는 연속간행물은 구독을 취소하며 취소한 연속간행물의 원문요구에 대해서는 원문제공 서비스를 활용하는 것이 바람직하다. 국내의 전문도서관이 원문제공 서비스를 추진하는 방법 가운데 영역별 도서관협의회 가입은 보편적이면서도 적절한 방법인 것으로 보인다. 전통적으로 타관종과 전문도서관의 상호협력보다는 전문도서관간의 상호협력이 보다 활발했기 때문이며 아울러 공동활용의 성패에 영향을 주는 공동수서까지도 원만하게 추진할 수 있는 여건을 조성해주기 때문이다.

대학도서관의 연구지원서비스에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Research Support Service of College Libraries)

  • 이 연구에서는 대학도서관의 연구지원서비스를 정의하고, 국내외 주요 대학도서관에서 제공하는 연구지원서비스를 비교 분석하였다. 분석 결과, 국내 대학도서관은 일반적으로 온라인상에서 도서관 서비스제공 빈도가 상대적으로 저조하였다. 또한 상대적으로 국외대학도서관에서 제공하는 연구지원 전문서비스보다는 서지교육과 원문제공서비스, 상호대차서비스 등과 같은 일반적인 도서관 서비스만을 제공하였다. 또한 연구윤리 관련 정보서비스가 상대적으로 부족하였다. 그리고 연구단계별 연구지원서비스는 자료수집단계에 집중된 경향이 있으며, 그 외 연구계획단계와 논문작성단계의 서비스는 미흡한 것으로 나타났다. 미국 대학도서관은 대학 소속 연구자와 학자 간의 커뮤니케이션을 위한 공간을 도서관 홈페이지를 통해 제공하고 있었다.

정보환경의 변화와 대학도서관의 발전방향 (Changing information environment and academic libraries)

  • Information technology will inevitably and profoundly alter every aspect of university life. New information technologies are creating new patterns in the research and teaching, with networks enhancing information sharing and data transmission. The revolution in information technology requires that universities integrate information technology with their traditional missions of teaching, research, and public service. Enhanced mode of information access and changing information-seeking behaviors suggest the need for new library services. New technologies have opened up many new services options for libraries. The nature of and potential for new information services suggest that libraries should become better connected with other campus units. Some of these issues will no doubt be addressed by the a n.0, pplication of new technologies and by building campus information infrastructure. An important element of the needed change for enhancing the library information services is the integration of the libraries and computing centers. Libraries and computing centers deal with the same commodity-information and delivering information. For the sake of scholarship and research, the two must devise an integrated a n.0, pproach to delivering the common commodity. Computing centers have special skills in system development and telecommunications. Libraries have good human interface skills and skills for organizing knowledge. Together they could be a particularly productive team. Noting this, some universities have created new information service units which unify the present-day computing, library and telecommunication functions. Existing models range from true merging to situations where some cooperative activities are being conducted. The purpose of this study is to suggest the direction in developing of information services in academic libraries by examining the changing information environment and trends of integrating libraries and computing centers. This paper inquires into the changing information environment, the impact of imformation technology on universities and libraries, some casses of integration of academic libraries and computing centers, and effects of integration of two and suggests the developing direction of information services in academic libraries.

대학도서관의 규모별 주제전문사서체제 도입방안에 관한 연구 (A Study on How to Introduce Subject-Oriented Service to University Libraries Based on Their Size in Korea)

  • 대학도서관은 기능별 조직과 주제별 조직으로 운영될 수 있으며, 주제별 조직에 대한 수요가 더 높게 나타나고 있다는 것은 선행 수요조사 연구들을 통해서 밝혀지고 있다. 또한 주제별 운영체제의 경제성 및 효율성 검증 연구 등이 수행되고, 주제별 조직으로의 전환을 주장하는 연구가 많이 있으나 아직도 국내의 현황을 조사해 보면, 완전 주제형으로 주제전문서비스를 제공하고 있는 대학도서관은 거의 없는 것으로 분석되고 있다. 이에 본 연구에서는 여러 가지 도서관 환경의 제약, 그 중에서 특히 직원규모의 한계로 인하여 주제전문서비스 체제를 도입하고 있지 못하는 도서관의 실정을 감안하여 실질적인 도입 운영방안을 제시하고자 하였다. 이를 위해 주제전문사서의 역할을 정리하고, 주제전문서비스 성공사례를 분석하였으며, 국내 4년제 대학도서관의 사이트를 조사하여 규모별 대학도서관의 다양한 현황을 파악하였다.

대학도서관의 분류검색 운영 분석 (An Analysis on Classification Retrieval Operation in University Libraries)

  • 본 연구는 대학도서관의 단행본에 대한 분류검색 환경을 조사${\cdot}$분석함으로써, 그 실태를 파악하기 위한 것이다. 조사내용은 분류검색 제공여부, 접근방법, 검색수준 등에 중점을 두었다. 데이터 수집은 계통추출법에 의해 표집된 100개 도서관 중, 조사기간 동안 URL 연결이 가능한 97개 도서관을 대상으로 이루어졌다. 그 결과, 97개 도서관 중, $92.8\%$가 분류검색을 제공하고 있었으나, 이중 $52.2\%$가 분류기호만을 통해, $47.8\%$가 분류기호와 분류 디렉터리를 통해 접근이 가능한 것으로 나타났다. 따라서, 분류검색을 활성화하기 위해서는 분류기호만을 통해 접근이 가능한 도서관에 대한 검색환경 개선이 시급한 것으로 파악되었다.

대학도서관 정보사서의 정보서비스 효율성 평가 (An Evaluation for Effectiveness of Information Services by Reference Librarians at College and University Libraries in Korea)

  • The objective of this study is to search for a theoretical and practical solution to the question of what is the most effective and qualitative method of information service for the college and university libraries in Korea. Assuming the maximum service or total service theory in information services, therefore, it appears natural that the subject specialist who is highly knowledgeable in his subject is indispensable in raising the quality of information librarians. The procedure of this research was as follows: There was no college and university library employing any full-time subject spceialist in Korea. This research, however, was proceeded on the assumption that subject specialists are already employed in all of the college and university libraries after the subject specialist system is established. The least qualification of subject specialist is limited, based on the criteria given by the foreign literature, to those who have master's degree in Library Science and bachelor's degree in any other subject area, those who have bacholor's degree in Library Science and master's degree in any other subject area, or those who have both bacholor's and master's degrees in Library Science with minor in any subject field . To prove the research hypothesis that the subject specialist will perform his role more efficiently than the generalist in effectively providing information service based on both accuracy and speed, this research as an obtrusive testing method analyzed the effectiveness by presenting information questions to the generalists and subject specialists who are information librarians in college and university libraries. For this study 20 librarians working at 12 university libraries were tested for performance levels of information services. The result showed $59.75\%$ an absolute performance rate and $75.20\%$ an adjust performance rate. Compared to Thomas Childer's 1970 study in which he used the unobtrusive testing method, these results were $5\%$ higher in the absolute performance rate and $11.36\%$ higher in the adjust performance rate. In comparing the generalist with the subject specialist in efficiency of information service, while the absolute performance rate was $57.08\%$ and the adjust performance rate was $73.08\%$ in the case of the generalist, the absolute rate was $63.75\%$ and the adjust rate was $78.38\%$ in the case of specialist, therefore, the efficiency of the subject specialist was $6.67\%$ higher in the absolute performance rate and $5.30\%$ higher in the adjust performance rate than that of generalist. But the factor of speediness was excluded from the analysis because of the difference between the time the interviewers recorded and the time the interviewee recorded. On the basis of the result of this research, it should be desirable to educate subject specialists and employ them as information librarians and for them to function as efficient subject specialists in order to improve the effectiveness of information services, the nucleus of the raison d'etre of college and university libraries.

Evaluation Indicators for Green Libraries and Library Eco-friendliness

  • This study aimed to determine eco-friendly factors on the aspects of library service, materials provided or handled by the library, and programs including educational programs. Furthermore, it was setup to perform a trial evaluation for the eco-friendliness of the library based on the determined evaluation standards by this study. Results are as follows; First, regarding the question of 'Do employees of the library think that establishment of green libraries is necessary?', the employees of the libraries responded yes by 65.52%, but only 4.6% responded that it would not be necessary. Second, in analyzing the most important evaluation areas of green libraries according to the opinions of the libraries' employees, they were ranked in order: the indoor environment, energy and prevention of environmental pollution, and material and resource areas. Third, 11 areas were determined to evaluate the level of greening in the libraries; the highest averages were scored 510 for the area of energy and prevention of environmental pollution, 415 for the area of library resource, and 320 for the area of indoor environment. Last, the libraries were graded based on actual data according to the results to measure the level of greening, two libraries were graded as Diamond, the highest grade, accounting for 15.39% of all libraries; Gold and Silver grades accounted for another 15.39%, together five Certified graded libraries accounted for 38.46%, which was the highest rate among the libraries. Any library scoring less than 20% when compared to the full score was graded as Non-certified, and one library, which scored 15.06% fell into this category. The results of this study set up to serve as basic data for the direction of development for green libraries in our country, as well as reference for the employees of libraries in constructing or remodeling library buildings, establishing service infrastructure, providing information service, and planning library duties in an eco-friendly way.

대학도서관 정보봉사시스템 성과지표 개발과 적용에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Development and Application of Performance Indicators for the Information Service System at the Academic Libraries)

  • 본 연구에서는 대학도서관 정보봉사시스템의 성과를 측정하기 위하여 선행연구 문헌조사를 통하여 도서관 이용, 문헌자료 대출, 참고봉사 및 이용자교육, 전자서비스 등 4개 영역에 16개 성과측정을 위한 지표를 개발하고 이를 바탕으로 대규모, 중규모, 소규모 대학도서관을 각각 2개 기관씩 모두 6개 기관을 조사하였다. 조사된 결과를 바탕으로 지표의 의미와 활용 방안 및 정보봉사시스템의 성과 향상을 위한 방안을 제시하였다.
