  • In this paper, the tension of assembly stay cable connected with massive anchorage block was calculated through back analysis of in-situ frequencies measured from a stadium structure. Direct approach to back analysis is adopted using the univariate method among the direct search methods as an optimization technique. The univariate method can search the optimal tension without regard to the initial ones and has a rapid convergence rate. To verify the reliability of back analysis, Tension formulas proposed by Zui et al. and Shimada were used. Tensions estimated by three methods are compared with the design tension, and are in a reasonable agreement with an error of more or less than 15%. Therefore, it is shown that back analysis applied in this paper is appropriate for estimation of cable tension force.

  • The objectives of this study are to apply univariate search and genetic algorithm to tank model, and compare the two optimization methods. Hydrologic data of Baran watershed during 1996 and 1997 were used for correction the tank model, and the data of 1999 to 2000 were used for validation. RMSE and R2 were used for the tank model's optimization. Genetic algorithm showed better result than univariate search. Genetic algorithm converges to general optima, and more population of potential solution made better result. Univariate search was easy to apply and simple but had a problem of convergence to local optima, and the problem was not solved although search the solution more minutely. Therefore, this study recommend genetic algorithm to optimize tank model rather than univariate search.

  • This paper introduces a probabilistic analysis method in order to analyze the effect of manufacturing tolerance on induction motor performance occurring in massive production. The univariate dimension reduction method is adapted to predict probabilistic characteristics of a performance function due to certain probabilistic distributions of design variables. Moreover, the sensitivity information on mean and variance of the performance function is estimated, and then the effect of randomness of individual design variables on the probability performance function is analyzed. The effectiveness and accuracy of the method is investigated with a mathematical model and an induction motor.

  • A back analysis algorithm was developed to determine the major parameters for tunnel design; the elastic modulus(E) and the ratio of horizontal to vertical stress(K). The algorithm is based on direct search method and was coded by FISH language of FLAC, a commercial finite difference program. Developed code was applied on some models to verify the validity and estimate the efficiency of the algorithm. Verification by theoretical solutions and published results of Gens' research, was successful.

  • The power function in sample size determination has to be characterized by an appropriate statistical test for the hypothesis of interest. Nonparametric tests are suitable in the analysis of ordinal data or frequency data with ordered categories which appear frequently in the biomedical research literature. In this paper, we study sample size calculation methods for the Wilcoxon-Mann-Whitney test for one- and two-dimensional ordinal outcomes. While the sample size formula for the univariate outcome which is based on the variances of the test statistic under both null and alternative hypothesis perform well, this formula requires additional information on probability estimates that appear in the variance of the test statistic under alternative hypothesis, and the values of these probabilities are generally unknown. We study the advantages and disadvantages of different sample size formulas with simulations. Sample sizes are calculated for the two-dimensional ordinal outcomes of efficacy and safety, for which bivariate Wilcoxon-Mann-Whitney test is appropriate than the multivariate parametric test.

  • Response surface methodology (RSM) empirically studies the relationship between a response variable and input variables in the product or process development phase. The ultimate goal of RSM is to find an optimal condition of the input variables that optimizes (maximizes or minimizes) the response variable. RSM can be seen as a knowledge management tool in terms of creating and utilizing data, information, and knowledge about a product production and service operations. In the field of product or process development, most real-world problems often involve a simultaneous consideration of multiple response variables. This is called a multiple response surface (MRS) problem. Various approaches have been proposed for MRS optimization, which can be classified into loss function approach, priority-based approach, desirability function approach, process capability approach, and probability-based approach. In particular, the loss function approach is divided into univariate and multivariate approaches at large. This paper focuses on the univariate approach. The univariate approach first obtains the mean square error (MSE) for individual response variables. Then, it aggregates the MSE's into a single objective function. It is common to employ the weighted sum or the Tchebycheff metric for aggregation. Finally, it finds an optimal condition of the input variables that minimizes the objective function. When aggregating, the relative weights on the MSE's should be taken into account. However, there are few studies on how to determine the weights systematically. In this study, we propose an interactive procedure to determine the weights through considering a decision maker's preference. The proposed method is illustrated by the 'colloidal gas aphrons' problem, which is a typical MRS problem. We also discuss the extension of the proposed method to the weighted MSE (WMSE).

  • Fitting a mixture of multivariate skew normal distribution (MSNMix) with multiple skewness parameter vectors via EM algorithm often requires a highly expensive computational cost to calculate the moments and probabilities of multivariate truncated normal distribution in E-step. Subsequently, it is common to fit an asymmetric data set with MSNMix with a simple skewness parameter vector since it allows us to compute them in E-step in an univariate manner that guarantees a cheap computational cost. However, the adaptation of a simple skewness parameter is unrealistic in many situations. This paper proposes an approximate estimation for the MSNMix with multiple skewness parameter vectors that also allows us to treat them in an univariate manner. We additionally provide some experiments to show its effectiveness.

  • In general, the tension fores of hanger cable in suspension bridges play an important role in evaluating the bridge state. The vibration method, as a conventional one, has been widely applied to estimate the tension fores by using the measured frequencies on hanger cables. However, the vibration method is not applicable to short hanger cables because the frequency of short cables is severely sensitive to the flexural rigidity. Thus, in this study, the tension forces of short hanger cables, of which the length is shorter than 10meters, were estimated through back analysis of the cable frequencies measured from Gwang-An suspension bridge in Korea. Direct approach to rock analysis is adopted using the univariate method among the direct search methods as an optimization technique. The univariate method is able to search the optimal tension forces without regard to the initial ones and has a rapid convergence rate. To verify the feasibility of back analysis, the results from back analysis and vibration method are compared with the design tension forces. From the comparison, it can be inferred that back analysis results are more reasonable agreement with the design tension forces of short hanger cable. Therefore, it is concluded that back analysis applied in this study is an appropriate tool for estimating tension forces of short hanger cables.
