  • This paper presents a numerical procedure for analyzing the joints between precast post-tensioned segments. A computer program for the analysis of reinforced concrete structures was run for this problem. Models of material nonlinearity considered in this study include tensile, compressive and shear models for cracked concrete and a model for reinforcing steel with smeared crack. An unbonded tendon element based on the finite element method, that can describe the interaction between the tendon and concrete of prestressed concrete member, was experimentally investigated. A joint element is newly developed to predict the inelastic behavior of the joints between segmental members. The proposed numerical method for the joints between precast post-tensioned segments was verified by comparison of its results with reliable experimental results.

  • Prestressing steels are susceptible to corrosion, which is considered the major reason in the deterioration of prestressed concrete structures. To solve this problem, many research have been made to utilize new type of tendons. FRP tendons have many advantages compared to steel tendons. However, FRP tendons have some disadvantages, such as no plastic behavior. This study focused on the flexural behavior of prestresssed concrete beams which is fabricated by post-tensioning method with CFRP (Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic) tendons. Th results drawn from the study, prestressed concrete beams with CFRP tendons have higher flexural cracking load, flexural yielding load, and flexural fracture load. While displacement at the fracture stage is lower compared to prestressed concrete beams with steel tendon. Excessive steel reinforcement lead lower ductility index. So, appropriate reinforcement guideline is needed. Further more, prestressed concrete beams with CFRP tendons can have sufficient ductility index when ruptured by crushing of concrete or used unbonded tendon. Therefore, the best design method for prestressed concrete beams with CFRP tendons is over-reinforcement, and use of unbonded tendon.

  • In order to overcome the brittle failure of strengthening with FRP-rebars inherent to their brittle properties, two approaches have been attempted. One is to improve the properties like ductile Hybrid FRP Rods, and the other is to develop a ductile strengthening with partially unbonded FRP rebars. Experiments on real size specimen were performed to evaluate the performance of NSM (Near Surface Mounted Strengthening) and SIM (Section Increment Methods) with FRP rebars. This paper discusses the results of the tests on 8 slab specimen in terms of flexural resistance, ductility, and fatigue. They show that NSM or S1M with FRP rebars are very effective measures to strengthen existing RC structures. Above all, strengthening with partially unbonded ductile Hybrid FRP Rods shows sufficient ductility similar to that of properly designed RC structures.

  • This paper shows the simplified equation to predict the ultimate moment capacity and corresponding rod stress in reinforced concrete beam with external post-tensioning rods. Because the stress of external post-tensioning rod depends on the beam deflection, the previous analytical model for post-tensioned beams requires a tedious iteration process. Also, the stress equations in ACI code or other researchers' models are suitable only for internal tendons in concrete beams. In this study, given the lack of analytical approaches to predict the nominal stress of the external unbonded rod, a simple and robust equation has been proposed for externally post-tensioned concrete beams. It is concluded that the proposed equation predicted the stress of external steel rods in post-tensioned concrete beams reasonably well.

  • This paper presents an analytical prediction of Nonlinear characteristics of prestressed concrete bridges by strengthened of externally tendon considering the work sequence, using beam-column element based on flexibility method and tendon element. The beam-column element was developed with reinforced concrete material nonlinearities which are based on the smeared crack concept. The fiber hysteresis rule of beam-column element is derived from the uniaxial constitutive relations of concrete and reinforcing steel fibers. The tendon element represent the bonded tendon and unbonded tendon behaviors. Beam-column element and tendon element was be subroutine A computer program, named RCAHEST (Reinforced Concrete Analysis in Higher Evaluation System Technology), for the analysis of RC and PSC structures was used. The proposed numerical method for prestressed concrete structures by strengthened of externally tendon is verified by comparison with reliable experimental results.

  • This study investigates the flexural behavior and strengthening performance of RC beams strengthened by prestressed CFRP laminates through static bending tests. Tests on RC beams strengthened with prestressed CFRP laminates were carried out for both cases where the CFRP laminates were bonded or not and the corresponding effects on the strengthening performances of RC beams were examined. Experimental results revealed that RC beams strengthened with prestressed CFRP laminates presented increased crack load and yield load according to the level of prestress. Premature debonding occurred before the RC beam strengthened with bonded prestressed CFRP laminates reaches the maximum load, and the specimen presented similar behavior to the one exhibited by the specimen with unbonded laminates.

  • Strengthening by bonded CFRP sheet/plate onto the surface has been generally used for the R.C. beams. The strengthening efficiency of this system depends on the performance of the adhesive interlace between the beam and the CFRP, and the interlace often causes unexpected failure. In this paper, an unbonding system is proposed with prestressed CFRP. Finite element analysis has been conducted using DIANA for the R.C. beams strengthened by prestressing the unbonded CFRP plate. The results of analysis were compared with those of experiment.

  • In the post-tensioned concrete member, additional reinforcement is required to prevent failure in the anchorage zone. In this study, the details of reinforcement suitable for the anchorage zone of the post-tensioned concrete member using circular anchorage was proposed based on the experimental results. The tests were conducted with the compressive strength of concrete and reinforcement types as variables. The experimental results indicated that the additional reinforcement for the anchorage zone is required when the compressive strength of concrete is less than 17.5 MPa. U-shaped reinforcement shows most effective performance in terms of maximum strength and cracks patterns.

  • For evaluating equations of bursting force in different codes, comparative study of the formulas was conducted. Because the equations does not consider variables such as shape of anchorages and duct, a relation between the bursting forces and the variables has to be analyzed. In this paper, the bursting forces equation was proposed by finite element analysis. As evaluation through comparison of the proposed equation with the previous ones and an experiment, it was figured out that bursting force computed by the proposed equation could be used for design of reinforcement in the anchorage zone.

  • In this paper, an unbonded post-tensioning anchorage for a single-stranded wire that allows more efficient stress distribution in the post-tensioned anchorage zone was developed by using a finite element analysis using a commercial program. The stress analysis was carried out using a 3D model in the anchorage zone of the concrete member using the developed anchorage. The result of analysis ensured that the developed anchorage reduced the maximum bursting stress in anchorage zone compared to the case of existing anchorage and the location where maximum bursting stress also occurred closer to the anchorage. Bursting force was calculated using AASHTO, modified $M{\ddot{o}}rsch$ and Stone. As a result, it was concluded that an effective reinforcement design of the anchorage zone can be designed by modified $M{\ddot{o}}rsch$.
