  • Following a treatment with edible oils and/or washing, the tensile properties of vulcanized rubber were measured to assess the effect of the sorbed edible oil. Rubber soiled with soybean oil, after 8 weeks storage in a 30$^{\circ}C$ incubator, retained 61% of its original strength, and rubber soiled and washed retained the 73%. The strength of the rubber soiled with oil decreased remarkably during the first 2 weeks. After repeating this soiling and/or washing 7 times, the soiled rubber had only 16% of its original strength, the rubber soiled and washed had 45%. In all cases, breaking elongations were not decreased as much as tensile strengths; therefore , more of the elasticity of the rubber remained than did the strength. From these results it is concluded that washing after soiling with oils is very helpful in maintaining the strength of rubber. In this study, three different surfactant solutions, AS, AE and AS/AE, were used. In the AS solution, the contact angle of the soybean oil was greater and the work of the detergency was the smaller than in either the AE or the AS/AE solution, the loss of the strength of the rubber washed in AS solution did not decrease significantly. These results suggest that rolling-up, emulsification and solubilization also participate in the removal of oil from rubber.

  • A 3D printer based on laser powder deposition (LPD), also known as DED (direct energy deposition), has been developed for fabricating metal parts. The printer uses a ytterbium fiber laser (1070nm, 1kW) and is equipped with an Ar purge chamber, a three-dimensional translation stage and a powder feeding system composed of a powder chamber and delivery nozzles. To demonstrate the performance of the printer, a tapered cylinder of 320mm in height has been fabricated successfully using Ti-6Al-4V powders. The process parameters including the laser output power, the scan speed, and the powder feeding rate have been optimized. A 3D printed test specimen shows mechanical properties (yield strength, ultimate tensile strength, and elongation) exceeding the criteria to employed in a variety of Ti alloy applications.

  • Austempered Ductile Iron (ADI) castings having various chemical composition and heat treatment conditions were investigated. Especially, this study was investigated the influence of various parameters on austempering temperature and alloying elements. The addition of Mo, Cu, and Ni individually or combined in these alloys also investigated. The alloying elements influence the austempering reaction, the microstructures, mechanical properties and amount of retained austenite. In this study, the mechanical properties (ultimate tensile strength(UTS), hardness, elongation) are analysed to show the relationship between alloying elements, austempering temperatures and amount of retained austenite. The amount of retained austenite was the range of 15 - 40%. In case of the alloy to witch Mo, Cu, and Ni was added, the amount of retained austenite was the largest at a constant austempering temperature.

  • The hydrides in cladding affect the corrosion and tensile properties. In this study corrosion and tensile properties were evaluated with varying the hydrogen concentration. The charged hydrogen contents were ranged from 200 to 1000 ppm. The corrosion rate in water and LiOH solution increases with the hydrogen concentration. The hydride did not affect the corrosion mechanism in the pre-transition region, but in the post-transition region the corrosion rate was accelerated. Cladding E contained higher Niobium content was slowly accelerated compared with other claddings. The yield and ultimate strengths were independent on the hydrogen content. However, the total elongation decreased gradually with increasing the hydrogen content. SEM observation of fracture surface showed that an average of depth of voids decreased with increasing the hydrogen content and small secondary crack are observed.

  • A series of investigations for Austempered Ductile Iron (ADI) castings were carried out by using the specimens with various chemical compositions and heat treatment conditions. The rolling wear characteristics of alloyed austempered ductile irons under an unlubricated dry rolling condition was evaluated by the Amsler type test with 9.09% sliding ratio. Generally, the wear amount was increased with the austempering temperature and decreased when the hardness of the matrix was higher. The alloying elements also influenced the austempering reaction, the microstructure and the mechanical properties. In this study, the mechanical properties (i.e.) ultimate tensile strength (UTS), hardness, elongation) and the wear resistance are analysed to show the relationship between the alloying elements and the austempering temperatures. Mo, Cu and Ni are alloyed individually or in combination. It has been found that when Cu and Ni alloyed individually to a casting, the wear amount is increased than others with elements alloyed in combination. The amount of rolling wear loss was decreased when Mo was alloyed in cast iron, individually or in combination.

  • Two different casting speeds of 60 and 80mm/min are adopted to determine the effect of casting speed on the microstructure and mechanical properties of Al-Mg-Si/Al hybrid material prepared by duo-casting. The obtained hybrid material has a uniform and straight macro-interface between the pure Al side and the Al-Mg-Si alloy side at both casting speeds. When the casting speed is increased to 80mm/min, the size of primary α phases in Al-Mg-Si alloy decreases, without change of shape. Although the Al-Mg-Si alloy produced at higher casting speed of 80mm/min shows much higher ultimate tensile strength (UTS) and 0.2 % proof stress and lower elongation, along with higher bending strength compared to the case of the 60mm/min in casting speed, the tensile properties and bending strength of the hybrid material, which are similar to those of pure Al, are the same regardless of the increase of casting speed. Despite the different casting speeds, deformation and fracturing in hybrid materials are observed only on the pure Al side. This indicates that the macro-interface is well-bonded, allowing it to endure tensile and bending deformation in all hybrid materials.

  • Ti-alloys have high specific strength and are widely used for the filed of space aeronautics plant. However, it is difficult to process Ti-Alloys due to its high yield strength and it cannot raise the machining speed because it has a possibility of catching fire while processing. In order to reduce the number of processes for the Ti-alloys, the researches related to Additive Manufacturing(AM) have been actively carried out at the moment. As for the initial stage of AM market related to Ti-alloys, it started to use the raw material of powder metal, and it is currently being developed based on welding. In this study, Interpass peening reduced the size of the primary ${\beta}$ grain in the z-axis direction, increased the nucleation site of ${\alpha}-colony$, and decreased the length and width of ${\alpha}$ laths as though interpass rolling. Interpass peening leads to an increase in yield/ultimate tensile strength without decrease elongation, resulting decrease in anisotropy of the material.

  • This study reports the influence of gadolinium (Gd) addition on mechanical and corrosion properties of 2205 duplex stainless steel. In all alloys produced, regardless of the initial Gd content, Gd-based inclusions were well distributed in the duplex stainless steel matrix. As the Gd content increased from 0 wt% to 0.19 wt%, the ultimate tensile strength and hardness of the alloy increased from 630 MPa to 977 MPa and from 57 to 61, respectively, while elastic modulus, tensile elongation and impact energy of the alloy decreased. The critical crevice temperatures of Alloy1, Alloy2 and Alloy3 were $20^{\circ}C$, $20^{\circ}C$ and $15^{\circ}C$, respectively.
