  • A study on the free vibration and linear buckling analyses of thick plates is described in this article. In order to determine the natural frequencies and buckling loads of plates, a plate element is developed by using isogeometric approach. The Non-uniform B-spline surface (NURBS) is used to represent both plate geometry and the unknown displacement field of plate. All terms required in isogeometric formulation are consistently derived by NURBS definition. The capability of the present plate element is demonstrated by using several numerical examples. From numerical results, it is found to be that the present isogeometric element can predict accurate natural frequencies and buckling loads of plates.

  • A nonlinear time-domain strip theory for vertical wave loads and ship responses is to be investigated. The hydrodynamic memory effect is approximated by a higher order differential equation without convolution. The ship is modeled as a non-uniform Timoshenko beam. Numerical calculations are presented for the S175 Containership translating with the forward speed in regular waves. The approach described in this paper can be used in evaluating ship motions and wave loads in extreme wave conditions and validating nonlinear phenomena in ship design.

  • Numerical studies were carried out to develop the moment magnifier method for long-term behavior of flat plates, subjected to combined in-plane compressive and transverse loads. Nonlinear finite element analyses were performed for the numerical studies. Through the numerical studies, the long term behavior of the flat plate subjected to uniform or nonuniform floor load was investigated, and creep effects on the degradation of strength and stiffness of the slabs were examined. As the result, the creep factor was developed to epitomizes with creep effect on the flat plate. The moment magnifier method using the creep factor was developed for long-term behavior of flat plates. Also, the design examples are shown for verification of proposed design method.

  • The Monte Carlo procedure was used to simulate wind load effects on a light-frame low-rise structure of irregular shape and a main wind force resisting system. Two analytical models were studied: rigid-beam and rigid-plate models. The models assumed that roof diaphragms were rigid beam or rigid plate and shear walls controlled system behavior and failure. The parameters defining wall stiffness, including imperfections, were random and included wall stiffness, wall capacity and yield displacements. The effect of openings was included in the simulation via a set of discrete multipliers with uniform distribution. One and two-story buildings were analyzed and the models can be expanded into multiple-floor structures provided that the assumptions made in this paper are not violated.

  • A safety assessment of reactor vessel lower head integrity under in-vessel vapor explosion loads has been performed. The core melt relocation parameters were chosen within the ranges of physically realizable bounds. The premixing and explosion calculations were performed using TRACER-II code. Using the calculated explosion pressures imposed on the lower head inner wall, strain calculations were peformed using ANSYS code. Then, the calculated strain results and the established failure criteria were used in determining the failure probability of the lower head, In the explosion analyses, it is shown that the explosion impulses are not altered significantly by the uncertain parameters of triggering location and time, fuel and vapor volume fractions in uniform premixture bounding calculations. Strain analyses show that the vapor explosion-induced lower head failure is not possible under the present framework of assessment. The result of static analysis using the conservative explosion-end pressure of 50 MPa also supports the conclusion. It is recommended, however, that an assessment of fracture mechanics for preexisting cracks be also considered to obtain a more concrete conclusion.

  • This paper addresses the effect of transverse shear deformation and rotary inertia on the natural frequency of beams under axial loads. It has been reported in the author's paper using a finite element analysis that the Timoshenko effect in a rotating disk deceases and then increases again with increasing rotation speed. To validate the phenomenon, the simply-supported beams under uniform tension are selected in this study since they have exact solutions in vibration problem. The results show that the axial tension in beams would not make the Timoshenko effect decrease monotonically but could make the effect increase again unlike the results reported in the other studies for beams.

  • Two-phase loop systems using the latent heat capacity of their working fluids can meet the increasing power requirements and are well suited to thermal management systems of future large applications, due to its abilities to handle large heat loads and to provide them at uniform temperatures regardless of the changes in the heat loads. Therefore some experiments on the effect of the gas and liquid superficial velocities, $j_G,\;j_L$ on flow pattern transition, void fraction and frictional pressure loss were performed on a co-current air-water flow in an adiabatic horizontal tube. The flow patterns were depended on the superficial velocity of each phase. It snowed that the increasing $j_L$, resulted in a significant increase in the frictional pressure loss for all flow patterns, at a constant $j_G$. The experimental results were also evaluated with some of existing models and correlations.

  • The present paper employs nonlocal strain gradient theory (NSGT) to study buckling behavior of functionally graded magneto-electro-thermo-elastic (FG-METE) nanoshells under various physical fields. NSGT modeling of the nanoshell contains two size parameters, one related to nonlocal stress field and another related to strain gradients. It is considered that mechanical, thermal, electrical and magnetic loads are exerted to the nanoshell. Temperature field has uniform and linear variation in nanoshell thickness. According to a power-law function, piezo-magnetic, thermal and mechanical properties of the nanoshell are considered to be graded in thickness direction. Five coupled governing equations have been obtained by using Hamilton's principle and then solved implementing Galerkin's method. Influences of temperature field, electric voltage, magnetic potential, nonlocality, strain gradient parameter and FG material exponent on buckling loads of the FG-METE nanoshell have been studied in detail.

  • Recently, an efficient and practical method has been developed for the generation of univariate non-Gaussian wind pressure time histories on low building roofs; this methodology requires intermittent exponential random numbers for the simulation. On the other hand, the conventional spectral representation scheme with random phase is found suitable for the generation of univariate Gaussian wind pressure time histories on low building roofs; this simulation scheme requires uniform random numbers. The dependency of these simulation methodologies on the random number generator is one of the items affecting the accuracy of the simultion result; therefore, an attempt has been made to investigate the issue. This note presents the observed sensitivity of random number sets in repetitive simulations of Gaussian and non-Gaussian wind pressures.
