  • Heavy metal ions in water were removed using algal biomass as adsorbents. Absorbents were dried for 3 days, ground them by 40~60 mesh and then were swelled in a buffer solution for 1hr. After being packed in the column, commercially available standard solution of Cd(II) and Pb(II) ions were diluted to get the suitable concentration and then it was eluted with the rate of 1mι/min. Heavy metals on the adsorbents were recovered with nitric acid. More amounts of Cd(II) or Pb(II) ions in green algae, Ulva pertusa, than in brown algae, Sargassum horneri, were adsorbed. Pb(II) ion was adsorbed more than Cd(II) ion in both algae. The pH effect of adsorbed amounts of Cd(II), Pb(II) ions on the biomass was shown the following order ; pH 10.5 > 8.5 > 7.0 > 5.5 > 3.5. Recovery ratio of metal ions front algae is shown higher in acidic or neutral conditions than it in alkalic ones. Pb(II) ion is recovered relatively more than Cd(II) ion in our system.

  • The seasonal change of algal flora and intertidal community structures of Bagryoungdo Island was investigated at Dumujin from February to November 2006. The description of subtidal algal community was made in October by Scientific SCUBA-diving. The total of 43 species, including 6 Chlorophytes, 6 Phaeophytes, 29 Rhodophytes and 2 sea grasses were identified in this survey. The occurrence of species according to season, listed as follows, 26 species in winter, 34 in spring, 18 in summer and 18 in autumn. Three species, Laminaria japonica, Neorhodomela aculeata and Ulva pertusa were dominant. The algal zonation of intertidal zone was figured out by Porphyra spp., Gloiopeltis furcata, Caulacanthus okamurae, Gelidium divaricatum - Neorhodomela aculeata, Enteromorpha compressa - Ulva pertusa, Dumontia simplex, Laminaria japonica from upper to lower zone. The zonation of subtidal zone was figured out by Ulva pertusa - Laminaria japonica - Zostera marina (sea grass), crustacean red algal population in autumn. The average of biomass of macroalgae was measured as 119.4 g∙dry wt/m2.

  • In this study, the food selection of abalone, Haliotis discus hannai, on four various diets, Ulva pertusa, Laminaria japonica, Navicula spp., and artificial diet, was investigated. The abalones in Ulva pertusa and Navicula spp groups had the higher migration rate than the others. The artificial group had the lowest migration rate. As to the growth, Ulva pertusa group had the highest daily increment and the growth rate, which is 120.7 ${\mu}$m and 2.41%. The value of Navicula spp. group is 102.0 ${\mu}$m and 2.04% and that of Laminaria japonica group is 88.7 ${\mu}$m and 1.77%. The lowest one is 81.7 ${\mu}$m and 1.63%, which appeared at the artificial diet group. We suggest that, when breeding Haliotis discus hannai and the diets which is easy to be ingested and digested, as well as contains much nutrient content, should be used. If the artificial diet is used, it should contain low concentration of flesh-eating content.

  • Salinity ecotypes in Ulva pertusa Kjellman were examined for the growth responses of the three isolates taken from different salinity regimes. All isolates showed a broad salinity tolerance, but growth patterns were correlated with the salinity regime of their original habitat. The germlings from Anin exhibited optimum growth at the native salinity of 32%. The germlings from Yongyon which had hypersaline habitats were tolerable to high salinity, i.e. growth rates peaked at 40%, whereas those from Samgando which had low salinities achieved maximum growth rate at 24\%. The germlings of inter-isolate cross demonstrated intermediate growth response between that of their respective parents. Our data also clearly indicated intraspecific differences among the three isolates, which was interpreted as development of different physiological ecotypes. We conclude that U. pertusa may consist of several ecotypes, each of which has some capacity for physiological adaptation to salinity variations.

  • Cosmopolitan green macroalga, Ulva pertusa is a widely spread species in most coastal waters. This benthic alga is appearing on marine objectives causes significantly economical and social problems. To prevent fouling organisms, new antifouling (AF) agents, such as ziram, diruon, zinc pyrithione, copper pyrithione, DBNPA and triclosan are used. However, the evaluations of new antifouling system of those agents strongly need more information on algae species for considering environment effect. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to evaluate the activity of antifouling system using Ulva spores and Nitzschia pungens. In addition, new AFS were evaluated the toxicity of microalga, Nitzschia pungens. In the motility of Ulva spores, ziram and zinc pyrithione were shown 50% higher inhibition motility than diuron, copper pyritione, DBNPA and triclosan. Ziram was appered the highest AFS of Ulva sore attachment. Copper pyrithione at the concentration of $100{\mu}g/L$ was inhibited 80% growth rate comparison of control. In conclusion, each new AF agents showed their specific AF activities against marine organisms based on this work.

  • We studied the repeated-batch process for the bioethanol production from the hydrolysate of Ulva pertusa Kjellman using yeast Pichia stipitis, which is able to assimilate C6- and C5-monosaccharides. During 180-hour operations, the repeated-batch process was carried out stably, and the average bioethanol concentration reached 11.9 g/L from about 30 g/L of reducing sugar in the hydrolysate. Meanwhile, the bioethanol yields, based on the reducing sugar and the quantitative TLC analysis, were 0.40 and 0.37, respectively, which corresponded to 78.4% and 72.5% of theoretical value, respectively. Throughout the quantitative process analysis, it was also demonstrated that 39.67 g-bioethanol could be produced from 1 kg of dried Ulva pertusa Kjellman. In this study, we verified that the bioethanol production from the hydrolysate of Ulva pertusa Kjellman was feasible using a yeast Pichia stipitis, particularly during the repeated-batch operation.

  • Benthic marine algal flora and community structure of Yongho-dong area in Pusan, Korea were investigated seasonally in intertidal and subtidal zones by a quadrat method along 5 transect lines from July 1996 to April 1997. In this area, a total of 99 species including 3 blue-green, 13 green, 26 brown and 57 red algae was found. Among them, 33 taxa, together with dominant Ulva pertusa and Corallina pilulifera, occurred throughout the year. Enteromorpha spp. and Ulva spp. vertically distributed in upper and middle zone, while Simphyocladia latiuscula, Chondria crassicaulis, Corallina pilulifera and Sargassum sup. in lower zones. Biomass per unit area exhibited a wide range of variation, from 1,241 g/$m^2$(spring) to 1,648 g/$m^2$(summer) in fresh weight. Maximum and minimum species diversity were recorded in spring and autumn, respectively. Results of the UPGAM cluster analysis suggest that the examined 5 sites can be divided into two groups, sites exposed to open sea (transects 1, 2, 3) and comparatively sheltered sites (transects 4, 5) faced with the Pusan Harbor. The former group is represented by large brown algae, Sargassum and Hizikia, while Ulva pertusa and Lomentaria species are mainly found in the latter group. A calcareous alga, Corallina pilulifera occurred dominantly in both groups throughout the year. In conclusion, number of species in this area was remarkably reduced as compared to the previous data. This result may suggest probably more change of algal vegetation in future, considering the physical and chemical pollutions loaded in the coastal marine environment of this area.

  • The species composition and distributional patterns in marine benthic algae at intertidal zone in Masan Bay were investigated seasonally throughout 2007. A total of 42 species, 5 Chlorophyta 8 Phaeophyta and 29 Rhodophyta were recorded, and dominant species were Enteromorpha linza, Ulva pertusa, Sargassum thunbergii, Gelidium amansii, G. divaricatum, Corallina pilulifera, Gracilaria textorii, and Polysiphonia morrowii during study periods. Especially the vertical distribution of dominant algal species was remarkable: U. pertusa and G. divaricatum were dominated in the upper part, E. intestinalis, E. linza, S. thunbergii and G. divaricatum were in the middle part, and U. pertusa, Undaria pinnatiffda, S. thunbergii, G. amansii, G. divaricatum and C. pilulifera mainly occurred in the low part of tidal zone. The numbers of species were different with seasons and stations; Higher number of species was 38 species in winter, whereas 28 species were the lowest in fall. The number of species was higher at stations 4 and 6 Mile the lower value was at stations 1 and 2 than other stations. The spatial distributional patterns of marine benthic algal composition at each station in dendrogram and MDS ordination were due to the differences of local topography and physical characteristics such as currents and water movements.
