  • In this test, there was two-dimensional model loading test implemented for analysis with respect to the problem of evaluating bearing capacity and the application range on the dredged and reclaimed ground, so it was possible to get the following result by comparing a result of loading test and an equation proposed previously. When the difference between average undrained shea. strength by (equation omitted)B of loading board width and the strength under. (equation omitted)B is mere than $\pm50%$, the applicability of Nc(coefficient of bearing capacity where $\phi=0$ analysis is considered in the single layer) was declined. As well, using Nc=5.7, 5.14(coeffcient of bearing capacity where $\phi=0$ analysis is applicable to saturated clay without special limit) for evaluating bearing capacity on the dredged and reclaimed ground causes poor applicability, therefore that seem to be applicable when water content is less than about 75% which makes the unconfined compression test possible.

  • In order to improve dredged area, long time and high cost is needed because of bad engineering and physical conditions. And there is no suitable example of pipe mixing method at domestic site. Moreover, applicability and effectiveness of this method is uncertain and shows different results between site and laboratory test. In order to solve these problems, we determined proper grain size distribution and water content range using dredged soil and reformed material (standard sand & material controlling grain size distribution) in the laboratory test. As a result, we confirmed that coefficient of sediment consolidation is increased and there is an improvement about separation sedimentation. Undrained shear strength was derived by water content of reformed dredging soil through regression analysis of test results. We suggest the correlation equation for determining mixing ratio.

  • Required essential technique is to determine the maximum recharge pressure in the well with condition of non-ground failure for the recovery of the groundwater. Based on the classical soil mechanics, the maximum recharge pressure was estimated with the numerical anlaysis and laboratory triaxial test. In the numerical analysis, the maximum recharge pressure is defined as the ground failure stress. The ground failure of the sand was defined as the piping and the one of the caly was to the undrained failure by the confined pressure increment. In the triaxial test, the recharge pressure in the ground was modified by the back pressure in the specimen. In case of sand, the volume strain was dramatically increased at the 93 % of the maximum back pressure, same meaning of the 0 effective stress state. In case of clay, the only radial volume strain was to reached 1.5 % without failure. Therefore, The maximum recharge pressure could be determined with the numerical analysis and triaxial test.

  • The load distribution and deformation of single piles which is embedded in Jumunjin sand and Kimhae clay are investigated, based on small scale model tests. Special attention is given to the consideration of flexural rigidity in laterally loaded piles. To consider the flexural rigidity of the pile, tests are performed with the aluminium piles of three different length under different relative densities and undrained shear strength. The test results indicate that the initial slope from the results of tests is proportional to the depth and pile-soil rigidity in both soils. But the increasing rate of the initial slope in the clay is less than in the sand. In addition, the soil resistance is more related to the depth and soil condition than the pile rigidity. Base on the test results, an empirical formula is proposed, which is good agreement with previously published small scale model test and field lateral load test.

  • In this research, an analytical solution for the coefficient of permeability of soils during consolidation is suggested. The pore pressure and the flow rate measurements at different locations during consolidation are utilized. The void ratio and volume compressibility of soils under consolidation are also estimated. A large consolidation testing device, possible in both vertical and radial drainage is designed and manufactured. And consolidation test with kaolinite soils were performed under radially inward drainage direction. Pore pressures in varying radial distances and flow rate with time were measured as well as vertical deformations. From the test results, the changes of permeability, volume compressibility and void ratio under consolidation and their spatial variations are estimated. Thus the proposed solution is verified by comparing with the experimentally estimated test results. In addition, it is confirmed that permeability, void ratio and volume compressibility decrease as consolidation and loading steps progress. Also, these soil characteristics increase with radial distant from drainage boundary, where lowest values observed, and slightly decrease as approaching undrained boundary.

  • The simple linear elastic-perfectly plastic model with soil parameters $s_u,\;E_u$ and n of undrained condition is usually applied to predict the displacement of a constructed diaphragm wall(DW) on soft soils during excavation. However, the application of this soil model for finite element analysis could not interpret the continued increment of the lateral displacement of the DW for the large and deep excavation area both during the elapsed time without activity of excavation and after finishing excavation. To study the characteristic behaviors of soil behind the DW during the periods without excavation, a series of tests on soft Bangkok clay samples are simulated in the same manner as stress condition of soil elements happening behind diaphragm wall by triaxial tests. Three kinds of triaxial tests are carried out in this research: $K_0$ consolidated undrained compression($CK_0U_C$) and $K_0$ consolidated drained/undrained unloading compression with periodic decrement of horizontal pressure($CK_0DUC$ and $CK_0UUC$). The study shows that the shear strength of series $CK_0DUC$ tests is equal to the residual strength of $CK_0UC$ tests. The Young's modulus determined at each decrement step of the horizontal pressure of soil specimen on $CK_0DUC$ tests decreases with increase in the deviator stress. In addition, the slope of Critical State Line of both $CK_0UC$ and $CK_0DUC$ tests is equal. Moreover, the axial and radial strain rates of each decrement of horizontal pressure step of $CK_0DUC$ tests are established with the function of time, a slope of critical state line and a ratio of deviator and mean effective stress. This study shows that the results of the unloading compression triaxial tests can be used to predict the diaphragm wall deflection during excavation.

  • In this study, dynamic deformation characteristics of sands under dry, saturated drained and undrained conditions were investigated at small to intermediate strains using the modified Stokoe-type torsional shear tests. The equipment was modified to saturate the specimen and to maintain the B-value above 0.99 during the test. On two types of sands, Geumgang sand from Korea and Toyoura sand from Japan, tests were carried out at various drainage conditions, void ratios, and effective confining pressures. Based on the test results, dynamic deformation characteristics, shear modulus (G) and damping ratio (D), and/or pore-water pressure were measured with strain amplitude and number of loading cycles. Variations of G and D at small ($\gamma_c<{10}^{-3}\%$) to medium (${10}^{-3}\%<\gamma_c<{10}^{-1}\%$) strains were measured under various drainage conditions, and test results were intensively compared considering drainage conditions.

  • A lot of dredging and reclaming projects are recently under way in Korea for the efficient use of limiting land space. Saemanguem area is special case of reclaiming by dredged soil. In case of a confined disposal of dredged soils by a pump dredger, generally coarse grained soils are separated from fines with dropping at the near part of the pump dredger. This kind of seperation of fine contents could be a factor of liquefaction by earthquake. In Korea, recently, earthquakes with magnitude of 3.0 or higher are distinctively increasing in 1990. In this study, cyclic shear characterics of Saemanguem Dredged sand depending on fine content were analyzed. A series of undrained cyclic triaxial test with cyclic stress ratio ($\sigma_d/{2\sigma_{{\upsilon}c}}'$) were performed on both isotropic consolidated specimen and sand with fine contents of 0%, 5%, 15%, 30%, 40% under the effective vertical stress of 100kPa and 50% and 60%, 70% of relative density for fine content of 0%, respectively. In the test results, cyclic shear strength increased by increasing of cyclic stress ratio($\sigma_d/{2\sigma_{{\upsilon}c}}'$) with increasing the relative density at the same number of cyclic under the effective confining pressure of 100kPa. It is almost highest the double amplitude(DA) 1%, 3%, 5%, 7.5% and 10% at fine content of 15% between Cyclic stress ratio($\sigma_d/{2\sigma_{{\upsilon}c}}'$) value at cyclic number five and fine content. Number of cyclic is 30 under the effective vertical stress of 100kPa, 70% of relative density for fine content of 15%. when the cyclic stress ratio at each relative density was compared at cyclic number five, the double amplitude(DA) 1%, 3%, 5%, 7.5% and 10%, and the pore-pressure ratio (${\Delta}u/{\sigma'}_c$) 0.95 value were compared; under the relative density of 70% and the effective confining pressure of 100kPa. The pore-pressure ratio (${\Delta}u/{\sigma'}_c$) 0.95 value showed a similar trend to the double amplitude (DA) 5% line.

  • In this study, the effect of scour was evaluated by regional and geotechnical characteristics and back data were accumulate for the design against scour through the local erosion characteristics evaluation of the Inchon coast. The erosion characteristics for the undisturbed soil samples collected near the main locations at the Incheon 2nd bridge, the Hwangyeong bridge, and a coast road in Songdo, are determined quantitatively through the scour rate tests. On the basic soil properties test, the bed around the Inchon coast chiefly consists of fined grained soils, and the soil samples were classified as silty clay(ML) or clay(CL) under the Unified Soil Classification System. On the scour rate test, the critical shear stress increases when the undrained shear strength increases as of the general trend of fine grained soils, and the average scour rate for the maximum velocity by 100 year flood is 173mm/hr at the Incheon 2nd bridge, 67mm/hr at the Hwangyeong bridge and 10mm/hr at a coast road in Songdo, respectively. Comparing to the scour rate of coarse grained soil, that of the bed around the Inchon coast is turned out to be very low. Therefore, the relative ability of the bed around the Inchon coast to resist erosion is assumed to be very high.

  • Coal ash from thermal power plants has been produced in large quantity and discarded uselessly, However, it is possible to supply construction material properly by utilizing the coal ash as construction material. In this study, the applicable model and its applicability for deformation analysis of coal ash fill and reclamation ground are studied. Camflay model gives complete constitutive law which illustrates deformation and pore water pressure while soil is loaded under the various stresses at drained and undrained conditions. The merit of proposed model which is acquired from laboratory tests is that only a few soil parameters are available. The whole parameters of Camflay model are obtained by typical mechanical test and CV triaxial test on the sample with optimum mixing ratio( i.e. fly ash : bottom ash=5:5) Then the results from proposed numerical analysis are compared with laboratory results. The differences between laboratory test and numerical analysis are negligible. Parameters deter mined from laboratory tests are useful as a basic data for deformation analysis of coal ash reclamation ground using Camflay model.
