  • Two experiments were conducted to explore the effects of anaphora and demonstrative ellipsis on reference resolution. This study assumed that two type of ellipsis could be sensitive to antecedents' saliency: the reverse typicality and mention order of antecedents. The muti-task approach measured the antecedent's activation level and processing load for the conflict resolution of theories of anaphoric resolution. In Experiment 1, using ellipsis for anaphora, participants read a series of sentence pairs by self-paced and performed a probe recognition test. The results showed the main effects of antecedent's typicality and mention order in both tasks. In Experiment 2, using noun phrase without demonstrative for anaphora, participants read a series of sentence pairs by self-paced and performed a probe recognition test. The results showed main effects of mention order of antecedents for probe recognition task only. The first antecedent was recognized faster than the second one. The results of two experiments suggested that anaphora type and antecedent's saliency were dynamically interact in reference resolution for Korean.

  • This study aims to establish the standards to give the design weight in case when developing equipment designs, by classifying products with similar purposes in accordance with the morphological characteristics and also extracting the typicality. Limiting the sampling group for the extraction of the typicality to a pendant-type and a ceiling buried-type through the preceding case study and consultation with experts, the survey was conducted for majors and relevant workers in six cities, sampling products released in Korea and Japan before May 2016. The 1st survey was about the Morphological classification, and the 2nd times about the extraction of the typicality while the 3rd one was about the classification of the morphological attributes. By drawing the design attributes based on the functional/morphological classification and formative principles, it aimed to establish the base of the future research on the measurement of design weight. The results of this study aim to efficiently establish the roles of design technology in accordance with changes in the lighting fixture market caused by the substitution of light sources, and also to draw the development direction to rapidly cope with the accelerated changes in lighting design types and corporate R&D.

  • Confirmation bias is well known to be the cause of widespread misjudgment in the field of forensic decision-making. In this study, we examined the psychological mechanisms by which confirmation bias affects intentionality judgment in serious injury and death cases that combine the moral characteristics of the perpetrator and victim differently. As a result, participants perceived the case as a more typical criminal case when both the perpetrator and victim were bad people, and gave higher intention to perpetrators' actions in these typical crimes. In particular, it was found that people with a high degree of confirmation bias highly judge the intention of the offenders in a consistent way with the stereotype of criminal cases. However, in serious criminal cases, the moderate effect of confirmation bias has disappeared and only the effect of crime typicality has existed. Finally, we discussed implications of this study and ways to reduce bias in intentionality judgment.

  • This study first examined the social meanings of typicality found in the prison, (solitary) confinement, and conduit(passage) in Peter Halley's works, in which both the prison and (solitary) confinement represent a suppressed structural framework. The former has freedom and escape excluded from it, and the latter allows for mutual regulation and connection as a space of positive mediation. Conduits are interpreted to be flexible and have the potential of creating something new through connection and communication with the outside world. The study then compared and analyzed the meanings of typicality in Halley's works and the concept of segments proposed by Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari as social justice in that both of them were in the same context. The findings lead to a conclusion that Halley's prison, (solitary) confinement, and conduit(passage) can be connected to a solid, flexible, and escape segment, respectively, by Deleuze and Guattari.

  • Early research into category-based feature inference reported various phenomena in human thinking including typicality, diversity, similarity effects, etc. Later research discovered that participants' prior knowledge has an extensive influence on these sorts of reasoning. The current research tested the effects of causal knowledge on feature inference and conducted modeling on the results. Participants performed feature inference for categories consisted of four features where the features were connected either in common cause or common effect structure. The results showed typicality effects along with violations of causal Markov condition in common cause structure and causal discounting in common effect structure. To model the results, it was assumed that participants perform feature inference based on the difference between the probabilities of an exemplar with the target feature and an exemplar without the target feature (that is, $p(E_{F(X)}{\mid}Cat)-p(E_{F({\sim}X)}{\mid}Cat)$). Exemplar probabilities were computed based on causal model theory (Rehder, 2003) and applied to inference for target features. The results showed that the model predicts not only typicality effects but also violations of causal Markov condition and causal discounting observed in participants' data.

  • This study was conducted in order to provide as a basic materials of sea cliff vegetation structure through distribution related with the landform and growth pattern of mixed growth plants by ordination method in the Peucedanum japonicum community of Korea. The mixed growth plants of frequency over 10% growth with Peucedanum japonicum community of sea cliff was investigated as a total 26 species, and the frequency of appearing plants was the highest in the Aster spathulifolius(55.7%). Growing pattern of mixed growth plants was a difference by the landform factors as such the inland side, coastline side, flat and slope. Growing pattern was classified into typicality type, one-sided type and complex type. Growing pattern of the typicality type was good distribution in total landform factors, the one-sided type was good distribution in 1 landform factor and the complex type was good distribution in 2 landform factors. In growing pattern of mixed growth plants with Peucedanum japonicum, Artemisia capillaris and Sedum oryzifolium was typicality type, Elymus dahuricus and Artemisia princeps was one-sided type, and Aster spathulifolius, Miscanthus sinensis, Calystegia soldanella and Lysimachia mauritiana was complex type. In total plants of mixed growth, growing pattern of 16 species of 61.5% was good as complex type.

  • The perceptron algorithm, which is one of a class of gradient descent techniques, has been widely used in pattern recognition to determine linear decision boundaries. However, it may not give desirable results when pattern sets are nonlinerly separable. A fuzzy version was developed to male up for the weaknesses in the crisp perceptron algorithm. This was achieved by assigning memberships to the pattern sets. However, still another drawback exists in that the pattern memberships do not consider class typicality of the patterns. Therefore, we propose a possibilistic approach to the crisp perceptron algorithm. This algorithm combines the linearly separable property of the crisp version and the convergence property of the fuzzy version. Several examples are given to show the validity of the method.

  • Ecotourism has a concept of conservation as a basis, for economic and social values are derived from the sustainable use of natural resources. This study aims to introduce natural landscape of the Cairngorms National Park in Scotland and to describe its conservation and tourism in the Park, in order to provide the implication of landscape conservation of National Parks in Korea. Although the National Parks of Scotland were officially established long after those of England and Wales, their important features had already been internationally recognised and designated as Sites of Special Scientific Interest(SSSI), National Nature Reserve(NNR), or National Scenic Area(NSA). These focus on landscape conservation and are managed by Scottish Natural Heritage(SNH). The Cairngorms National Park focuses on landscape conservation and recreation, and has been the subject of a number of initiatives attempting to assess landscape resource potential and its current and future management. This implies that a carefully preserved landscape has the effect of a tourism resource in which tourists look for novelty embedded in the typicality of the landscape of the National Park. The typical landscape which is conserved in the Cairngorms National Park is understood as both an objective representative and a subjective ideal involving the meaning of the landscape. This is implicit in the tourist booklet that promotes the sightseeing activities of tourists. It is thus important that National Parks should be focused both on managing landscape as well as promoting tourism.

  • This study examined the texts of the Late Joseon Dynasty's YEONJEONG GASA, whose authors are unknown, to list the contents of education which can be provided by conventional elements. Most existing discussions on expression education have focused on creativity. However, the perspective creativity based on the concepts of modern individualism and difference believes that creation can be done only by special professionals with inborn abilities and is likely to jeopardize the possibility and need of expression education to reduce the scope of expression education. On the other hand, conventionality has been related to "cliche" and "old-fashioned" and considered the counterpoint of creativity with lacking originality and aesthetical or educational valuelessness. Nevertheless, conventionality is valuable as cultural custom in that it is closely related to the contemporary culture, thoughts, and language. Also, it is the power that creates new text and induces sympathy in receivers. The Late Joseon Dynasty's YEONJEONG GASA by unknown authors include typicality of circumstances, schematism of emotion, and formula in conventionality. The positive aspects of conventionality - familiarity and intimacy - are the basis of sympathy and become the power that encourages the public to participate in creation and enjoyment within the frame of creativity. Ultimately, conventionality of YEONJEONG GASA allows learners to experience the pleasure of expression and has an important meaning for expression education as it provides them with the opportunity to perform expressions to extend sympathy.

  • Cluster analysis or clustering is a kind of unsupervised learning method in which a set of data points is divided into a given number of homogeneous groups. Fuzzy clustering method, one of the most popular clustering method, allows a point to belong to all the clusters with different degrees, so produces more intuitive and natural clusters than hard clustering method does. Even more some of fuzzy clustering variants have noise-immunity. In this paper, we improved the Possibilistic Fuzzy C-Means (PFCM), which generates a membership matrix as well as a typicality matrix, using Gath-Geva (GG) method. The proposed method has a focus on the boundaries of clusters, which is different from most of the other methods having a focus on the centers of clusters. The generated membership values are suitable for the classification-type applications. As the typicality values generated from the algorithm have a similar distribution with the values of density function of Gaussian distribution, it is useful for Gaussian-type density estimation. Even more GG method can handle the clusters having different numbers of data points, which the other well-known method by Gustafson and Kessel can not. All of these points are obvious in the experimental results.
