  • Diverter is an essential element in gravimetric calibration method of flowmeter. Error of diverter are influenced by flow velocity profile of nozzle outlet, motion velocity of diverter and detecting location. That's why, time detection position of diverter is tuned through repetitive test for minimizing error of diverter. Further the diverter must be compared with the other institutions test since the influence on the accuracy of the flow meter used in the test. In this paper, errors (flow velocity profile of nozzle outlet, motion velocity of diverter and detecting location) of diverter are decreased by produced uni-direction diverter and error of gravimetric calibration system is decreased. Uni-direction diverter is calibrated by gravimetric calibration system with precision flowmeter, the flowmeter is calibrated by pipe prover and other institutions and uni-direction diverter is evaluated. Uni-direction diverter is not influenced by flow velocity profile of nozzle outlet, motion velocity of diverter and detecting location. As a result, Uni-direction diverter can calibrate in wider scope since increasing ratio of maximum and minimum flow rate of uni-direction diverter.

  • As offshore structures such as offshore wind and offshore platforms have been installed frequently in ocean, scour effects are considered important. To test the scour effect, numerical simulation of scour has been carried out. However, the test was usually conducted under the uni-directional flow without bi-directional current flow in western sea of Korea. Thus, in this paper, numerical simulations of scour around offshore jacket substructure of HeMOSU-1 installed in western sea of Korea are conducted using FLOW-3D. The conditions are uni-directional and bi-directional flow considering tidal current. And these results are compared to measured data. The analysis results for 10,000 sec show that under uni-directional conditions, maximum scour depth was about 1.32 m and under bidirectional conditions, about 1.44 m maximum scour depth occurred around the structure. Meanwhile, about 1.5~2.0 m scour depths occurred in field observation and the result of field test is similar to result under bi-directional conditions.

  • Flow and pressure ripple in swash plate type piston pumps is largely dependent on the design of notches(silencing grooves) in the valve plate. In uni-directional pumps, the basic design concept for notches in the valve plate could be said to be established. It is easily deduced that the design concept for notches in uni-directional pumps can not be simply applied to bi-directional pumps requested for EHA(electric hydrostatic actuators). To carry out systematic research on technological issues regarding notch applications to bi-directional piston pumps, five notch designs are devised. The effects of the notch designs on the characteristics of the pump are investigated by numerical simulations and experiments. Through this study, basic concepts about notch design for bi-directional piston pumps are suggested.

  • In this study, the simultaneous use of a multi-level converter (MLC) as a DC-motor drive and as an active battery cell balancer is investigated. MLCs allow each battery cell in a battery pack to be independently switched on and off, thereby enabling the potential non-uniform use of battery cells. By exploiting this property and the brake regeneration phases in the drive cycle, MLCs can balance both the state of charge (SoC) and temperature differences between cells, which are two known causes of battery wear, even without reciprocating the coolant flow inside the pack. The optimal control policy (OP) that considers both battery pack temperature and SoC dynamics is studied in detail based on the assumption that information on the state of each cell, the schedule of reciprocating air flow and the future driving profile are perfectly known. Results show that OP provides significant reductions in temperature and in SoC deviations compared with the uniform use of all cells even with uni-directional coolant flow. Thus, reciprocating coolant flow is a redundant function for a MLC-based cell balancer. A specific contribution of this paper is the derivation of a state-space electro-thermal model of a battery submodule for both uni-directional and reciprocating coolant flows under the switching action of MLC, resulting in OP being derived by the solution of a convex optimization problem.

  • Various factors are investigated on the bed load transport driven by waves and current, and proper forms of bed load transport formulas mainly used in river hydraulics are chosen for the estimation of combined flow bed load transport after considering the additional factors. The BYO Model is employed for the computation of maximum bed shear stress and mean bed shear stress of the combined flow. The friction factor of uni-directional flow is estimated by using modified Keulegan equation, and equivalent roughness height is determined by obtaining correct answer for the bed shear stress of uni-directional flow. Empirical constant in each bed load formula is determined by applying it to Bijker's laboratory data of bed load transport by waves and current and the formulas obtained are discussed on their final forms with the values of empirical constants.

  • Until now, study on the hydraulic resistance characteristics of the ground at the river and the ocean current has been focused on the behavior under uni-directional flow without the direction change of flow. However, recent research result shows that scour rate which were measured under the bi-directional flow was much higher than those measured under uni-directional flow for both fine grained and coarse soil. Since the direction of inflow and return flow at the shore, where the structure will be constructed, is not always $180^{\circ}$, effect of the incidence angle on the hydraulic resistance capacity of the ground should be examined. Using the improved EFA which can consider the direction change of flow, hydraulic resistance capacities of the artificially composed clayey fine grained soil and clayey sandy soil under $0^{\circ}$, $90^{\circ}$, $135^{\circ}$, $180^{\circ}$ flow angle of incidence were assessed. Test result shows that hydraulic resistance capacity decreases and scour rate increase with the increase of the incidence angle between inflow and return flow. For the low consolidation pressure condition, hydraulic resistance capacity of the fine grained soil decreases rapidly. While the hydraulic resistance capacity of the coarse grained soil decreases more rapidly than fine grained soil under high consolidation pressure. Eventually since the larger the incidence angle between inflow and return flow, the larger the scour rate. Hydraulic resistance capacity under bi-directional flow($0^{\circ}{\longleftrightarrow}180^{\circ}$) should be examined for the design purpose.

  • Particulate matters in a water distribution system are main causes of turbidity and discoloration of tap water. They could be removed by conventional or uni-directional flushing in a water distribution system. The behaviors and required flow velocity of particles are not well known for their flushing. A model water main and hydrant were made from transparent acrylic pipe of 30mm and 16mm in diameter, respectively. We analyzed the effect of flushing velocity, particle density, and particle diameter. We found that the existence of break-though velocities at which particles begin to be removed, and which are affected by their physical properties. The removal efficiencies seemed to be influenced by resuspension capabilities related to their upward movement from the bottom. Heavy particles like scale were hard to remove through upflow hydrant because the falling velocity, calculated using Stokes' law, was higher. Particle removal efficiencies of upward hydrant and downward drain showed minor differences. Additionally, the length between hydrant and control valve affected flushing efficiency because the particulate matters were trapped in this space by inertia and recirculating flow.

  • The turnover-type sluice gate is typically actuated by the hydrauic system. The hydraulic system may be a open circuit type or a closed circuit type. The open circuit type hydraulic system is composed of a uni-directional pump, a directional control valve, pilot operated check valves, flow control valves, single-rod cylinders. The closed circuit type hydraulic system is composed of a bi-directional pump, pilot operated check valves, check valves, a counter balance valve, single-rod cylinders. The energy efficiencies of two hydraulic systems for the turnover-type sluice gate are compared here.

  • The present paper considers the method to estimate the bottom friction driven by waves and current on rough turbulent flow. Parameter adjusting technique is suggested for the computation of bed shear stress driven by uni-directional flow. and the value of parameter is determined by comparing the computational results against Bijker's laboratory data. For the computation of combined flow bottom shear stress, two methods are presented; one is the modified Bijker approach (BYO Model) and the other is the modified Fredsoe approach (FY Model). both of which are refined by the present writer. Both models are again refined in two aspects, and tested against the Bijker's laboratory data.

  • The typical hydraulic hoisting system of the rack-bar type sluice gate is composed of a hydraulic supply unit using an uni-directional pump, a direction control valve, a hydraulic motor, a counter balance valve, and flow control valves. Here, the hydrostatic transmission is applied to the hoisting system of rack-bar type sluice gate to simplify the operation of gate such that the upward and downward direction of gate is simply controlled by the direction of pump rotation. The new hydraulic hoisting system is composed of a bi-directional pump, a hydraulic motor, two counter balance valves, two check valves, two pilot-operated check valves, two relief valves and a shuttle valve. The characteristics of a suggested system are analyzed by computer simulations.
