  • Typical Tonpilz type underwater acoustic transducers making use of piezoelectric ceramics detect the magnitude of an acoustic pressure, a scalar quantity, and convert this pressure into a proportional output voltage. The scalar sensor has no directional sensitivity. In this paper, we have proposed a new vector sensor based on the Tonpilz transducer structure, which is sensitive to both the magnitude and the azimuthal direction of an acoustic wave. Validity of this new design has been confirmed with analytic equations and finite element analyses.

  • In modern naval ships, the design of submarines has continually evolved to improve survivability and it is also important to design ship against shock response. Exiting underwater ship design has been peformed due to results of static analysis considering shock acceleration by simple method. However, it can not be anticipated good assesment. The present study applied the Arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) technique, a fluid-structure interaction approach, to simulate an underwater explosion and investigate the survival capability of a damaged submarine liquefied oxygen tank. The Lagrangian-Eulerian coupling algorithm and the equations of state for explosives and seawater were also reviewed. It is shown that underwater explosion analysis using the ALE technique can accurately evaluate structural damage after attack. This procedure could be applied quantitatively to real structural design.

  • This paper deals with hybrid MAC protocol design for underwater acoustic networks. The proposed MAC protocol has the cluster structure with a master node and slave nodes, and the hybrid network structure that combines a contention free period based on TDMA(Time Division Multiple Access) with a contention period. The suggested MAC protocol has a beacon packet for supervising network, a guard period between time slots for packet collision, time tag for estimation of propagation delay with a master node, the time synchronization of nodes, entering and leaving of network, and the communication method among nodes. In this paper, we adapt the proposed hybrid MAC protocol to AUV network, that is the representative mobile device of underwater acoustic network, and verify this protocol is applicable in real underwater acoustic network environment.

  • An underwater positioning method that can be applied to structures for underwater construction is being developed at the Korea Institute of Ocean Science and Technology. The method uses an extended Kalman filter (EKF) based on an inertial navigation system for precise and continuous position estimation. The observation matrix was configured to be variable in order to apply asynchronous measured sensor data in the correction step of the EKF. A Doppler velocity logger (DVL) can acquire signals only when attached to the bottom of an underwater structure, and it is difficult to install and recover. Therefore, a complex sensor device for underwater structure attachment was developed without a DVL in consideration of an underwater construction environment, installation location, system operation convenience, etc.. Its performance was verified through a water tank test. The results are the measured underwater position using an ultra-short baseline, the estimated position using only a position vector, and the estimated position using position/velocity vectors. The results were compared and evaluated using the circular error probability (CEP). As a result, the CEP of the USBL alone was 0.02 m, the CEP of the position estimation with only the position vector corrected was 3.76 m, and the CEP of the position estimation with the position and velocity vectors corrected was 0.06 m. Through this research, it was confirmed that stable underwater positioning can be carried out using asynchronous sensors without a DVL.

  • Triangular structure is used as basic shape of artificial structures for generating the upwelling current in order to make rich fishing ground at sea. Artificial upwelling current could bring the deep sea water containing a lot of nutrients from the bottom up to the surface. The purpose of this study is to examine the flow characteristics around underwater triangular structure with various stratification parameter. An experimental study was carried out for the triangular structure model in the circulating water channel to investigate flow characteristics by flow visualization method. A velocity fields around the underwater structure were measured by particle image velocimetry(PIV). The experimental results showed that the upwelling effect at the back and upper region of the structure could be best when the water depth was 2 times of the structure height and the stratification parameter was approximately 3.0. These quantitative data will be useful to determine the functional efficiency cf artificial upwelling structures.

  • In this paper, we propose a hybrid transceiver for underwater acoustic communication, which allows the system to reduce complexity and increase robustness in time variant underwater channel environments. It is designed in the digital domain except for amplifiers and implemented by using a multiple digital signal processors (DSPs) system. The digital modulation technique is quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK) and frame synchronization is an energy (non-coherent) detection scheme based on the quadrature receiver structure. DSP implementation is based on block data parallel architecture (BDPA). We shaw experimental results in th? underwater anechoic basin at KRISO. The results indicate that the frame synchronization is performed without PLL. Also, we shaw that the adaptive equalizer can compensate frame synchronization error and the correction capability is dependent on the length of equalizer.

  • For an accurate shock response analysis of a floating structure such as a naval surface ship subjected to an UNDEX(UNDerwater Explosion), the cavitation effects due to reflected wave at free surface and wetted structural surface should be considered. In this study, for the consideration of cavitation effects an effective method using LS-DYNA/USA and its theoretical background were presented. Through the application of the analysis of bulk cavitation phenomena in the free field, it could be confirmed that almost the same results were obtained between LS-DYNA/USA code and the analytical method. for the investigation of cavitation effects from the structural shock response characteristics, three dimensional UNDEX shock response analysis of an idealized ship model was also carried out It could be found that the cavitation Phenomena gave significant effects on the structural shock response characteristics, and especially that the shock loadings calculated at the installed location of shipboard equipment were underestimated in the case of no consideration of the cavitation effects, which might cause the severe mistake in its shock-resistance design.

  • When placed under water, concrete is diluted with separating cementitious material and as a result the quality of concrete becomes poor. So as to solve the problem, underwater concrete is increasingly used for the construction and repair of the concrete structure under water. In this paper, 4 kinds of antiwashout admixtures and varying sand percentages were chosen to measure the suspended solids, pH, air contents, setting time and compressive strength of underwater concrete, and they meet "Standard for antiwashout admixture used for concrete". When sand percentage is 43%, the fluidity and filling of underwater concrete are superior to the others.he others.

  • Underwater acoustic materials are installed in order to reduce reflection, transmission and radiation of an underwater structure. The acoustic performance of the materials should be evaluated in accurately-controlled environment in terms of temperature and static pressure. In this paper, three pulse tubes, which is equipped with temperature and pressure controllers, are designed and developed to evaluate echo reduction and transmission loss for evaluating the performance below 10 kHz and 30kHz, respectively. The new procedures of the evaluation are suggested to improve the accuracy and the validation for the developed pulse tubes is carried out by comparing theoretical values to experimental ones.

  • Recently, antiwashout underwater concrete has used for underwater structure such as high strength massive concrete structures. When, concrete is placed in seawater the quality and durability of concrete could be doubt to especcially because the amount of cement placed in the concrete can be diminished by flowing seawater. In this study, antiwashout underwater concrete mixed with mineral admixtures for improvement of properties was placed in air, water, and salt water. Half-cell potential and current density was of specimens which made under different conditions measured for estimating corrosion degree. The experimental results demostrate that corrosion resistantce in saltwater was little and mineral admixtures improved properties of concrete.
