Purpose: Increasing numbers of Koreans have immigrated to the United States since the late 1960s. The first generation of Korean immigrants or their parents become old and institutionalized in American nursing home setting. Although the Korean elders would experience many cultural differences in the nursing home, no study to date has investigated their everyday lives on how they live through their later lives within a different cultural environment from their own. Methods: Using ethnographic methodology, the purpose of this paper was to illustrate Korean residents' experiences and daily lives in a nursing home located in an east coastal city in the U.S. Participant observation, filed notes, semi-structured interviews were utilized by means of data collection. Eighteen Korean residents were observed, and five of them and two nurses participated in informal qualitative interviews. Results: The overriding theme from the findings is "thrown in a different world." Three sub-themes include "constant struggles in making themselves understood", "dealing with culturally inappropriate nursing care," and "maintaining their own ways of life". Conclusions: The discovered themes reflect culturally isolated lives of the participants and open a venue for designing a culturally congruent nursing care for Korean elders living in the U.S. nursing homes.

최근 최첨단 IT 기술을 선도하는 USN은 사회 전반에 걸쳐 활용되고 있다. u-City, u-Home, u-Education, u-Farming 과 같은 다양한 USN 응용 서비스가 진행되고 있으며 도시를 지나 농촌에서도 유비쿼터스 기술이 '제 2의 농업 혁명'을 불러 오고 있다. 유비쿼터스 농업은 가축이나, 농작물 등의 생산 단계에서 USN 기술을 적용해 기온, 습도, 조도와 같은 생육 환경을 최적으로 조성하여 생산성과 안전성을 높이는데 있으며 기존 농업 환경에 많은 변화를 줄 수 있다. 본 논문에서 제안하는 이식형 소형 센서 노드는 센서 네트워크용 SoC(System-on-Chip)을 이용하여 설계하였으며 닭의 흉부에 이식하여 몸체의 체온을 직접적으로 모니터링 할 수 있도록 하였다. 또한 이를 이용한 여러 활용 방안 및 추가적인 고려사항에 대하여 논하였다.

최근, 스마트 그리드, 스마트 홈 네트워크, 유비쿼터스 컴퓨팅 등의 분야에서 필요한 정보를 수집 및 가공하여 실시간 양방향으로 교환하고, 제어 및 감시하는 스마트 정보 모니터링 기술에 대한 연구를 계속 해 왔다. 본 논문에서는 에너지, U-Farm, 차량정보 및 홈 네트워크에 관한 스마트 정보 모니터링 기술의 응용 제품 및 최근 동향들을 알아본다. 특히, 스마트 그리드의 핵심부분인 스마트 미터와 실시간으로 정보를 교환하는 구글 파워미터, 유비쿼터스 농업을 위한 실시간 모니터링 시스템, 차량상태 정보를 위한 실시간 모니터링 시스템, 저전력, 저가격의 ZigBee 기반 스마트 정보 모니터링 기술 응용 및 관련사례에 대하여 기술한다. 마지막으로 스마트그리드 제주 실증단지 구축현황에 대하여 기술한다.

This study was carried out to assess the degree of cognitive impairment and health status for the aged people in seoul area. The subjects were selected 117 aged at the nursing home and 101 residents from the community. To assess the cognitive function, Mini-Mental Status Examination(MMSE-K) and the assessement tool of health status for the elderly which was developed by Lee(1989) used to check the health status. The followings are the results of the Survey Study; 1. The elderly who were assessed as a cognitive impairment status was $47.9\%$ of the nursing home people and $42.6\%$ of the ordinary community residency elderly. 2. Health status of the community residency elderly was much better condition than the status of the nursing home residency elderly. 3. There was a significant relationship between the degree of cognitive impairment and the physical health status.

As the sensors and communication technology get advance, the remote health diagnosis for patients and senior persons at home are possible now without visiting doctors in hospitals. A low-power ubiquitous health check device was developed adapting Real-Time Embedded Linux is developed. This ubiquitous device is consisted of three sensors. The wrist type health checking terminal acquires periodically the health data by using a blood pressure sensor, a pulse sensor and a body temperature sensor. It transmits the health data to the access point located at the home center through the ZigBee wireless communication modem. This health data collector or access point device sends the data again to the main server operated in a hospital or health care organization. The health server control continuously the input data and sends an alarm signal to the assigned. doctor and responsible persons using cellular SMS when any dangerous events occur. This wrist type health check device has an embedded linux OS using Intel PAX255 MPU. The developed U-Health system is applicable for checking patients health in remote at home. And their family or related persons in remote site can check the patients health status at any time. They can be assured by receiving SMS record and alarm of emergency case which is transmitted from the health server.

The home network, contributing to improve the quality of life in dwelling, has expanded its installation and use in past years, but the elderly care system supporting self-reliance is not fully prepared. Although the aging society in Korea is progressing rapidly, inducting and spreading home network system is still required supporting of 'Aging in Place' for the elderly. This research is based the survey of spatial characteristics of housing of the elderly. Also, the research studied the technical level and policy of home network in domestic and abroad and analyze the professional view of experts in the home network field, as a result, suggested methods of building and activating the home network system.

In the last decade many advanced home network services have been provided by construction industry, and many researches on the area have been carried out. One of the problems we are confronted with is that we do not have a standard classification scheme for home network services yet. In this paper a more stable classification scheme is suggested after comparative analysis of many different schemes in previous researches. More commonly highly attended service categories in the scheme is selected, and those are examined in terms of how commonly they are supplied by construction industry. In the later part of this paper the current home network building certification code is reviewed if the code complies with the highly attended categories in the classification scheme suggested in this paper. Some ideas to improve the current certification code is suggested by adding or optionally adding the highly attended categories.

The purpose of this study was to examine influence of home energy cost on housing cost burden of Korean and U.S. monthly renter households in urban areas and to explore influences of household and housing characteristics on their home energy cost burden. Microdata for this research was extracted from the 2011 Korean Household Budget Survey and 2009 American Housing Survey. Monthly renter households in urban areas were initially grouped based on household income, followed by a detailed analysis of housing and home energy cost. Findings are as follows: (1) The maximum ratio of home energy cost to household house hold income in Korea was 49% compared to 83% in the US; (2) Energy cost to income ratio were found to have significant influences on housing cost burden and lower income households' housing cost burden was found more vulnerable to their energy cost; (3) In general, the energy cost burden of low-income renter households in Korea tended to be influenced by household size, the number of household members staying at home during daytime hours and housing unit size. The energy cost burden of low-income renter households in the U.S. tended to be influenced by home structure type, size and age, the householder's age, race, educational attainment, the household size, number of wage earners per household, income, and the number of household members between 7 and 17 years of age.

본 논문에서는 홈 환경에서의 사용자의 컨텍스트에 따라 지능적으로 반응하는 미디어 콘텐츠인 vrFlora 을 소개한다. 이는 사용자의 정적인 프로파일 및 간단한 조작 정보 등을 이용하여 사용자의 명시적인 컨텍스트를 인지한다. 그리고 인지된 컨텍스트에 따라 vrFlora 의 자체적인 동기, 즉 감정과 욕구을 자율적으로 변화시키며 이에 따라 자발적인 반응을 표현한다. 더 나아가 사용자에 따라 동기의 변화 정도를 차별화 함으로써, 사용자에 따른 개인화된 반응을 나타낸다. 제안한 시스템의 유용성을 평가하기 위하여 스마트홈 환경을 위한 테스트 베드인 ubiHome 에 vrFlora 를 구현하였다. 그리고 사용자로 하여금 이를 자연스럽게 경험해 볼 수 있도록 하였다. 이를 통해 미래형 홈 환경에서의 지능형 미디어 콘텐츠에 대한 응용 가능성을 제시한다.
