An ultrasonic test method, as a nondestructive test is applied to ensure the clad interface quality assessment. According to the reference codes and standards, not only korea Industrial Standard(KS) but also American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) Standard, ultrasonic examination procedures use the pulse-echo, A-scan, back reflection signal drop method and/or side drilled reference hole used to establish the acceptance criteria of clad material test. But the variety of bonding materials and sizes makes it difficult to produce the reference blocks, or thus the criteria. In order to overcome these practical difficulties, new ultrasonic testing criterion is suggested. In this new method, the theoretical interface reflection signal amplitude level is calculated and suggested as an acceptance criteria with the back reflection signal set to 100% FSH(Full Screen Height) which is based on acoustic impedance mismatch at the clad interface for the explosive clad ultrasonic inspection. Applicability of suggested criterion, for the explosive clad Fe-Naval Brass with different bonding quality is confirmed to the pre-existed KS and ASTM specifications and verified by using SEM (Seanning Electron Microscope) micrograph. The results obtained by the suggested method is more conservative than the results according to the KS B 0234 and ASTM A 578 specifications The suggested method could be applicable to any other combination of explosive clad ultrasonic inspection.

The amplitude of a back-wall echo depends on the reflection coefficient of the interface between a transducer and a test material when using contact pulse-echo ultrasonic testing. A couplant is used to transmit ultrasonic energy across the interface, but has an influence on the amplitude of the pulse-echo signal. To investigate the couplant effect on pulse-echo ultrasonic testing, back-wall echoes are measured by using various couplants made of water and glycerine in a carbon and austenitic stainless steel specimens. The amplitude of the first back-wall echo and the apparent attenuation coefficient increases with the acoustic impedance of the couplant. The couplant having a higher value of the transmission coefficient is more effective for flaw detection. The reflection coefficient should be known in order to measure the attenuation coefficient of the test material.
Friction welding has emerged as a reliable process for high-production commercial applications with significant economic and technical advantages. But nondestructive test in friction weld was not clearly developed. Therefore the experimental verification is necessary in order to understand the characteristcs of the pulse echo effects according to various change in welding conditions. This paper presents an attempt to determine the relationship between the varios welding conditions and the coefficients of reflection using the ultrasonic pulse echo method in dissibilar metals friction weld. The new approach of calculating the coefficients of reflection based on measured amplitudes of the echoes is applied in this paper. These coefficients provides a single quantitative measurement which involves both acoustic energy reflected at the welded interface as well as transmitted across the interface. As a result, it was known that the quantitave relationship between welding conditions and the coefficients of reflection using the ultrasonic pulse echo exists in dissimilar metals friction weld.
Ultrasonic wave generation and propagation were modeled to simulate an ultrasonic test. A ray model was used for the modeling. Actual sound pressure distribution of the incident wave from an angle probe was analyzed using an ultrasonic visualization method to incorporate the actual sound pressure distribution in the model. In this method, the sound pressure was expressed by the density of rays and the reflection coefficient of ultrasonic beams. Reflection and mode conversion of rays were computed by the Snells law. Simulation programs for the problem of ultrasonic testing of a butt joint are built using this ray modeling. Simulation results for ultrasonic wave scattering from a defect and A-scan display in ultrasonic testing agreed with the actual experiment results.
Friction Welds are formed by the mechanisms of diffusion as well as mechanical inter-locking. The severe plastic flow at the interface by the forge action of the process brings the subsurface so close together that detection of any unbounded area becomes very difficult. No reliable method is available so fat to determine the weld quality nondestructively. The paper presents an attempt to determine weld strength quantitatively using the ultrasonic pulseecho method. The new approach calculates the coefficient of reflection based on measured amplitudes of the echoes. This coefficient provides a single quantitative measurement which involves both acoustic energy reflected at the welded interface as well as transmitted across the interface. As a result, it was known that the quantitative relationship between the coefficient and the weld strength (torsional strength) could be drawn.

This paper describes a new technique for thickness measurement of a very thin layer less than one-quarter of the wavelength of ultrasonic wave using ultrasonic pulse-echo method. The technique determines the thickness of a thin layer in a layered medium form the amplitudes of the total reflected waves from the back side layer of interst. Thickness of a very thin layer few inch deep inside the media can be measured without using a very high frequency ultrasonic transducer over 100MHz which must be used in the conventional techniques for the precision measurement of a thin layer. The method also requires no inversion process to extract the thickness from the waveform of the reflected waves, so that it makes possible on-line measurement of the thickness of the layer.

This paper describes a new technique for measurement of the displacement less than one-quarter of the wavelength of ultrasonic wave using ultrasonic pulse-echo method. The technique determines the displacement of a journal bearing from the amplitudes of the total reflected waves from the surface of journal inside the bearing. Vibration of journal bearing can be measured without using a very high frequency ultrasonic transduce over 100MHz which must be used in the conventional techniques for the precision measurement of a small displacement. The method also requires no inversion process to extract the thickness from the waveforms of the reflected waves, so that it makes possible on-line measurement of the vibration of journal bearing.

This paper proposes an ultrasonic method for measurement of linear and hysteretic interfacial stiffness of contacting surfaces between two steel plates subjected to nominal compression pressure. Interfacial stiffness was evaluated by the reflection and transmission coefficients obtained from three consecutive reflection waves from solid-solid surface using the shear wave. A nonlinear hysteretic spring model was proposed and used to define the quantitative interfacial stiffness of interface with the reflection and transmission coefficients. Acoustic model for 1-D wave propagation across interfaces is developed to formulate the reflection and transmission waves and to determine the linear and nonlinear hysteretic interfacial stiffness. Two identical plates are put together to form a contacting surface and pressed by bolt-fastening to measure interfacial stiffness at different states of contact pressure. It is found from experiment that the linear and hysteretic interfacial stiffness are successfully determined by the reflection and transmission coefficient at the contact surfaces through ultrasonic pulse-echo measurement.
Friction welding has been shown to have significant economic and technical advantages. However, one of the major concerns in using friction welding is the reliability of the weld quality. No reliable nondestructive test method is available at present for detecting weld quality, particularly in a production environment. Friction welds are formed by the mechanisms of diffusion as well as mechanical interlocking. The severe plastic flow at the interface by forge action of the process brings the subsurfaces so close together that detection of any unbonded area becomes very difficult. This paper presents an attempt to determine the friction weld strength quantitatively using the ultrasonic pulse-echo method. Instead of detecting flaws or cracks at the interface, the new approach calculates the coefficient of reflection based on measured amplitudes of the echoes. It has been finally confirmed that this coefficient could provide the quantitative relationship to the weld quality such as tensile strength, torsional strength, impact value, hardness, etc. So a new nondestructive analysis system of friction weld strength of dissimilar metals using an ultrasonic technique could be well developed.

In order to evaluate the characteristics of solid-solid contact interfaces, reflection or transmission techniques involving normal-incidence longitudinal waves are generally used. However, these normal-incidence techniques are of limited use in field applications such as in the inspection of welded parts. The oblique-incidence ultrasonic technique may be an alternative for overcoming these problems. However, in this technique, the mode conversion at the contact interfaces should be taken into account along with the normal and tangential interface stiffness. In this study, we have suggested a theoretical model for obliqueincidence ultrasonic waves at the contact interfaces and analyzed their reflection and transmission characteristics. Experimental results showed that the measured reflection coefficient and second harmonic wave agreed well with the suggested theoretical model. Consequently, the oblique-incidence technique can be a promising method for evaluating the characteristics of the contact interfaces.
