  • Korea has been in a truce state for about 70 years, not an end-of-war country. Even in a situation with this specificity, Korea's veterans' system is insufficient compared to other countries. In addition, Korea's veteran policy lacks an "honor of veterans" system compared to veterans' advanced countries (the United States, Canada, Australia, France, and Germany), and a representative example of it is the "support system for veterans and discharged soldiers." After analyzing the major veterans' policy systems in the veterans' developed countries (US, Canada, Australia, France, and Germany), this study suggests that we should expand the major anniversaries related to veterans and suggest a policy alternative as it is necessary to introduce public awareness education on the promotion of veterans. In the end, it is necessary to properly recognize the pain and agony of division to the generations before and after, laying the foundation for the advanced country-type veteran affair system.

  • The Joint Coastal Guard System is composed of a maritime surveillance system and a anti-coastal infiltration system, and is a system in which the Navy is mainly responsible for the maritime and the Army is responsible for the coast. We analyzed the operations effectiveness of the joint coastal guard system, in which various weapon systems of the army and navy are operated in a complex way, to the extent to which successful operation is possible against small targets. The operations effectiveness analysis was conducted by defining the operations effectiveness by operation type, configuring the simulation environment using METT-T elements, establishing the assumptions of the simulation scenario, conducting the simulation and analyzing the simulation results by weather condition. The simulation tools used were NORAM and EADSIM. As a result of the operations effectiveness analysis, the joint coastal guard system currently in operation showed a significant difference in operational success depending on the size of the target and weather conditions. This research can be used as useful data for establishing an effective joint coastal guard system and conducting systematic guard operations.

  • The button is a part of costume. But it has the symbolism of costume in itself and reflects the sociocultural phenomena. The purpose of this study is to clarify symbolism of button of eighteenth and nineteenth century which had been most popular. This study is based on the library research. Through this paper, I reached conclusions as follows. The symbolism of button is found in various ways. First, Aesthetics is found in material, color, design and type etc. of button. Especially Indian silver button of abstract type shows well distinctive aesthetics of Indians. Second, The material and the number of button vary with one's status and show off one's privilege. I England, there was the rule, in which the symbol of the King was a silver button with a figure of lion. The livery button represents his family to the nble and shows the meaning of obedience to the servant. Third, The button on uniform varies with ranks. This is prominent in a uniform of a soldier or a policeman. Fourth Material and craft of button show one's economic position. The button gives a Very good picture of what one's life was then. Precious button with gold, silver, and other jewels is an index to one's property. Fifth, The button of political event is used for election, which shows the face and the name of runner. Besides that, there were buttons designed for the flag or the slogan for political event. Sixth, The button of social event reflects a social phase of life in war or revolution, for example, it satirizes the burning of the Bastille in the French Revolution, or the taxpayer bearing the burden. Seventh, the buttons that symbolize a historic event are made to commemorante an epochal and critical occurrence or an important person's birth, death, visit to some place, etc., Eighth, there were well-known persons, for example, a president, a king, a queen, a singer, or an artist in the buton of personality. Nineth, The button of one's company shows one's community in figures or pictures, that is, this button is used as a symbol one's community. Tenth, The button varies with the development of science and technology. It gives a very good picture of what it was and what the technological level was. Eleventh, The buttons that symmbolize on occupation most impressively are uniform buttons. Symbolic marks related with a particular occupation are carved on the buttons of compary employees' uniforms. Twelfth, Various natural phenomena are designed to appear on buttons, Some express themselves simply as they are, and others appear as a symbolic form such as environmental relationship between men and nature, four seasons, a constellation and all other natural things occurring during a year. Finally, The button of rebus is a motto expressed by a combination with objects figures, letters, words, or phrases.

  • The May 18 Democratic Movement has been considered to be specific case of the big deviation in social memory among the events that occurred after the Korea War. Compared with other events associated with the democratization movement, the May 18 Democratic Movement is special in that can be achieved various changed meaning. In this study, primary focus will be on the background and logics to show what changed the meaning of the May 18 Democratic Movement from the perspectives of the memorial project. And to investigate influences of change of meaning on perspectives and forms of memorial projects. Recognition and forms of memorial projects on the May 18 Democratic Movement had been largely changed around 2000s. Memorial projects were the aspects that are the logics of the social movements absorbed into the logics of the institutionalization before 2000s. During this period, it was done primarily the discourse of a holy ground for democracy and sanctuarization, had characterized the nature of the struggle of memory. After 2000s, the May 18 Democratic Movement has been interpreted historical resources to create a cultural city and a human rights city. Sometimes the May 18 Democratic Movement was appropriated by local development discourse, and sometimes was adopted as the material of differentiation strategy in the city. Form of memorial projects has also been changed type of struggle of memory to type of heritage industry.

  • This paper is written to analyze possible problems encountered with the existing data for the monitoring of land use and land cover change over the Korean peninsula and, further, to provide technical alternatives for the future land monitoring over the area. The oldest type of non-spatial data related to the land use change are cadastral statistics obtained since 1911. Annual statistics of cadastral data in early years (before 1942) can be used to assess land use change over the area. However, the cadastral statistics after the Korean War are not very appropriate for land use monitoring since the land class in cadastral data does not always correspond with actual land cover status. Majority of spatial data available for land monitoring over the area are land cover maps classified from satellite imagery since early 1970's. To analyze the suitability of land cover maps that were produced by two separate institutes with about 10 years interval, we conducted simple change detection analysis using these maps. These maps were not quite ready to be compared each other, in which they did not have the same class definition, classification method, and geometric registration. To achieve continuous and effective monitoring of land use and land cover change, particularly over North Korea, we should have a standard scheme in type and season of satellite imagery, image classification procedure, and class definition, which also should correspond to international standards.

  • Satae cheon, a tributary of the Suip cheon in Yanggu, Gangwon province, is an international river extended to North Korea. Most of drainage basin area of the river was the fierce battle field during the Korean War(1950-1953) and hard to access as it located between the MDL(Military Demarcation Line) and the CCZ(Civilian Control Zone: about 10km south from MDL). By the restriction of access to the sites, most of natural landscape have been well conserved except limited use for military activities. Even the landfoms in that area were not studied, except the government's heritage reports. Satae Cheon's channel follows the Imdang fault line(N-S) to Satae-ri and flow to west to the Dutayeon area. The river meanders along geological structure or weak line at the Dutayeon area. The meandering channel was shorten by the meander cut which linked the thalweg line of meander loop ant the meander neck. As a result of this cut, the river cliff formed by the Satae cheon became the part of newly formed channel bed and the S-forms are formed. After the channel route stabilized, channel incised the rock with large potholes and undulating walls were formed. The channel width changes from 1m to 10m with restriction of the undulating walls, so this part can be regarded as inner channel or inner gorge. From the point of planar forms it also can be slot-type canyon.

  • This experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of climatic factors varied due to the type of plastic house, cultural season and location in the house on the growth of cucumber plants grown by nutrient solution. There were two growing periods, summer culture and retarding culture, two types of plastic houses, 1-2W type house and post-less house. Air temperature, relative humidity and amount of solar radiation in the plastic houses were measured. Also, dry weight of leaves and stems, plant height, number of leaves per plant, leaf area per plant and fresh weight of fruits per plant were observed. Plant growth analysis were conducted and interrelationships between climatic factors and physiological characteristics were investigated. The results were as follows. There were no differences between the type of plastic houses in the average air temperature and average relative humidity in the plastic house, but amount of solar radiation in 1-2W type house was significantly higher than that of postless house. Daily cumulative solar radiation were highest in southwest side of 1-2W type house and northwest side of postless house. Plant height and number of leaves per plant were higher in summer culture than retarding culture, while leaf area per plant was higher in retarding culture than summer culture. Relative growth rate (RGR) showed highly significantly positive correlations with net assimilation rate (WAR) and leaf area ratio (LAR). Contribution of NAR to RGR was much higher than that of LAR. Crop growth rate (CGR) showed highly significantly positive correlations with leaf area index (LAI). It appeared that increase of LAI was important to increase productivity of cucumber. Average daily air temperature for the whole growing period showed highly significantly positive correlations with RGR and NAR. Furthermore, cumulative solar radiation for the whole growing period in retarded culture showed significantly positive correlation with RGR and NAR.

  • The stone artifacts in Bronze age from the Hyocheon sites in the Gwangju, Korea were studied on the basis of material characteristics and provenance presumptions. The use and rock names of the artifacts are a stone shovel by andesite, the stone grinding pestle by pyrophyllite, the stone sickle by schist and four stone semifinished artifacts by slates. Andesitic stone shovel could be observed easily around the Hyocheon relic site. But, rocks of the stone grinding pestle, the stone sickle, the stone arrowhead and the stone semifinished artifacts could be confirmed typical occurrences of the all kinds of rocks around the Hwasun coal mine area above 10km from the site. These are made the coupled samples with each stone artifact to the same kinds of raw material rocks based on analysis of the lithology and geochemistry. As a result a geochemical evolution trends of both a stone artifact and the rock showed very similar patterns based on normalization using the behavior, enrichment, compatibility and incompatibility of the elements. Therefore, the source rock of the stone shovel was convey from Mudeung mountain possible interpreted that the domestic-type artifacts are distributed in the vicinity of the Hyocheon site. On the other hand, the stone grinding pestle, the stone sickle, the stone arrowhead and the stone semifinished artifacts were convey from the Hwasun coal mine area possible foreign-type stone artifacts interpreted that the source rocks. Consequently, in the foreign-type stone artifacts are should archaeologic research which it can examine various possibilities clearly that the possibility to coming the introduction with the mankind migration, diffusion to dealings of tribe, the captured enemy equipment through the war and the trade with the behavior of the materials.

  • This study analyzes type variations of the 'stepmother' and 'sister' in the full-length novels of Park Kyong-Ni and attempted to point out their meanings. The pattern of "negative stepmother" that appeared in classical and new novels also appeared repeatedly in Park Kyong-Ni's full-length novels and this was because a change took place in later full-length novels. Novels analyzed with focus were Jaegwiyeol(1959), Eunha(1960), Kimyakgukeue Ddaldeul(1962), and Nabiwa Unggungkwi(1969). The stepmother that appears in Eunha is a type that appears often in the classic and new novels of Korea. While the stepmother newly gained the role and status of 'mother', she forms a competitive relationship with the daughter of the former wife while still refusing to be a member of the family and she puts the former wife's daughter in critical situations by committing misdeeds. However, the young stepmother in Nabiwa Unggungkwi actually becomes a victim to the malicious and morbid harassment of the former wife's daughter. This stepmother is a good-natured figure who shows a sense of guilt for failing to fulfill her responsibilities of upbringing and education and she eventually dies as a victim to a bomb during the war, leaving her young biological daughter behind. On one hand, the sisters in Jaegwiyeol and Kimyakgukeue Ddaldeul are not strongly bonded but when one is caught in a crisis, the other one claims to be of help. Unlike this, the sisters in Nabiwa Unggungkwi have a bond that cannot be broken. They are half-sisters that bind each other so severely that they hinder each other's growth and they eventually end up disintegrating. Through such analyses, it is shown that issues of human nature are dealt with more acutely by breaking the 'young stepmother' away from convention by placing her in the position of the victim to amplify the conflicting relationship between sisters, unlike in previous pieces. This study was significant in that it looked into how previously repetitive character type changes appeared in full-length novels in conditions that clearly display the writer's determination to leave behind a masterpiece.
