  • The author evaluated the nasal asymmetry after primary operations in the patients with unilateral cleft lip using full face photographs. The results are as follows : 1. Nasal deviation angle is average 2.98+3.01 degree(ranged from 0 to 10 degree), significantly different from control group(p<0.05). 2. Nasal deviation angle is average 5.1% when inter-medial canthal distance is 100%, significantly different from control group(p<0.05). 3. Difference in nostril size between cleft and noncleft side is 2.1% when inter-medial canthal distance is 100%, significantly different from control group(p<0.05). 4. Nasal attractiveness analysis shows higher points in difference in nostril size, nasal deviation, nasal form in that order. 5. Nasal asymmetry after primary operations in the patients with unilateral cleft lip using full face photographs is related with Nasal deviation angle, Nasal deviation distance and Difference in nostril size between cleft and noncleft side.

  • Unilateral bony ankylosis of temporomandibular joint is not extremely rare. Treatment in all cases should be surgical. Considerable difficulty has been encountered by surgeons in the judgment of the planning of the treatment for anklosis; either by gap arthroplasty or by interposition arthroplasty. A recent review of the literautre reveals that many authors reported more of the interposition arthroplasty treatment because of no recurrence and the excellent results obtained. This 22-year-old Korean female, who had suffered from unilateral temporomandibular joint recurrent anklosis, was received an operation of ramus osteotomy followed by interpositional arthroplasty with using of thin gold plate. She formerly was received condylectomy twice at the age of 8 and 9, under the diagnosis of unilateral bony ankylosis due to trauma. My experience with alloplasty in unilaterally recurrent ankylosed T-M joint is presented here for her general and oral functional condition proved to be satisfactory after 4 years follow-up.

  • A roentgeno cephalometric comparative study was undertaken to reveal significant differences of craniofacial morphology and growth between unilateral cleft lip and palate and normal individuals. The material for this study consisted 32 subjects with repaired unilateral cleft lip and palate (27 male, 5 female) and 44 normal subjects (22 male, 22 female). The analysis was performed by Coben's method and the measurements were compared by Student's t-test. The following conclusions were obtained. 1. In the UCLP subjects there is definite decrease in midfacial growth, so they showed concave profile. 2. The ramus inclination angle and AR-GO of UCLP subjects are larger than normal subjects. 3. The craniofacial height of UCLP subjects is smaller than normal subjects, especially in midface. 4. The lower part of craniofacial height of UCLP subjects is larger than normal subjects.

  • In this paper I address the problems of defining the semantics of numerals and accounting for how pragmatic inferences are made. I basically assume that a numeral n simply means '${\lambda}P{\lambda}x[#(x)n\;&\;P(x)]$', as commonly assumed. Even when a numeral n has 'at least' interpretation, a sentence with the number does not entail a sentence with n replaced with n-1. But when a sentence with n-1 holds, it is possible that a sentence with n or a larger number holds too. This is not based on a semantic relation, but on pragmatic informativeness. In addition to pragmatic strength, the actual reading of a numeral is affected by some background knowledge of generalizations about the world, but the ordering of pragmatic strength among numbers always plays a role in determining unilateral interpretations. In such a case, we can assume that a set of numbers relevant in the context forms a scale. Forming a scale does not necessarily lead to a unilateral interpretation. The bilateral interpretation of a number is possible in the context where it is known whether or not alternative sentences with contextually salient alternative numbers are true.

  • Splanchnic nerve block with neurolytics has been used to control the upper abdominal cancer pain. This gastric cancer case with severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease complained of upper abdominal pain, severe dyspnea and orthopnea. He maintained a sitting position most of the time with nasal oxygen inhalation because he could not remain in a supine or prone position. We performed the unilateral splanchnic nerve alcohol block under right lateral position at the T12 and L1 vertebral level. For a short time after the block, he required oxygen inhalation therapy. Three months after unilateral alcohol block, he is still alive without severe abdominal pain and severe dyspnea.

  • The Swyer-James syndrome is a relatively uncommon disease entity presented with unilateral hyperlucent lung due to hypoplasia of a pulmonary artery and bronchiectasis of the affected lung. The main finding is a hyperlucent lung with small hilar shadows on the chest X-ray. Pulmonary angiography is the standard method for diagnosis. We report a case of the Swyer-James syndrome with a brief review of literature.

  • Acute Japanese encephalitis (JE) is an endemic viral infectious disease in various parts of Far East and Southeast Asian countries including Korea. Bilateral thalami are the most common involving sites in JE. Other areas including the basal ganglia, substantia nigra, red nucleus, pons, cerebral cortex and cerebellum may be also involved. We report an extremely unusual brain diffusion-weighted MR imaging (DWI) findings in a 53-year-old man with serologically proven JE involving unilateral deep gray matter and temporal lobe, which shows multifocal high signal intensities in left thalamus, left substantia nigra, left caudate nucleus and left medial temporal cortex on T2-weighted image and DWI with iso-intensity on apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) map.

  • Intramuscular hemangioma is a rare type of hemangiomas and sometimes overlooked by orofacial pain specialist who encountered various types of masticatory muscle problems. A 42-year-old male, presented with feeling of unilateral hypertrophy on left mandibular area, is finally diagnosed as hemangioma with thrombus by excisional biopsy. However, he was initially treated by injection of botulinum toxin A due to misdiagnosis as unilateral masseter hypertrophy. In the present report, we remind the importance of careful examination and diagnostic images to orofacial pain clinicians in early detection of intramuscular hemangioma of masticatory muscles.

  • Distraction osteogenesis is a technique of bone lengthening by gradual movement and subsequent remodeling. Distraction forces applied to bone also create tension in the surrounding soft tissues, distraction histiogenesis. Distraction osteogenesis is used to correct facial asymmetry, such as patients with hemifacial microsomia, maxillary or mandibular retrusion, cleft lip & palate, alveolar defect and craniofacial deficiency. Hemifacial microsomia is characterized by unilateral facial hypoplasia, often with unilateral shortening of the mandible and subsequent malocclusion. This report describes two cases of hemifacial microsomia(type IIB). In these two cases, distraction osteogenesis was used to correct a facial asymmetry. Two patients underwent unilateral mandibular distraction osteogenesis of ascending ramus of the mandible with extraoral devices. Successful distraction osteogenesis was achieved in the patients with hemifacial microsomia.

  • The harmonious lip length, residual scar and Cupid's bow width and peak with a normal side are the aims of a unilateral cleft lip repair. Also, long term amelioration without necessary of revisional surgeries may be the ideal conditions. No one method can satisfy the wide varieties of cleft lip deformities. Recently with rearrangement of paraoral muscle and some modifications, a straight line repair technique has been concerned again. Straight scar line, simplicity, and short learning curve are the advantages of the straight line technique. Here two cases of the simple straight line technique were presented and discussed for its usefulness and reliability with short reviews of previous reports.
