  • This paper investigates nonlinear response of 51 laterally loaded rigid piles in sand. Measured response of each pile test was used to deduce input parameters of modulus of subgrade reaction and the gradient of the linear limiting force profile using elastic-plastic solutions. Normalised load - displacement and/or moment - rotation curves and in some cases bending moment and displacement distributions with depth are provided for all the pile tests, to show the effect of load eccentricity on the nonlinear pile response and pile capacity. The values of modulus of subgrade reaction and the gradient of the linear limiting force profile may be used in the design of laterally loaded rigid piles in sand.

  • The objective of the research stated herein is to observe th elastic and inelastic behaviors and ultimate capacity of 1 : 5 scale 3-story reinforced concrete frame. Pushover tests were performed to 1:5 scale 3-story reinforced concrete frames without and with infilled masonry. To simulate the earthquake effect, the lateral force distribution was maintained to be an inverted triangle by using the whiffle tree. From the results of tests, the relations between the total lateral load and the roof drift, the distribution of column shears, the relation between story shear and story drift, and the angular rotations at the critical portions of structures were obtained. The effects of infilled masonry are investigated with regards to the stiffness, strength, and ductility of structures. Final collapse modes of structures with and without infilled masonry are compared.

  • The bond performance of prestressing strands is still not well understood and is still in controversy on the validity of the test results up to today, although it is a basic information to desing the prestressed pretensioned concrete beams. Different transfer length has been found for a product of the same company, but of the different production methods and factories in the United States. It is necessary to determine optimum transfer bond length of the domestic stands because the ultimate flexural and shear capacity in a section of prestressed concrete beams are evaluated under the assumption that the anchorage bond failure shall not happen. The transfer lenght of low-relaxation, Gr 270, and 1/2" seven-wire prestressing strands from four domestic companies will be evaluated by the concrete strain method. The recent concept of the 95% Maximum Average Strain Method suggested by Russel et al. will be considered to obtain the transfer length of domestic strands. It will be also evaluated if the domestic strands are conform to ACI 318-95.8-95.

  • This paper presents the effect of diaphragm spacing ratio(depth to span) on behavior and capacity of composite steel-concrete structures of sandwich system. Numerical analysis has been performed variety diaphragm ratio, behavior and load condition. As a results of this study, in case of shear behavior and concentrated load, the capacity of structure such as yielding and ultimate load improve according to diaphragm ratio because of concrete confining effect by steel plate and stress redistribution by diaphragm. But in case of bending behavior or uniform load, it proved that diaphragm ratio don't influence on behavior and capacity of composite structures of sandwich system.

  • Substantial experimental and theoretical work exists on the bond characteristics of FRP-concrete adhesive joints. Experimental studies show that the bond strength cannot always increase with an increase in the bond length, and that the ultimate strength is strongly influenced by the concrete strength. To solve this feature, analytic solutions based on fracture mechanics are widely used, and the local shear stress-slip curve with a softening branch is known as more rational model. The analytic solution, however, cannot describe various shapes of model curve. In this study, numerical method using interface element is introduced to express various shapes of model curve. Characteristics of adhesive joint is investigated for the shapes of the model curve and their parameters. And the numerical solutions are compared with the test results of CFRP sheet adhesive joints.

  • This paper deal with cause and analysis about case of collapsed reinforced-soil retaining wall. The analysis of the cause was carried through experimentation, slop stability analysis and literature study. The experimentation treated the large direct shear test, the hydraulic conductivity test and the other basic test through backfill extracted from collapsed reinforced-soil retaining wall. The ultimate tensile strength was established by rib tensile strength test of geogrid. The analysis of internal and external stability of reinforced-soil retaining wall was performed on the basis of parameters. The result of analysis, reinforced-soil retaining wall and the slope at the dry season are stable. However, the factors that fine-grained soil at hydrometer test exceed the standard of the design, rainfall duration is too long at the time of collapse and monthly pricipitation is heavy are cause of the collapse.

  • For completing an fully optimized and prefabricated substructure system of bridge, developing pier of precast segment PSC which equip the connection structure of shear resistance and precast foundation are conducted previously. Specimens of coping of bridge were developed and customized, and experiments were performed. The result of the experiment through the result from a reliable non-linear analysis program (RCAHEST) were compared and analyzed and evaluated the stability and ultimate behavior of coping of precast pier.

  • In case of strong earthquake, upper-sheat wall lowe-frame structures show the weak-story failure at lower part. Where we should guarantee sufficient strength, energy dissipation capacity and ductility. In this study, a typical structure was selected for a prototype and four 1:2.5 scaled models, representing the subassemblages including the interior column and the deep beam, were constructed. Experimental parameters include transverse reinforcement ratio and axial force. The non- linear behavior of the subassemblages subjected to the cyclic lateral displac-ement were evaluated through investigation of the ultimate strength, ductility, load-deformation characteristics. From the results of the tests on 4 specimens, it is concluded that the strength increased as the axial force increased and the ductility increased as the transverse reinforcement ratio increased.

  • For the replacement of deteriorated concrete decks or wider-span slab, composite slab could be very attactive due to higher stiffness and strength. Based on the previous research, a modified I-beam composite hollow slab was suggested. In order to investigate the static flexural behavior of the proposed composite slab and to suggest its flexural design method, experiments were performed. Judging from the tests, a composite slab with I-beam having a semi-circle hole showed better structural performance. The effect of web details on the flexural stiffness was negligible. Flexural stiffness, ultimate strength, and ductility of the composite slabs were significantly greater than the RC slab due to composite action. While the failure of the RC slab was punching shear failure, the composite hollow slab showed flexural cracking and failure by yielding of the I-beams and crushing of concrete. Therefore, the current one-way design concept is appropriate for the design of I-beam composite hollow slab.

  • Perforated steel beams can be optimised by increased beam depth and the moment of inertia combined with a reduced web thickness, favouring the use of original I-section beams. The designers are often confronted with situations where optimisation cannot be carried out effectively, taking account of the buckling risk at web posts, moment-shear transfers and local plastic deformations on the transverse holes of the openings. The purpose of this study is to suggest solutions for reducing these failure risks of tested optimal designed beams under applying loads in a self-reacting frame. The design method for the beams is the hunting search optimisation technique, and the design constraints are implemented from BS 5950 provisions. Therefore, I have aimed to explore the strengthening effects of reinforced openings with ring stiffeners, welded vertical simple plates on the web posts and horizontal plates around the openings on the ultimate load carrying capacities of optimally designed perforated steel beams. Test results have shown that compared to lateral stiffeners, ring and vertical stiffeners significantly increase the loadcarrying capacity of perforated steel beams.
