Measuring ultrasonic TOF using Zynq baremetal Multiprocessing (Zynq 기반 baremetal 멀티프로세싱에 의한 초음파 TOF 측정)

  • In this research the TOF (time of flight) of ultrasonic signal is measured using Xilinx's Zynq SoC (system on chip). The TOF is calculated from the difference between periods during which RF (radio frequency) and ultrasonic signals come across a distance, and then travelling distance is obtained by multiplying the TOF by the ultrasonic speed in the air. For this purpose, a ultrasonic pulse is generated from a Zynq's internal ADC, a FIR (finite impulse response) filter, and a Kalman filter. And a RF reference pulse is generated from a RF interface. Based on baremetal multiprocessing, the Kalman filter and the RF interface are c-programmed on Zynq's dual processor cores, with other components fabricated on Zynq's FPGA. With this HW/SW co-design, both lower resource utilization and much smaller designing period were obtained than the HW design. As a design tool, Vivado IDE(integrated design environment) is used to design the whole signal processing system in hierarchical block diagrams.

  • Most of present ultrasonic distance measurement technologies are based on the measurement of the TOF (: Time of Flight), the elapsed time during which the ultrasonic wave travels from its transmitter to receiver, to evaluate the distance the wave travels during that time. In this case, high distance measurement accuracy requires an accurate measurement of TOF. In order to acquire an accurate TOF, this paper proposes a method that produces the TOF by using a mathematical model of the received signal obtained from a mathematical model of ultrasonic transducer. The proposed method estimates the arrival time of the received signal retrospectively by comparing its wave form obtained after triggering point with its mathematical model in the sense of least-square. Experimental result shows that the effect of variation of triggering point can be decreased by implementing the proposed method.

  • The advantage of ultrasonic burning rate measurement of solid propellant is measuring burning rates with wide range of pressure in a single test. In the ultrasonic method, instantaneous thickness of solid propellants as function of pressure or time were measured using time of flight(TOF) of ultrasonic signals. So, uncertainties of the measured burning rates by ultrasonic method have to evaluate with variation of pressure, TOF and initial propellant thickness. In this study, we evaluated uncertainties of ultrasonic method for measuring burning rates on the types 317 and the 318 propellants.

  • The reaction of fullerene$[C_{60}]$ and 3-chloroperoxy benzoic acid in 1,2-dichlorobenzene was monitored by high resolution ultrasonic spectroscopy and the product of reaction by fullerene $[C_{60}]$ and 3-chloroperoxy benzoic acid in 1,2-dichlorobenzene was characterized using MALDI-TOF-MS spectra.

  • In order to acquire an accurate TOF, this paper proposes a method that produces TOF by using a mathematical model for the envelope of the received signal obtained from a system dynamic model of ultrasonic transducer.   • The evaluation of clamping condition has been regarded as the main issue in the safety-maintenance of the clamped high-tension bolts. For this, this paper proposes a method to estimate the axial stress by measuring the TOF (Time-Of-Flight) of ultrasonic wave, which is based on the acoustoelasticity or the dependency of sound speed on the stress. In this method, however, the variation of sound speed within the range of stress induced under the field condition is very small, and thus the accuracy of the TOF measurement is important. We adopted the phase detection method using tone-burst ultrasonic wave to measure the precise TOF. In order to verify the usefulness of the proposed method experiments are carried out and the results were compared with the stress measured by the strain gage. The results show good agreement with each other, and from these we can conclude that the proposed method is highly useful fnr the evaluation of clamping condition in the clamped high-tension bolts.

  • In this research, a high-performance ultrasonic positioning system is proposed to track the positions of an indoor mobile object. Composed of an ultrasonic sender (mobile object) and a receiver (anchor), the system employs three ultrasonic time-off-flights (TOFs) and trilateration to estimate the positions of the object with an accuracy of sub-centimeter. On the other hand, because ultrasonic waves are interfered by temperature, wind and various obstacles obstructing the propagation while propagating in air, ultrasonic pulse debounce technique and Kalman filter were applied to TOF and position calculation, respectively, to compensate for the interference and to obtain more accurate moving object position. To perform tasks in real time, ultrasonic signals are processed full-digitally with a Zynq SoC, and as a software design tool, Vivado IDE(integrated design environment) is used to design the whole signal processing system in hierarchical block diagrams. And, a hardware/software co-design is implemented, where the digital circuit portion is designed in the Zynq's fpga and the software portion is c-coded in the Zynq's processors by using the baremetal multiprocessing scheme in which the c-codes are distributed to dual-core processors, cpu0 and cpu1. To verify the usefulness of the proposed system, experiments were performed and the results were analyzed, and it was confirmed that the moving object could be tracked with accuracy of sub-cm.

  • Synthesis of fullerene oxides by fullerenes [$C_{60},\;C_{70}$] and several oxidants such as benzoylperoxide, trichloroisocyanuric acid, methyltrioxorhenium(VII), iodosobenzene, phosphorous pentoxide take place under ultrasonic condition at room temperature. The MALDI-TOF MS,UV-visible spectra and HPLC analysis confirmed that the products of fullerenes oxidation are [$C_{60}(O)_n$], ($n=1{\sim}3$ or n=1) and [$C_{70}(O)_n$], ($n=1{\sim}2$ or n=1). As compared with the reactivity of epoxidation of fullerenes [$C_{60},\;C_{70}$], the reaction rate of $C_{70}$ was lower than that of $C_{60}$ under same reaction condition.

  • The cleavage of fullerene oxides with several aromatic amines such as 4-nitroaniline, 3-nitroaniline, 4-isopropylaniline in the present of $FeCl_3$ occurred under ultrasonic irradiation in air at $25{\sim}43^{\circ}C$. The aminated fullerenes were confirmed by MALDI-TOF-MS and UV-vis spectra.

Feasibility of Ultrasonic Log Sorting in Manufacturing Structural Lamination from Japanese Cedar Logs

  • Because Japanese cedar shows lower mechanical performance, glued-laminated timber (glulam) can be a better way to utilize Japanese cedar for structural purpose. However, low yield of higher grade lamination from log makes it difficult to design structural glulam. This study was aimed to increase the yield of higher grade lamination and provide higher efficiency of manufacturing structural lamination by ultrasonic log sorting technology. Logs were sorted by an existing log grading rule regulated by Korea Forest Research Institute (KFRI). It was found that the KFRI log grading rule contributed to finding better logs in viewpoint of the volumetric yield and it can reduce the number of rejected lumber by visual grading. However, it could not identify better logs to produce higher-grade products. To find an appropriate log-sorting-method for structural products, log diameter and ultrasonic time of flight (TOF) for the log were considered as factors to affect mechanical performance of resulting products. However, it was found that influence of log diameter on mechanical performance of resulting products was very small. The TOF showed a possibility to sort logs by mechanical performance of resulting products even though a coefficient of correlation was not strong (R = 0.6). In a case study, the log selection based on the ultrasonic TOF of the log increased the yield of the outermost tension lamination (E8 or better grade, KS F 3021) from 2.6% to 12.5% and reduced LTE5 (lower than E5 grade) lamination from 43.6% to 10.3%, compared with the existing KFRI log grading rule.
