  • This paper is ready to change a trend of a ultra high definition (UHD) video image, and it will contribute to improve the performance of the latest H.264 through the Uni-directional $8{\times}8$ intra-prediction idea which is based on developing a intra prediction compression. The Uni-directional $8{\times}8$ intra prediction is focused on a $8{\times}8$ block intra prediction using $4{\times}4$ block based prediction which is using the same direction of intra prediction. This paper describes that the uni-directional $8{\times}8$ intra-prediction gets a improvement around 7.3% BDBR only in the $8{\times}8$ block size, and it gets a improvement around 1.3% BDBR in the H.264 applied to the multi block size structures. In the case of a larger image size, it can be changed to a good algorithm. Because the video codec which is optimized for UHD resolution can be used a different block size which is bigger than before(currently a minimum of $4{\times}4$ blocks of units).

  • In this paper, we propose a new $4{\times}4$ intra coding method by unidirectional prediction for improvement of intra-frame coding efficiency of H.264/AVC. There are $4{\times}4$, $8{\times}8$, and $16{\times}16$ intra prediction modes in the current H.264/AVC. For the $4{\times}4$ intra prediction, coding efficiency is achieved by accurate prediction with small block size in relatively complicated regions, and the $16{\times}16$ intra prediction method can predict more accurately compared to $4{\times}4$ intra prediction with only one directional information in relatively homogeneous regions. We propose a unidirectional $4{\times}4$ intra prediction method adopting a small-size prediction and one directional prediction approaches. In order to improve coding efficiency, the proposed method is conducted by $4{\times}4$ block and their prediction directions are all the same, resulting that we need to send only one directional information for each macroblock. For intra-frame coding setting, we achieve 10.47% and 1.57% coding efficiency in BD-bitrate for only $16{\times}16$ intra mode and $4{\times}4$, $16{\times}16$ intra mode, respectively.

  • We propose an adaptive combination scheme of intra and inter prediction modes, where uni-directional intra prediction, bi-directional intra prediction, and inter prediction method are adaptively selected in an EMB (extended macro block). For each EMB, after all inter blocks have been encoded and decoded, the reconstructed blocks are used as reference data for bi-directional intra prediction of other blocks. Whereas conventional intra coding scheme does not use the right and below side pixels of the current block as reference data, the proposed method uses those for bi-directional intra prediction mode. In this paper, we propose three advanced techniques; (a) filter design for bi-directional prediction, (b) adaptive coding order scheme which increases the chance to use the bi-directional intra prediction mode, (c) modification of syntax to represent coding order. The information for the coding order is informed to the decoder by using the modified syntax structure without adding any additional flag. The simulation results show that the proposed scheme reduces the BD-Rate by 0.5%, on average, compared to KTA.

  • HEVC can increase the coding efficiency significantly compared with H.264/AVC however it requires much larger computational complexities in both encoder and decoder. In this paper, the decision process of inter-prediction modes in the HEVC reference software has been studied and a fast algorithm to reduce the computational complexity of encoder and decoder is introduced. The proposed scheme introduces a early decision criteria using the outputs of uni-directional predictions to skip the bi-directional prediction estimation. From the experimental results, it was proven that the proposed method can reduce the encoding complexity by 12.0%, 14.6% and 17.2% with 0.6%, 1.0% and 1.5% of coding efficiency penalty, respectively. In addition, the ratio of bi-directional prediction mode was reduced by 6.3%, 11.8% and 16.6% at the same level of coding efficiency penalty, respectively, which should lead to the decoder complexity reduction. Finally, the effects of the proposed scheme are maintained regardless of the use of the early skip decision algorithm which is implemented in the HEVC reference software.

  • In this study, the wave force distribution acting on a semi-infinite and vertical-type long structure is investigated considering diffraction. An analytical solution of the wave force acting on long structures is also suggested in this study. The wave forces on long structures are evaluated for monochromatic, uni-directional random, and multi-directional random waves. Diffraction effects in front of the breakwater and on the lee side of the breakwater are considered. The wave force on a long structure becomes zero when the relative length of the breakwater (1/L) is zero. The diffraction effects are relatively strong when the relative length of the breakwater is less than 1.0, and the wave forces decrease greatly for long structure when the relative length of the breakwater is larger than 0.5. Therefore, it is necessary to consider diffraction effects when the relative length of the breakwater is less than 1.0, and the relative length of the breakwater must be at least 0.5 in order to obtain a reduction of wave force on long structures.

  • Various compressive specimens were fabricated using autoclave do-gassing moulding to find out the compressive characteristics of the carbon/epoxy plain weave fabric composites with respect to the bias and shear angles. The stacking angles of the bias specimens are $[0]_{10T,}\;[3]_{10T,}\;[6]_{10T,}\;[9]_{10T,}\;[12]_{10T,}\;[15]_{10T,}\;[30]_{10T,}\;[45]_{10T}$ and those of the sheared specimens are $[{\pm}37]_{10T,}\;[{\pm}32]_{10T,}\;[{\pm}28]_{10T,}\;[{\pm}22]_{10T,}$ respectively. In order to verify the effect of micro-tow structures on compressive strength and modulus of the composites, compressive test specimens of uni-directional carbon/epoxy composites with the same materials and the same stacking conditions were fabricated. The modulus and strength of both types of composite specimens were compared with the prediction results based on the CLPT and a proposed strength formula. The tow deformation and fracture modes were investigated by microscopic observation.

  • Two different modes of rolling were applied to control the texture development in tantalum sheet. In the conventional uni-directional rolling, the typical rolling textures of a body-centered cubic metal which was primarily composed of <110>//(rolling direction) was developed. In a cross rolling where the specimen was rotated by $90^{\circ}$ between each pass, the rotated cube components, i.e. {100}<011> were greatly reinforced. The prediction of lattice rotation by the full-constraint Taylor model showed that the high stability and the symmetry of the rotated cube components caused their strengthening in cross-rolling. The two specimens were heated to $1,100^{\circ}C$ at $9^{\circ}C/min$and held for 1 hour for annealing, then cooled to room temperature in atmosphere. In spite of the significant difference in the deformation textures, the annealing textures were very similar. They developed strong <111>//(plane normal) components with negligible intensity at the rotated cube components, which was attributed to the negligible capability of the latter components to provide effective recrystallized grains.

  • The build-up of the heat field in shallow coastal water due to a point source has been investigated using an analytical solution of a time-integral form derived by extending the solutions by Holley(1969) and also presented in Harleman (1971). The uniform water depth is assumed with non-isotropic turbulent dispersion. The alongshore-flow is assumed to be uni-directional, spatially uniform and oscillatory. Due to the presence of the oscillatory alongshore-flow, the heat build-up occurs in an oscillatory manner, and the excess temperature thereby fluctuates in that course and even in the quasi-steady state. A series of calculations reveal that proper choices of the decay coefficient as well as dispersion coefficients are critical to the reliable prediction of the excess temperature field. The dispersion coefficients determine the absolute values of the excess temperature and characterize the shoreline profile, particularly within the tidal excursion distance, while the decay coefficient determines the absolute value of the excess temperature and the convergence rate to that of the quasi-steady state. Within the e-folding time scale $1/k_d$ (where $k_d$ is the heat decay coefficient), heat build-up occurs more than 90% of the quasi-steady state values in a region within a tidal excursion distance (L), while occurs increasingly less the farther we go to the downstream direction (about 80% at 1.25L, and 70% at 1.5L). Calculations with onshore and offshore discharges indicate that thermal spreading in the direction of the shoreline is reduced as the shoreline constraint which controls the lateral mixing is reduced. The importance of collecting long-term records of in situ meteorological conditions and clarifying the definition of the heat loss coefficient is addressed. Interactive use of analytical and numerical modeling is recommended as a desirable way to obtain a reliable estimate of the far-field excess temperature along with extensive field measurements.
