  • Acoustic microscopy has attracted much intrest recently as potential mondestructive evalution technique for detecting and sizing defects of surface and sub-surface. Also acoustic emission testing method has been developed for detecting microcracks which is more than 30 umm in length quintitatively on ceramics material. In the present paper, acoustic emission during the four point bending test in hot-pressed sintered Si$\_$3/N$\_$4/ specimen which was stressed bythermal shock has been measured by high sensitive sensing system. The surface and sub-surface cracks were detected by scanning acoustic microscope of 800 MHz and conventional ultrasonic testing in C-scope image. The purpose was to investigate the location and size of cracks by SAM and AE technique, whose experimental datas demontrates good agreement for detecting microcracks.

  • This paper describes a localization method based on Monte Carlo Localization approach for a mobile robot. The method uses range data which are measured from ultrasound transmitting beacons whose locations are given a priori. The ultrasound receiver on-board a robot detects the range from the beacons. The method requires several beacons, theoretically over three. The method proposes a sensor model for the range sensing based on statistical analysis of the sensor output. The experiment uses commercialized beacons and detector which are used for trilateration localization. The performance of the proposed method is verified through real implementation. Especially, it is shown that the performance of the localization degrades as the sensor update rate decreases compared with the MCL algorithm update rate. Though the method requires exact location of the beacons, it doesn't require geometrical map information of the environment. Also, it is applicable to estimation of the location of both the beacons and robot simultaneously.

  • In the navigation for a mobile robot, the collision avoidance with unexpected obstacles is essential for the safe navigation and it is independent of the technique used to control the mobile robot. This paper presents a new collision avoidance algorithm using neural network for the safe navigation of the autonomous mobile robot equipped with CAN and ultrasonic sensors. A tracked wheeled mobile robot has a stability and an efficiency to move on a rough ground. And its mechanism is simple. However it has difficulties to recognize its surroundings. Because the shape of the tracked wheeled mobile robot is a square type, sensor modules are generally located on the each plane surface of 4 sides only. In this paper, the algorithm using neural network is proposed in order to avoid unexpected obstacles. The important character of the proposed algorithm is to be able to detect the distance and the angle of inclination of obstacles. Only using datum of the distance and the angle, informations about the location and shape of obstacles are obtained, and then the driving direction is changed. Consequently, this algorithm is capable of real time processing and available for a mobile robot which has few sensor modules or the limited sensing range such as a tracked wheeled mobile robot. Effectiveness of the proposed algorithm is illustrated through a computer simulation and an experiment using a real robot.

  • We developed SAW gas sensor for monitoring SOx gas with high sensitivity. It was fabricated as a microsensor for detecting SOx gas by depositing sensing material on SAW device. As a detecting layer material, CdS was selected. Deposition of CdS in the form of thin films was carried out by the ultrasonic spray pyrolysis method using ultrasonic spray nozzle. Thin films with the uniform and large surface area for sensors were deposited. The stable pyrolysis environment provided by uniform and fine droplets formed by spray nozzle made it possible to obtain thin films with excellent quality. The minimum grain size of the CdS thin films was about 50 nm when deposited at $300^{\circ}C$. SAW gas sensors showed reasonable sensitivity and reproducibility. Further studies are required to investigate the interference of other gases to SOx gas detection.

  • A high-intensity ultrasound wave generates acoustic streaming and acoustic radiation forces when propagating through a medium. An acoustic radiation force generated in a three-dimensional space can produce a solid tactile sensation, delivering spatial information directly to the human skin. We placed 154 ultrasound transmit elements with a frequency of 40 kHz on a concave circular dish, and generated an acoustic radiation force at the focal point by transmitting the ultrasound wave. To feel the tactile sensation better, the transmit elements were excited by sine waves whose amplitude was modulated by a 60 Hz square wave. As an application of ultrasonic tactile sensing, a region where tactile sense is formed in the air is used as an indicator for the position of the hand. We confirmed the utility of ultrasonic tactile feedback by implementing a system that provides the number of fingers to a machine by receiving the shape of the hand at the focal point where the tactile sense is detected.

  • According to the Korea Occupational Safety and Health Agency's (KOSHA) report on industrial accident statistics over the past four years, the number of casualties at construction sites from 2017 to June 2020 was about 93,158 and the number of deaths was about 1,977, showing a high trend of safety accidents among the eight major occupational groups, with the construction industry ranking third in total and the death rate being the highest in total. Among them, the number of deaths caused by falls in the entire occupational category is about 1,267, the highest rate of deaths due to contact is about 522, which is a frequent safety accident among the top three accident types. This paper aims to help reduce the overall proportion of construction safety accidents by developing smart safety sensing devices using ultrasonic sensors to prevent two types of safety accidents, which have the highest rate of occurrence among various types of safety accidents occurring at construction sites.

  • Ultrasonic sensor is suitable as a next-generation autonomous driving assist device because its lower price compared to that of other sensors and its sensing stability in the external environment. Although Pb(Zr, Ti)O3 (PZT)-relaxor ferroelectric system has excellent piezoelectric properties, the change in capacitance is large in the daily operating temperature range due to the low phase transition temperature. Recently, many studies have been conducted to improve the temperature stability of ferroelectric ceramics by controlling the grain size and crystal structure, so it is necessary to study the effect of the grain size on the piezoelectric properties and the temperature stability of PZT-relaxor ferroelectric system. In this study, the piezoelectric properties, phase transition temperature, and temperature coefficient of capacitance (TCC) of 0.9 Pb(Zr1-xTix)O3-0.1 Pb(Zn1/3Nb2/3)O3 (PZTx-PZN) ceramics with various grain sizes were investigated. PZTx-PZN ceramics with larger grain size showed higher piezoelectric properties and temperature stability, and are expected to be suitable for ultrasonic devices in the future.

  • The gas sensing characteristic of $MoS_2-MoO_2$ composite yolk-shell spheres were investigated. $MoO_3$-carbon composite spheres were prepared by ultrasonic spray pyrolysis of aqueous droplets containing Mo-source and sucrose in nitrogen, which were converted into $MoO_3$ yolk-shell spheres by heat treatment at $400^{\circ}C$ in air. Subsequently, $MoS_2-MoO_2$ composite yolk-shell spheres were prepared by the partial sulfidation of $MoO_3$. The $MoS_2-MoO_2$ composite yolk-shell spheres showed relatively low and irreversible gas sensing characteristics at < $200^{\circ}C$. In contrast, the sensor showed high and reversible response (S=resistance ratio) to 5 ppm $NO_2$ (S=14.8) at $250^{\circ}C$ with low cross-responses (S=1.17-2.13) to other interference gases such as ethanol, CO, xylene, toluene, trimethylamine, $NH_3$, $H_2$, and HCHO. The $MoS_2-MoO_2$ composite yolk-shell spheres can be used as reliable sensors to detect $NO_2$ in a selective manner.

  • Observation and data analysis techniques have been developed for observational blind areas in the lower atmosphere that are difficult to be monitored with fixed equipment on the ground. The vertical data of temperature and relative humidity are remotely collected by the UHF radiosonde installed on UAV and compared with the data measured in the 10 m weather tower. From the validated vertical profile, extrapolated surface temperature and the bulk transfer method were used to estimate the sensible heat flux depending on the atmospheric stability. Compared with the sensible heat flux measured by the 3-dimensional ultrasonic anemometer on the ground, the error of the sensible heat flux estimated was 23% that is less than the range of 30% allowed in the remote sensing. Estimated atmospheric boundary layer height from UAV sensible heat fluxes can provide useful data for air pollution diffusion models in real time and economically.

  • The tracking of current location of residents is an essential requirement for context-aware service of smart houses. This paper presents a wireless sensor network system which could detect location transition such as entrance and exit to a room and also identify the user who passed the room, without duty of wearing any sort of tag. We designed new sensor node to solve the problem of short operation lifetime of previous work[1] which has two pyroelectric infrared (PIR) sensors and an ultrasonic sensor, as well as a 2.4 GHz radio frequency wireless transceiver. The proposed user identification method is to discriminate a person based on his/her height by using an ultrasonic sensor. The detection idea of entering/exiting behavior is based on order of triggering of two PIR sensors. The topology of the developed wireless sensor network system is simple star structure in which each sensor node is connected to one sink node directly. We evaluated the proposed sensing system with a set of experiments for three subjects in a model house. The experimental result shows that the averaged recognition rate of user identification is 81.3% for three persons. and perfect entering/exiting behavior detection performance.
