  • Analyzing the observational data of volcanic activities around the northern part of Korean peninsula, the odds of volcano eruption increases continuously. For example, the cumulative seismic moment and frequence observed near Mt. Baekdu show a sudden increased values. In this study, predicting the diffusion of volcanic ash for two cases were carried out by using interactive realtime simulator, which was developed during last 2 years as a research and development project. The first case is Sakurajima volcano (VEI=3) erupted in August 2013. The second case is assumed as the volcanic eruption at Mt. Baekdu (VEI=7) under landing circumstance of typhoon Maemi (August 2003) in Korean peninsula. The synoptic condition and ash diffusion for the two cases were simulated by WRF(Weather Research and Forecast) model and Lagrangian dispersion model, respectively. Comparing the simulated result of the first case (i.e., Sakurajima volcano) with satellite image, the diffusion pattern show acceptable result. The interactive realtime simulator can be available to support decision making under volcanic disaster around East Asia by predicting several days of ash dispersion within several minutes with ordinary desktop personal computer.

  • The Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) model is a method of studying the flow phenomenon of fluid using a computer and finding partial differential equations that dominate processes such as heat dispersion through numerical analysis. Through CFD, a lot of information about flow disorders such as speed, pressure, density, and concentration can be obtained, and it is used in various fields from energy and aircraft design to weather prediction and environmental modeling. The simulation used for fluid analysis in this study utilized Gexcon's (FLACS) CODE, such as Norway, through overseas journals, for the accuracy of the analysis results through many experiments. It was analyzed that a technology for treating two or more catalysts with physical properties under low-temperature atmospheric pressure conditions could not be found in the prior art. Therefore, it would be desirable to establish a continuous plan by reinforcing data that can prove the effectiveness of producing efficient synthetic oil (renewable oil) through the application that pyrolysis under low-temperature and atmospheric pressure conditions.

  • Background: Invasive plant species are considered a major threat to biodiversity, ecosystem functioning, and human wellbeing worldwide. Climatically suitable ranges for invasive plant species are expected to expand due to future climate change. The identification of current invasions and potential range expansion of invasive plant species is required to plan for the management of these species. Here, we predicted climatically suitable habitats for 11 invasive plant species and calculated the potential species richness and their range expansions in different provinces of the Republic of Korea (ROK) under current and future climate change scenarios (RCP 4.5 and RCP 8.5) using the maximum entropy (MaxEnt) modeling approach. Results: Based on the model predictions, areas of climatically suitable habitats for 90.9% of the invasive plant species are expected to retain current ecological niches and expand to include additional climatically suitable areas under future climate change scenarios. Species richness is predicted to be relatively high in the provinces of the western and southern regions (e.g., Jeollanam, Jeollabuk, and Chungcheongnam) under current climatic conditions. However, under future climates, richness in the provinces of the northern, eastern, and southeastern regions (e.g., Seoul, Incheon, Gyeonggi, Gyeongsangnam, Degue, Busan, and Ulsan) is estimated to increase up to 292%, 390.75%, and 468.06% by 2030, 2050, and 2080, respectively, compared with the current richness. Conclusions: Our study revealed that the rates of introduction and dispersion of invasive plant species from the western and southern coasts are relatively high and are expanding across the ROK through different modes of dispersion. The negative impacts on biodiversity, ecosystem dynamics, and economy caused by invasive plant species will be high if preventive and eradication measures are not employed immediately. Thus, this study will be helpful to policymakers for the management of invasive plant species and the conservation of biodiversity.

  • Spatial moment analysis has been performed on the concentration of the first species in a multispecies solute transport in porous media. Finite difference numerical technique was used in obtaining the solute concentration. A constant continuous source of contaminant was injected at the inlet of the domain. Results suggest that the decaying of solute mass increases as the magnitude of mean fluid velocity increases. The dispersion coefficient is highly time dependent under decaying of solutes with a complex behavior of mixing of solutes. The solute mobility and mixing varies non-linearly with time during its initial period, while the same ceases with higher decay rates of the first species much faster.

  • The present study investigates experimentally the characteristics of liquid jet, which is, the spray flow in the normal direction of the air stream under the flow conditions of air velocity $110\sim125m/s$. The present study adopts with the flow visualization technique using a short duration light bulb and the image processing analyse with CCD camera. Two types of injector were used: one is a flat plate type, and the other is backward facing step type, which height are 5, 8, 10mm. Dispersion of liquid jet can be represented by gray level of CCD camera. In the upstream of liquid jet, the backward facing step shows better liquid jet penetration. However, in the downstream. mean droplet size for backward facing step injector is smaller than that for flat plate injector

  • Propagation of the generalized Rayleigh waves in an elastic half-space covered by an elastic layer for different initial stress combinations and imperfect contact conditions is investigated. Three-dimensional linearized theory of elastic waves in initially stressed bodies in plane-strain state is employed, the corresponding dispersion equation is derived and an algorithm is developed for numerical solution to this equation. Numerical results on the influence of the initial stress patterns and on the influence of the contact conditions are presented and discussed. The case where the external forces are "follower forces" is considered as well. These investigations provide some theoretical foundations for the study of the near-surface waves propagating in layered mechanical systems and can be successfully used for estimation of the degree of the bonded defects between layers, fault characteristics and study of the behavior of seismic surface waves propagating under the bottom of the oceans.

  • Bayesian and empirical Bayesian methods have become quite popular in the theory and practice of statistics. However, the objective is to often produce an ensemble of parameter estimates as well as to produce the histogram of the estimates. For example, in insurance pricing, the accurate point estimates of risk for each group is necessary and also proper dispersion estimation should be considered. Well-known Bayes estimates (which is the posterior means under quadratic loss) are underdispersed as an estimate of the histogram of parameters. The adjustment of Bayes estimates to correct this problem is known as constrained Bayes estimators, which are matching the first two empirical moments. In this paper, we propose a way to apply the constrained Bayes estimators in insurance pricing, which is required to estimate accurately both location and dispersion. Also, the benefit of the constrained Bayes estimates will be discussed by analyzing real insurance accident data.

  • The complex nature of low flow mixing in natural channels has been investigated using both laboratory experiments and the numerical solution of a proposed mathematical model that is based on a set of mass balance equations describing the mixing and mass exchange mechanisms. Laboratory experiments, which involved collection of channel geometry, hydraulic, and dye dispersion test data, were conducted in a model of four pool and riffle sequences in a 49-m long tilting flume. The experimental results show that flow over the model pool-riffle sequences is highly non-uniform. Concentration-time curves are significantly skewed with long tails. Comparison between measured and predicted concentration-time curves shows good agreement in the general shape, peak concentration and time to peak. The proposed model shows significant improvement over the conventional one-dimensional dispersion model in predicting natural mixing processes in open channels under low flow conditions through pools and riffles.

  • Amorphous $TiO_2$ thin films were deposited on silicon substrates by the RF magnetron sputtering under various conditions, and studied by the spectroscopic ellipsometry (SE). To determine the optical constants as a function of photon energy and also to depth-profile the as-deposited $TiO_2$ thin films, we analyzed the ellipsometric spectra using the effective medium approximation and the dispersion equations. Especially, we improved the modeling accuracy by selectively using either the Sellmeier or the Forouhi and Bloomer dispersion equation in different energy regions.
