  • In this study, an automated ultrasonic testing system and post signal and image processing techniques are developed in order to construct ultrasonic flaw images in weldments. The automated ultrasonic testing system developed in the present study adopted an 8 channel pulser/receiver-ADC unit and a 2 axis motion driving unit and the post signal and image processing algorithms are built into the system program of the automated ultrasonic testing system.

  • Ultrasonic microscope has been used to detect the defects on surface or inner solid. Conventionally, it has used at a single operating frequency. The resolution and quality of the measured images are determined by a characteristic of the transducer of the ultrasonic microscope. The conventional ultrasonic microscope has been used envelope detector to detect the amplitude of reflected signal, but the changes in amplitude is not sensitive enough for specimen with microstructure that in phase. In this paper, we have studied multi-frequency depth resolution enhancement with ultrasonic reflection microscope for the reflectors of a stainless steel reference specimen and a reference calibration block to be used as the material in nuclear power plants for ISI, PSI. Increased depth resolution can be obtained by taking two, three-dimensional images at more that one frequency and numerically combining the results. As results of the experiment, we could get enhanced images with the rate of contrast in proportion and high quality signal distribution for the image to the changing rate of depth for the reflectors of the two kinds of specimens.

  • In domestic case, there are no results of corresponding researches for measuring external tendon force. The purpose of the present paper is therefore to measure external tendon force by using deriving ultrasonic method. For this purpose, we designed and manufactured wedges and test system, and measured ultrasonic pulse velocity and pulse amplitude. By using measured data, we tried to analyze the characteristics of tendon force, and to derive the relationship between tendon force and ultrasonic pulse velocity, finally to develop the technic of measuring system using ultrasonic pulse velocity. So tendon force-velocity relationship was proposed by equations, and those equations of which errors were 3.92~8.77% will be possible to adapt in-site.

  • The joint treatment of concrete is one of the technical problems in top down construction method. Joints created with the top down construction result in serious weakness from the aspects of both structural and water-barrier function. Ultrasonic method was used for the inspection of top down construction joints of column in SRC structure in this study. As a result it has been verified that the semi-direct measurement method is more effective than the other methods for detecting the voids of construction joints.

  • In this paper, a review of the current status, on the use of long range cylindrically guided wave modes, and their interaction with cracks and corrosion damage in pipe-like structures will be discussed. Applications of cylindrically guided ultrasonic wave modes have been developed for inspection of corrosion damage in pipelines at chemical plants, flow-accelerated corrosion damage (wall thinning) in feedwater piping, and circumferential stress corrosion cracks in PWR steam generator tubes. It has been demonstrated that this inspection technique can be employed on a variety of piping geometries (diameters from 1 in. to 3 ft, and wall thickness from 0.1 to 6 in.) and a propagation distance of 100 meters or more is sometimes feasible. This technique can also be used in the inspection of inaccessible or buried regions of pipes and tubes.

  • It has not been performed to inspect the underclad cracking in Korea nuclear plant since there is no Code Requirements for inspection. However, underclad cracks in nuclear pressure vessels were reported firstly in 1970. The objection of this study is to be established the ultrasonic inspection techniques for underclad cracking. The ultrasonic inspection of bimetalic stainless steel weld is very difficult by high attenuation and multiple scattering at weld surface and weld/base metal interface. The various inspection methods using 70 refracted longitudinal wave, 50/70 tandem transducer, 45and60 single shear wave are compared. Experiments on limited specimens applied same condition to nuclear pressure vessels shows that 70 refracted longitudinal wave method is the best one for the detection of underclad cracks. 50/70 tandem transducer using SPOT(Satellite Pulse Observation Technique) is more effective for underclad crack sizing than other sizing methods.

  • US NRC issued rulemaking of 10CFR50.55a to perform the Perservice and Inservice inspection for Reactor Vessel Head Penetration Nozzle of US Nuclaer plant. The rulemaking was required the EPRI Demonstration to verify the NDE technique performing special Ultrasonic examination. In order to meet this requirement, the UT and ECT procedures was demonstrated and the NDE personnel were qualified by EPRI. In this paper, the NDE technique and analysis method are described the Preservice inspection for the Palo Verde #1/2/3 Replacement Reactor Vessel Head Penetration Nozzle using the qualified procedures and personnel.
