Effect of the support pressure modes on face stability during shield tunneling

  • Shield tunneling method is widely used to build tunnels in complex geological environment. Stability control of tunnel face is the key to the safety of projects. To improve the excavation efficiency or perform equipment maintenance, the excavation chamber sometimes is not fully filled with support medium, which can reduce the load and increase tunneling speed while easily lead to ground collapse. Due to the high risk of the face failure under non-fully support mode, the tunnel face stability should be carefully evaluated. Whether compressive air is required for compensation and how much air pressure should be provided need to be determined accurately. Based on the upper bound theorem of limit analysis, a non-fully support rotational failure model is developed in this study. The failure mechanism of the model is verified by numerical simulation. It shows that increasing the density of supporting medium could significantly improve the stability of tunnel face while the increase of tunnel diameter would be unfavorable for the face stability. The critical support ratio is used to evaluate the face failure under the nonfully support mode, which could be an important index to determine whether the specific unsupported height could be allowed during shield tunneling. To avoid of face failure under the non-fully support mode, several charts are provided for the assessment of compressed air pressure, which could help engineers to determine the required air pressure for face stability.

  • In this paper the historical and technological developments of rock TBM and the technical classification of the machines proposed by ITA (International Tunnelling Association) are initially presented. Then the general criteria for the TBMs selection are discussed and at the end the limiting geological conditions for the application of TBMs are analysed.

3D coupled analysis on tunneling under groundwater (지하수가 터널굴착에 미치는 영향에 관한 3차원 연계해석)

  • This paper presents the effect of groundwater on tunnel performance. Fundamental issues in tunneling under high groundwater table together with an illustrative example are discussed. The effect of groundwater on tunnel excavation was examined using a 3D stress-pore pressure coupled finite-element analysis. The results of the 3D coupled analysis were then compared with those of a total stress analysis. Examined items included earth and pore pressures around lining, and lining stresses. Also the examined include face movement and ground surface movements. The results indicated that the effect of groundwater on tunnel excavation can only be captured through a fully coupled analysis. Implementations of the findings from this study are discussed in great detail.

  • This paper presents the effect of tunneling on bridge pile foundation being operated using three-dimensional numerical modeling. Also the parametric study on the depth of tunnel of which the diameter was 10 m was carried out in order to evaluate the behaviors of pile foundation due to the tunnel excavation. This paper expresses the changes of vertical and horizontal displacement, movement of soil and stress of the pile. Based on the results obtained from the numerical analysis some insights into the changes of pile foundation behaviors due to variations of tunneling location were mentioned and discussed.

  • Microtunneling techniques play a crucial role in the construction of pipelines. In this paper shows the automatic tunneling algorithm of microtunneling system by using fuzzy logic technology to assist operators assuring the quality of microtunneling construction. To have effective output value of fuzzy controller, we slightly modified the conventional defuzzificaton methods. The proposed automatic tunneling algorithm shows good tunneling results comparable with those of experts.

Experimental investigation of earth pressure on retaining wall and ground settlement subjected to tunneling in confined space

  • To study the influences of tunneling on the earth pressure and ground settlement when the tunnel passes through the adjacent underground retaining structure, 30 two-dimensional model tests were carried out taking into account the ratios of tunnel excavation depth (H) to lateral width (w), excavation width (B), and excavation distance using a custom-made test device and an analogical soil. Tunnel crossing adjacent existing retaining structure (TCE) and tunnel crossing adjacent newly-built retaining structure (TCN) were simulated and the earth pressure variations and ground settlement distribution during excavation were analyzed. For TCE condition, the earth pressure increments, maximum ground settlement and the curvature of the ground settlement curve are negatively related to H/B, but positively related to H/s and H/w. For TCN condition, most trends are consistent with TCE except that the earth pressure increments and the curvature of ground settlement curve are negatively related to H/w. The maximum ground settlement is larger than that observed in tunnel crossing the existing underground structure. This study provides an assessment basis for the design and construction under confined space conditions.

  • Recently, a few mega projects of subsea tunneling are completed or ongoing or under planning stage all across the world. In Korea, subsea tunnels connecting to Japan and China have been considered in the past decades. At the same time, subsea tunnels connecting to domestic islands were planned with preliminary design concepts. Development and improvement of indigenous techniques regarding subsea tunneling are essential in light of current technical level in Korea and their future impact on tunneling industry. In this paper, distinct features of subsea tunnel and construction trend of subaqueous tunnels are analyzed via case studies. Also, case studies about incidents related to subsea tunneling and required techniques to secure safety are presented.

  • Recent years have shown great advances in the feasibility of long subsea tunnels. Projects such as the Channel Tunnel, the Stoerebelt Tunnel or the Bosporus Crossing have pushed the boundaries of TBM tunneling technology and fueled the work on feasibility studies for even more challenging projects such as crossing the Qiongzhou or Gibraltar Straits. There are numerous geotechnical challenges such as wide variations of ground conditions, high operation pressures or long tunnel distances and finally geological uncertainties which must be solved in order to attempt such projects. Several operational challenges such as large muck quantities interventions under difficult conditions and long transport distances also have to be tackled. TBM manufacturer and construction industry have developed a number of approaches to these challenges which point into the right technical direction and have been proven successfully in recent experiences. Their further development will allow attempting several megaprojects which are currently under discussion.

  • These days, domestic tunnel demand has outstandingly been increased. Therefore, tunneling methods have been developed to excavate underground more economically and endurably from wood support methods, ASSM, to NATM and also more efficient methods has strongly been asked in recent years, such as single shell NATM. In this study, we will discuss on the disadvantages of this single shell NATM, one of tunneling methods with no lining.
