The aim of this paper was to study the influence of the footing shape and the effect of the roughness of the foundation base on the bearing capacity of shallow foundations on rock masses. For this purpose the finite difference method was used to analyze the bearing capacity of various types and states of rock masses under the assumption of Hoek-Brown failure criterion, for both plane strain and axisymmetric model, and considering smooth and rough interface. The results were analyzed based on a sensitivity study of four varying parameters: foundation width, rock material constant (mo), uniaxial compressive strength and geological strength index. Knowing how each parameter influences the bearing capacity depending on the footing shape (circular vs strip footing) and the footing base interface roughness (smooth vs rough), two correlation factors were developed to estimate the percentage increase of the ultimate bearing capacity as a function of the footing shape and the roughness of the footing base interface.

In this study, estimate solution of ultimate axial capacity for axial loaded pile is proposed using step-wised shape. This is verified for effective appling on realistic factor by calibration chamber tests. Estimation method of ultimate axial capacity in this study is verified by calibration chamber test. The results of ultimate axial capacity through this proposed method have sufficiently low standard derivations and COVs. Also, this is verified through test that method is similarly resulted with measured values.
Granular compaction piles increase the load bearing capacity of the soft ground and reduce the settlement of fecundation built on the reinforced soil. Also the granular compaction piles accelerate the consolidation of soft ground using the granular materials such as sand, gravel, stone etc. However, this method is one of unuseful methods in Korea. In the present study, the estimation procedure for the ultimate bearing capacity of randomly installed granular compaction pile group is proposed. Also, carbon rod tests have been peformed for verifying the group effect of granular compaction piles and the behavior characteristics such as bulging failure zone on granular compaction piles. From the test results, it is found that bulging failure shape of granular compaction piles was conical shape and the ultimate bearing capacity increased as the spacing of piles became gradually narrow. Also, from the proposed method in this study, the optimal locations of granular compaction piles with various installed cases are analyzed. The results were shown that the bearing capacity was increased in the case concentrated on the central part of pile group.
Laboratory model test with soft silty ground (ML) and polluted silty ground with wastewater and factory waste oil ($ML_p$) was conducted and the applicability of changes of bearing capacity from the increase of pollutants was compared and analyzed with existing findings. As silty ground polluted with wastewater and factory waste oil had increased contents of pollutants, plasticization of ground was fostered compared to soft silt ground due to the influence of pollutants, and characteristics of ground strength decreased. Critical surcharge value of soft silty ground $q_{cr}=4.14c_u$, ultimate bearing capacity value $q_{ult}=9.53c_u$, critical surcharge value of silty ground polluted with wastewater and factory waste oil $q_{cr}=1.78c_u$ and ultimate bearing capacity value $q_{ult}=4.39c_u$. Critical surcharge and ultimate bearing capacity of silty ground polluted with wastewater and factory waste oil were less than those of soft silty ground. It meant that shearing resistance due to the increase of pollutants decreased and rather a smaller value was obtained.
The scale effect should be considered to determine the bearing capacity and settlement of footings from plate-load test, because of the size difference between a footing and a loading plate. To analyze characteristics of bearing capacity and settlement according to the difference of loading plate sizes, model tests were performed with four different sizes of square plate, which are B=10, 15, 20, and 25cm respectively, on five different kinds of subsoils. Test results showed that the ultimate bearing capacity of a footing on the sand did not increase proportional to the traditional formula and the bearing capacity on the clay also increased a little with increasing the size of loading plate. The settlement of test plate on the sand did not increase as the traditional formula of Terzaghi and Peck (1967), and the settlement on the clay also did not increase proportional to the traditional formula.
Use of geotextile as reinforcement material to improve the weak soil is a popular method these days. Tensile strength of geotextile and the soil-geotextile interaction are the major factors which influence the improvement of the soil. Change in fine content within the sand can change the interface behavior between soil and geotextile. In the present paper, the bearing capacity of unreinforced and geotextile-reinforced sand with different percentages of fines has been studied. A series of model tests have been carried out and the load settlement curves are obtained. The ultimate load carrying capacity of unreinforced and reinforced sand with different percentages of fines is compared. The interface behavior of sand and geotextile with various percentages of fines is also studied. It is observed that sand having around 5% of fine is suitable or permissible for bearing capacity improvement due to the application of geosynthetic reinforcement. The effectiveness of the reinforcement in load carrying capacity improvement decreases due to the addition of excessive amount of fines.
The bearing mechanism of tunnel-type anchorage (TTA) for suspension bridges is studied. Model tests are conducted using different shapes of plug bodies, which are circular column shape and circular truncated cone shape. The results show that the plug body of the latter shape possesses much larger bearing capacity, namely 4.48 times at elastic deformation stage and 4.54 times at failure stage compared to the former shape. Numerical simulation is then conducted to understand the mechanical and structural responses of plug body and surrounding rock mass. The mechanical parameters of the surrounding rock mass are firstly back-analyzed based on the monitoring data. The calculation laws of deformation and equivalent plastic strain show that the numerical simulation results are rational and provide subsequent mechanism analysis with an established basis. Afterwards, the bearing mechanism of TTA is studied. It is concluded that the plug body of circular truncated cone shape is able to take advantage of the material strength of the surrounding rock mass, which greatly enhances its bearing capacity. The ultimate bearing capacity of TTA, therefore, is concluded to be determined by the material strength of surrounding rock mass. Finally, recommendations for TTA design are proposed and discussed.

To find axial and lateral responses of impact-driven H piles in embankment(SM), the H piles are instrumented with electric strain gages, dynamic load test is performed during driving, and then the damage of strain gages is checked simultaneously. Axially and laterally static load tests are performed on the same piles after one to nine days as well. Then load-settlement behavior is measured. Furthermore, to find the set-up effect in H pile, No. 4, 16, 26, and R6 piles are restriked about 1, 2, and 14 days after driving. As results, ram height and pile capacity obtained from impact driving control method become 80cm and 210.3∼242.3ton, respectively. At 15 days after driving, allowable bearing capacity by CAPWAP analysis, which 2.5 of the factor of safety is applied for ultimate bearing capacity, increases 10.8%. Ultimate bearing capacity obtained from axially static load test is 306∼338ton. This capacity is 68.5∼75.7% at yield force of pile material and is 4∼4.5 times of design load. Allowable bearing capacity using 2 of the factor of safety is 153∼169ton. Initial stiffness response of the pile is 27.5ton/mm. As the lateral load increases, the horizontal load-settlement behaves linearly to which the lateral load reaches up to 17ton. This reason is filled with sand in the cavity formed between flange and web during pile driving. As the result of reading with electric strain gages, flange material of pile is yielded at 19ton in horizontal load. Thus allowable load of this pile material is 9.5ton when the factor of safety is 2.0. Allowable lateral displacement of this pile corresponding to this load is 23∼36mm in embankment.

In Korea, drilled shaft are generally socketed into rock. Driven pile has environmental problems such as vibration and noise. Therefore, applications of the drilled shaft are increasing in Korea. In this paper, static load test data of the rock socketed drilled shaft at Gwangandaero and Suyeong 3hogyo are analyzed. The bearing capacities from field test data and theoretical formula are compared and analyzed. From this study, design approaches for drilled shafts in Korea are examined and several suggestions are proposed.
The axial compressive strength of unidirectional FRP is generally quite lower than its axial tensile strength. This fact decreases the advantages of FRP as main load bearing member in engineering structure. In order to restrain the lateral expansion and splitting of GFRP, and accordingly heighten its axial compressive bearing capacity, a project that to confine GFRP pole with surrounding CFRP sheet is suggested in the present study. The Experiment on the CFRP sheet confined GFRP poles showed that a combined structure of high bearing capacity was attained. Basing on the experiment research a theoretical iterative calculation approach is suggested to predict the ultimate axial compressive stress of the combined structure, and the predicted results agree well with the experimental results. Then the influences of geometrical parameters on the ultimate axial compressive stress of the combined structure are also analyzed basing on this approach.
